View Full Version : You Guys with the V1's - Concealed Display Ideas?

SO - I just ordered my V1 on friday (obviously stoked about it). I have absolutely awful luck, and to add to that I'm a young kid driving a red BMW. Bad Combo - I'm pretty much a magnet for police officers. So in goes the V1 the second it arrives. It will be mounted above my mirror and hardwired into the dome light.

I also ordered the concealed display, and although I have a couple ideas for places to mount it, I'd like to hear any alternatives from those of you that have a concealed display. Any ideas?

Well for me I have it next to my mirror. However, I will be probably putting it in the rear behind the middle headrest. That way if I go through VA it would still be okay and the cops won't see it. Congrats on the purchase. If you need some help hard wiring it or whatever feel free to give me a ring. Also I am a magnet as well :P

Plan is I am going to design my own custom one for the V1 to be place either in the mirror itself or in the rear. This will allow a lot more flexibility as for where I can mount it. If you are interested as well we can brain storm on the perfect location. Also keep in mind that it isn't illegal to have one in MA :P

Time to get concealed display :)

I have the StealthOne which displays the alerts on your Nav system, but a concealed display or V1 connect (display on you phone) probably does the same thing.

The bottom shoots missiles out the ass of the car right Stu? Oil slick perhaps? Seriously awesome installs my friend.

Stu where is the actual unit though? I'm curious about where everyone place their radar units.

regretfully up high (still in window)

I had mounted it in the motion sensor housing - the radar worked ok, the laser not at all

I have seen a few installs mounted on the rear speaker shelf in sedan/vert/coupe

Dane, the button is for turning off power to the main unit. When you close the ashtray lid it automatically turns off the power.

That way you aren't reaching up to turn off the unit (for the officer/trooper to see)

Perfection on the sly. Are those illegal in DC?

yes, and VA (obviously)

CT used to be illegal too - but I think it was repealed

I designed the button position specifically so it would shut down the power - I have made about 200 of these over the years...only complaints was the down low location

Nothing beats what Obioban did. Right in the gauge cluster next to the mileage readout.

The only problem I see about Obioban's setup is laser. I believe that would be the disadvantage. I'm not totally positive though.

remember, in all the setups discussed here, it is the remote display (no one has presented a pic of the main unit)

Regretfully the main unit (on any detector) has to have line of sight (preferably as high as possible and center as possible

stu - top class setup. I was thinking that location - or I could even use the lighter adapter since the jack is right there. Great idea with the switch too. As you mentioned though, I think it would be nice to have it a tiny bit higher up so I don't have to look down at my ashtray to see the bogey counter and such.

the funny thing - I have become so used to the detector - that I base my decisions usually on audible and not so much looking at the display (down in car and up near mirror on truck or TL)

I have been running a V-1 for many years - had it hard wired in my E36 M3. Now I just clip it on my passenger side visor, dangle the cord down to the cig lighter socket and - happy motoring! I am most definitely going low tech. My experience is that you have to locate the V-1 as high as possible in your windshield, advance warning will be sufficient - concealed display is cool (I have done that), but I believe that you have to maintain "heads up" and not take eyes off road to look at display.

V-1 only does so much, so keep a gimlet eye on the mirror, watch on ramps, keep sharp lookout for CHP bikes (clue: they don't run with day time headlights) and keep current on where cops lurk. I have AT, so left foot braking allows me an extra half second to slow down when the V-1 squawks. I have been fortunate with laser, too. Finally, I still run my old Beartracker, which picks up most CHP, as California has not completed trunking the radio system.

MisterMotorist - the only problem with simply clipping it to visor and the coiled cord - law enforcement in VA and DC (a few of us live in the Washington, DC region) will ticket us (and potentially confiscate) for using/having a detector.

Detectors are legal in CA, so I have mine up in the windshield just to the right of the rear view mirror. It's hardwired so no dangling cords, etc. With the StealthOne, I don't have to see the display so that's why it's on the other side of the mirror. Line of sight is very important with the V1. Some people say they mount them near the head rest, etc, but that could be an issue due to line of sight.

I was seriously considering Obioban's gauge cluster idea, but I now see a problem with it. I plan on mounting my V1 to the right of my rearview mirror and one of the things about the concealed display is that it has a mute button that is easily reached if you want to shut it up. If I put the concealed display in my gauge cluster, I can't use the mute button on the concealed display and I'd have to reach around my rearview mirror to mute it.

Other than this small problem, I believe that it's the perfect place for it.

those that have braved plcing the remote in the cluster have placed a mute button on center console, etc

Nic and I just installed his unit. We decided to stick the remote display to the trim piece just to the right of the LCM so he could both see it and have easy access to the mute button. Fairly easy install... only real issues were taking apart the damn car :D Everything else was straight forward.

^Except for the fact that, after having tested it, I bundled up all the wire and put the dome light back and it wouldn't work. Keep in mind this is at 12:30 at night. After an hour of trying to pinpoint which part went wrong, I found that the wiring harness would cease to work if nudged or bumped. So I took the wiring harness off and replaced it and it finally worked.

- Only to discover today, driving with V1 for the first time, that I really can't see the display too well while traveling straight. I have to look down and through the steering wheel to see it. So, I'm probably gonna move it to the dash. Great.

So after a lot of research and thought I intend to get a concealed display and mount it right into my rear view mirror. With that I am intending to retrofit the concealed display as shown here (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/453525-V1-(rearview-mirror)-concealed-install-part-1-remote-display). It will be going to the left side of the mirror. The V1 will be mounted in the rear of the car somewhere. I am thinking that behind the rear middle headrest. I will be trying to route a power wire to the V1 itself to easily turn it on and off if I don't need it.

Photos I found.

I don't mind my V1 right next to my mirror. I think it looks kinda cool, and only I (or any passengers) can see it sitting there all dark. And I am now seriously considering the Obioban dash install. Touching the mute button on the V1 is super easy (just right next to my mirror) so that's not a problem, and if it turns out to be then I can just get an audio adapter thingy.

I found a decent DIY: http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=300508
