View Full Version : POLL: A little custom touch to my interior

Alright folks, as many of you know, I like little mods that set my car apart from the others, silly little mods that not many people would think of. As well, I try to mimic some of the newer BMW features to make my car feel a little more updated. Well, here goes another one. The newer BMWs that come with the "upgraded" sound system all have a brushed aluminum detail ring on the speaker grills. Well, I have a spare set of HK speakers with black grills, so I thought it'd be a neat look to try and recreate this, seeing as how the ZHP has the upgraded HK system. :) Also, I thought the black grills would look cool against the natural brown panels in my doors. So, I used the black grills and custom painted the brushed aluminum ring around the outside edge.

Here's what I was trying to mimic:

And here's a couple shots of my panels, before and after. Please comment as you see fit and vote! Thanks!! :thumbsup

I don't see a poll?

Anyway, I think it looks nice, but it would match much better with silver cube. Looks a tad out of place with black cube trim because the only other bright/metal things in the interior are the door handles and possibly the pedals.

Either way looks better than stock, however.

I will reply I suppose seeing as how I forgot to add in my original post... I do feel the chrome door pull is out of place, and I need to try and disassemble/remove them so that I can refinish them in brushed aluminum look too. So yes, I know the chrome/brushed aluminum might make it look weird, but, I've already thought of that, and this is a work in progress. :)

Poll is at the top... I see it. :)

I agree, but I had silver cube, and it looks WAY out of place on the natural brown trim... Although, for guys with black interior and silver cube, I think this would look AWESOME...

I would just do Black/Black just to be subtle. Second choice would be with the silver surround. Either one is much better than just leaving it Nat brown!

Two tone contrast interiors were always to my liking. I love how this guy did his (black speakers, black pockets, etc...) to contrast the white:

Good job on the silver surround though! Gives it some pop.

Man, all that work and he put those lousy grey floormats in there... Looks nice, but a little too much white for me. I like how my car is, just the seats and door panels center section in brown.

I like it better with the black grills with whichever set of rings you use, but the silver rings do kind of stand out. I'd put the tan rings on or spray bomb a set of rings black with your interior.

Unfortunately, the rings are part of the grills. So, I can't remove them separately. So for me, its black with silver or back to natural brown. :biggrin

I like the black with black rings. With black or silver rings, the black speakers look waaaaaaaaaay better than the NB speaker cover. Good idea joop!

Voted. I love what you did with the black speaker and the silver ring around it. It would be perfect to my eye with Silver Cubes, too, but I still love it as it is.

Thanks Marc. I agree, for people with silver cubes, its almost a MUST do, but the silver cube is still too much disco ball effect in the natural brown interior. Being that it is the coveted natural brown, I don't want your eyes to be drawn away from that and to the silver cube trim. So, I prefer the black cube in this case.

It must be because I just woke up, I'm reading through this, there are so many combinations I'm confused. So, I'll just say I like what you're doing there. Maybe I'll reread it later, lol.

Black with the silver rings looks sharp.

De-shine-ifying the door pulls would be baller. In for the DIY

Agree that I think black would be more better, but silver is better than NB.

I appreciate all the votes and input guys. I took the panels off today to install the passenger side black/silver outline grills. So, now I have all of them (better pics coming to my project thread. In addition, I investigated getting the interior pull off so that it can be refinished in the same brushed aluminum look.

The long and short of it, I think it'll be easier to mask and just paint them in place. The interior door panel parts are all plastic welded together, so its really hard to reattach these parts once you separate them... We'll see.

Sweet Cody, go for it! For reference, I purchased the ink in the form of a Primsacolor artist's paint pen from Michael's (the craft store).

They have gold too, just in case you wanna go super baller. :biggrin

Do you have close up picture of the ink?

I was thinking of using duplicolor. I did a bunch of interior on my jeep with that.

That's a pretty cool idea to use a pen. I was wondering how you masked that, etc. Do you see and stroke lines, etc?

Hey Ryan... Just now saw your reply... To answer your question, yes. And to deal with this, I took the time to very methodically make them look really cool. But, you don't see them unless you look for them... I will try and get a pic.
