I like the chrome trim on a black car. Are you considering changing to the silver interior trim to match the shift knob?

No because I'm going to change the knob most likely to a shorter one

Yep, I agree... I think the wood goes beautifully with the interior. I'd get a different knob, perhaps the E9x M-sport perforated leather? Would look perfect on there...

The biggest difference is driving feel. The ZHP is much more connected to the road and "raw". The e92 is much nicer to drive and comfortable, but can still take hold its own in the twistys. The e92 is more of a luxury car than the zhp which I'd say is more of a drivers car. However the power in the e92 quickly makes you forget about some of that haha. I also love the folding seats since my ZHP didn't have them. Overall I'm loving the e92 and think it'll be a very fun car to own!

Change out the lever to a BMW Performance one. It costed me like $60 on the E82 (but they have one for the E9x of course) and it is soooo much nicer. The E9x lever is like a train handbrake...soooo long

Thanks guys! I'm really enjoying it. Hoping to do intercooler and dp's soon.

If you do DPs make sure you have a tune to match.

Trust me you don't. It's a 1/2 ass job. Software sucks. Have had multiple people come to us asking for a fix.

Vargas twin upgraded turbos seem to be the best route when combined with e85 mix.

Personally I would do dps and a tune first then build the car up from there. You're gonna get the most bang for your buck with those two items 100 whp easily.

curious what made you want to make the jump from ZHP to E90 at this age, at this point in your life? no judgment, just honestly curious.

Well to be honest it started because I wanted something new and I spent a few months trying to think of another car that id actually WANT to drive. I looked and test drove dozens of cars. GTIs, wrx's, a4s, a3s, 1ers, newer 3 series, c class cars, genesis, g35 and g37s, etc. After a while I realized I really just want another BMW. I settled one either a 135 or 335 and my search started. I found this e92 in Raleigh and it was immaculate! Seriously, interior looks brand new and not a SINGLE ding or dent on the outside. It's perfect. So after not having much luck finding a e82 on this side of the country, I decided to start getting serious about this car. I ended up talking the guy down quite a bit into the price range of a car I could afford and getting a hell of a deal on it!

So yeah that's pretty much the story haha. I know as a kid, many think id want something more raw like the ZHP and I did love that car! I'm going to miss it a lot. However, I also wanted a newer, lower mileage car that had more power potential and the n54 fit the bill. Yeah the e92 is softer but it's also a lot nicer inside and head over heels nicer to drive on the highway compared to the ZHP IMO. They are two separate beasts for sure.

BavarianZHP
06-10-2013, 01:31 PM
I agree with you and I'm 25. The ZHP (mine at least) has a harsh ride, as a driver I don't mind it at all, but my passengers have complained about it. Wimps. All of them! :) I've only ridden in a e90 sedan and that ride was plush as cush.

HokieZHP
06-10-2013, 01:47 PM
I really didn't mind the ride of the ZHP so much and neither did my passengers, except my mom dad who wasn't a fan of it on trips.. But can I just say, the seats in this car are FREAKING AWESOME!!!

But I'll be 22 in the fall and I guess the real reason I got it was because I wanted it, it fit my criteria, and more I could afford it.

Every time someone ask me about the e90 the seats are one of the things I bring up. This is the only car that I love sitting in for extended periods. Doing 40k a year I can't think of a seat I rather be in.

I was worried about it as well and my car has the wastegate rattle. I talked with Performance BMW in Chapel Hill and they will be replacing them as soon as I can set up an appointment to get a loaner and get back down there from school. But I will most likely be purchasing the BMW 3yr/36,000 mile warranty sometime soon.

But the seats are definitely in contention for best seats I've ever used in a car before. Especially with the air bolsters that I can use to squeeze me in the seat. Lumbar is nice as well since my ZHP didn't have that.

derbo
06-10-2013, 04:56 PM
oddly enough, as I'm hitting 28, I still think the ZHP or the E46 M3 is car of choice. I don't care about my passengers moaning about the ride cause guess what they can drive themselves then! Or take my Prius. hahah

But congrats on the car. I would love to own a E92 for fun.

So I guess I will use this as my project thread. Just talked with Performance BMW yesterday and set up an appointment to get the turbos replaced this Saturday. Will drop the car off, get a loaner and pick it up next weekend when I get back home again.

Also ordered my first mod! Should be at my house by the time I pick my car up from getting the turbos replaced!

Well the turbos on these engines have a 8yr/82k mile warranty so they're being replaced under warranty. Most likely won't upgrade turbos while I have the car. The stock turbos can go up to around 450hp with supporting mods and I won't need more than that, if I even upgrade it that much haha

Update:

Had the turbos replaced under warranty at Performance BMW. No more wastegate rattle!

Also installed this trunk lip today. I think it really brings the rear end together with the sloping roofline.

You know it's funny. I like the zhp feel better than the e90s. I think the newer car just feels fatter. I'm only comparing 335i to zhp. M3 to M3 I would still love an e46 M3 over the e92

I think on a track or twistys the ZHP feels better. However, in any other scenario, around town, highway, etc, I think the e92 is a better driving car. Not as stiff yet can still hold it's own in the corners.

I am actually happy with the exhaust for now. I did the golf tee mod and it sounds good. Not mean sounding like my magnaflow but it's decent for now. Exhaust is low on the priority list though haha. Tune and fmic and down pipes first!

My plan is a vrsf 7" FMIC once the ZHP sells. Then down pipes, thinking cat less since I don't want to spend $7-800 on catted ones. Then just swap them for inspections.

Unsure about tune as of now. Thinking Cobb but could still be swayed. Jb4 maybe. Just not sure about the advantages of Cobb or eurocharged flash vs jb4 or proceed piggyback. Decisions decisions...cough cough Seth....

Very cool! It's probably beastly. What's involved with Cobb - just plug it in and let it tune, right?

HokieZHP
07-26-2013, 06:19 AM
Yup you plug it in and the first time you do it it saves the stock ecu settings for that car. Then it loads up the tune you want. Took 25 mins to do both the first time. Then switched maps again this morning and it only took 6 mins.

And yeah...it's much faster now! Like I said I want down pipes but am on the edge about it with the whole catless thing...

I'm running the Cobb stage 2 aggressive right now, I have a custom tune on the way as well. I really like the Cobb over the JB4, but JB4 wasn't that bad either. Cobb tune is faster/smoother, and allows more boost. I have all bolt on's so I wouldn't recommend running the stage 2 til you open up the exhaust all of the way (at least thats what I was told by VAC and Pro-Tuning Freaks). You will want more than just the downpipes before switching tunes.

I have AR designs catless downpipes, Agency Power mid-pipe and corsa exhaust, Evolution Racewerks FMIC

Thanks for the info. Apparently only the 1ers need different exhausts to run those tunes. But I plan on keeping stage 1 aggressive until I get intercooler and dp's then it'll most likely be stage 2 aggressive. Leaning towards vrsf for both fmic and dp's.

So for reasons I cannot figure out for the life of me, my rear tires are on the wear bars...luckily for me my friend in town called his buddy who owns a car garage around here and got some good news. He had a set of 255/35/18 Michelin pilot sport a/s tires that I could have for FREE!! Since I'm running the pilot sport a/s tires already, it was perfect!

They are 3k miles old and I just had them installed for free as well. Gotta love connections! Haha

Great news but also bad news since this means new wheels are on hold until these tires bite the dust since I'll be going 19s with the new wheels.

Those wheels are absolutely gorgeous. Just be careful though. Wheels that style tend to have less overall strength due to the design. Especially in 19's. Just be careful is all. I'd hate to get s brand new set of rims and crack or bend one in a month.

So I ordered the new Vishnu Open Flash Tablet for my car and love it! Compared to the Cobb, the simplest comparison is that the Cobb seems to pull slightly harder if at all but the OFT is so much smoother! Maybe the smoothness makes it feel less aggressive but overall I am very happy with it. Haven't really had the chance to play around with all of it's features but just wanted to share my initial thoughts for anyone who's interested.

Ok so update time. I bought the newly released VRSF exhaust at a great intro price! I installed it Thursday and have been driving with it for about 100 miles now. The sound is amazing! Deep aggressive tone down low and amazing on the high end! The biggest issue is that it is a 3.5" SINGLE pipe all the way back to a dual muffler. Because of this, you have to adjust it quite a bit to find the sweet spot so the center skid plate/brace fits with minimal spacing. I am still working with the VRSF rep on how to get it installed and perfectly adjusted and I think I am almost there. VRSF has been more than helpful. Helping me and returning my PM's within a few hours.

There is NO drone anywhere in the RPM's and isn't obnoxiously loud which I like on the highway. Once I get it installed and adjusted perfectly and get the brace in, I'll post pics and videos once it's fully broken in. Here are some pics from some other reviews though! These pics are from a member on E90post.

I don't think it would restrict. The factory pipes aren't that big, but this one flows into a rather massive single pipe.

Flow from 2 - 2.5" pipes now merging into 1 - 3.5" pipe, I could've wrong but logic would say less volume to hold air.

Newest addition. cp-e DCI. I got this one because it was one of the only DRY intakes I could find and I didn't want oiled filters. They make the turbos much more audible which is kinda cool and I can definitely tell there's a performance bump from the butt dyno. Really happy with them! Also they're made in the good 'ole USA!

Nope, no box. That's all. It does suck in some hot air but it's going into winter so I'm not worried. A FMIC will be coming in the spring so once it gets warm out again, the FMIC will take care of any heatsoak issues.

Yeah they really do! If I actually did tracking where I was using that much braking force I would have just gone with slotted. I had the Bmw drilled performance rotors on my ZHP and they handled everything I threw at that car so I'm sure these can as well haha

Got the downpipes installed yesterday. What a difference! Car spools much faster and is also noticeably faster. Sounds much better as well. Sounds more tame at startup and idle now that the exhaust is smoother now from the 3" dps to the 3.5" exhaust compared the the stock 2.5" downpipes. Overall I'm very happy with them! I'll get some videos soon once the roads are dry

Boost is very addicting. Look into a proper tune afterwards as well to see more gains. Cobb makes a nice ecu flash system.

An actual custom dyno tune or just a simple reflash? If the car is running just an out of the box reflash for bolt-ons, more power can be made as well as a safer tune on the dyno.

I wasn't a fan of the Cobb tune personally. I didn't have the custom tune but still. I have a Vishnu tune now that I absolutely love and it can be custom tuned as well so when the time comes I guess.

Seth- I would do e85 but the nearest station to me is an hour away. I've read a lot about it though. It is impressive.

Out of the box Cobb tunes leave alot open on the table. But finish up the bolt-ons and hit the dyno for a custom tune.

Yeah I will eventually. Shiv's open flash tablet tune I'm running now is very impressive though. I know a dyno tune will be a lot better but for now I'm content. Dyno tuning will probably be the last step.

Kpro's Cobb tune definitely added more power than the JB4 it replaced. She has a custom tune coming from tuning freaks as soon as she gets around to sending them the data from a few 3 gear pulls but I will tell ya the her car ran in the 12s at the local drag strip in less than ideal conditions ..

Yeah the jb4 isn't too stellar in my opinion. It fluctuates to much for me. I've driven one and the power seemed inconsistent. The Cobb was better but the power curve still wasn't what I wanted and it lacked low end power. The open flash has insane low end that also pulls up to redline. I bet Kristen's protune will make a night and day difference though. I've heard the protune on the Cobb tune makes it a lot better

So many pages to go through....:drool

At a local MFEST meet not too long ago, I saw an E92 335i with JB4 running meth.
....:eyetwitch:jawdrop

EDIT: I just noticed that it's a 2007.
I'm not trying to jinx anything, but I hope it serves you well and for a long time.....
When I was still in high school in 2009-2010, I bought a 2005 325Ci. A classmate bought an E93 335i, either 2007 or 2008.
It spent more time in the shop than on the streets, and he doesn't track it or even drive it more than I do. His parents had money too, but it (the E93) just kept eating it. Eventually, he sold it.
I remembered terms like the HPFP among other parts names here and there....

So I caved and took a study break and loaded up the Vishnu Stage 2 tune on my openflash tablet. Wow, another nice bump in power! Car gets squirly when you get on it and you can really feel the rear plant and the car just shoot off! I'm going back to stage 1 or 0 though while here in Blacksburg. This tune advances the throttle some so it comes in harder earlier in the pedal stroke so you get going pretty quick without realizing it and I don't need that too much with the 25mph speed limits around here! Plus with my current mods and stage 0 or 1 I still have over around 380-400hp and well over 400ft-lbs on tap. Plenty enough for me to have fun with!

UdubBadger
12-12-2013, 04:48 AM
Very nice. Yeah I've heard Vishnu has a tendency to be a bit hard on stage 2. Our stage two comes in early but has smoother delivery as we control the boost a little differently. We still make about the same power though and I can say it's LOTS of fun.

Not it's time to shed some weight and really make her fly Chris ;)

Yeah I've heard that as well. Another reason why I may go back to stg 1 because it is very smooth and provides plenty of power for me. I want to try some e85 when I go back home and try the Vishnu e-40 map they recently released.

Seats are always the fist thing that come to mind. Bonnet and bootlid will get you a little. Wheels for sure (less rotational weight means more power to the ground too)

Turn's out I'm going to try and do some e85 while at home for break since there's a station in Durham. Planning to use Shiv's e40 OFT map and see how it goes. I was told to just let it adapt for a few miles then log and see how the fuel trims are doing.

Any other suggestions? Or just fuel her up and hit the road

UdubBadger
12-16-2013, 05:00 AM
If you're running a 40% mix I would go small first. Most guys I know ran 35%. Try a 3 gal 93 + 2 gal e85 mix and don't WOT the car right away but slowly get it up to where you can drive it spiritedly by the end of the tank to see how it goes. When you kill that tank do a full tank mix and then open her up.

It's totally precautionary but I that's how I would make sure the car is adapting to it properly. Plus the small tank will be easier to burn off in case you have any issues.

Yeah I shot him a PM just now to ask. I was talking to wedge on e90post and he said it should be good. I just need to watch my mixtures.

What mix should I use with the e90? I know with e85 I should so around 40-50% from what I've read as that's what runs best on this tune. But how should that be changed for e90?

No worries, I asked Wedge and he told me. with e90, I just need to aim for about 40-45% e85 fuel. So I'll probably do like 2 gallons of e85 and 2.5-3 gallons or so of 93 octane for my test run.
