What is the general consensus on gear oil for the 6 speed? Reading I see folks using BMW OE, Redline D4..then MTL, MTF (some combining the two) and occasional RP'. After all these years what is the latest'?

Also any input on dif' fluid would be appreciated. I know opinions change over time AND every brand of car reacts differently to dif' brands/weights

I stuck with the Mike Miller recommendation of Red Line MTL. A lot of members use D4.

I used RP in the past and had no complaints.

I also opted for Red Line for the diff. I had RP in there and my Blackstone report showed lots of metal. Couldn't necessarily attribute it to the RP but I feel better with Red Line in there.

Looks like it's Pentosin MTF 2 for me. I just finished reading a thread over on 'BOB is the Oil Guy' about BMW 6 speed gear oil. The Pentosin is the equivalent of OE fluid

Pentosin is what I run. I have a yellow sticker on my tranny and this is what it said to use. No complaints here.

Heh, you'll get a million opinions, best thing is to choose something you feel comfortable with (and that is recommended). I've always run Redline in past cars, so I called up Redline and they compared the OEM oil specs to their products and said that in this transmission, to run D4 ATF and 75W90 gear oil in the differential. So, that's what I've got. Shifts are noticeably smoother (although, I don't know what was in there previously, so nothing to compare to).

Good luck.

Does anyone have any slight gear rattle at idle? I have Redline MTL in mine, and while the shifts are smooth, I can hear the gear lash at idle. Is this cause for concern? Should I look for a thicker fluid?

I have had Redline D4ATF in the 6spd right now for about 4-5k miles. Replacing what I believe was OE fluid. I was happy with it at first. Shifts have recently started getting harder but only when the car is stopped. Clutch has checked out fine. I think I'm either going to switch to Motul or Pentosin.

I haven't noticed any gear rattle. May be your throw out bearing?
