More shipments arriving this week. Probably won't get to wrench on it until this weekend. Plus, I need to pick up a low-pro jack.

Finally a break from the bad weather we've been having and I was able to spend some time on the car. Changed the oil, plugs, rear diff. fluid, and fuel filter. All the fluids looked to be in good shape but were changed for peace of mind. I wanted to do the trans fluid but didn't have the right size hex so that will have to wait, as well as the brake fluid flush/bleed & CDV delete. I wish I could've gotten to it today but the weather decided to cut me short.

http://s23.postimg.org/tchzclxt7/6_30_13.jpg

Also put in the license plate delete strip from Bavarian Auto, which makes the car look so much cleaner. New headlight lens' and black grilles (still undecided on these) will be here tomorrow. I had just enough time to spray some Sonax on the rear wheels while I had them off and couldn't believe how well that stuff works!

Can you share the part number for that license plate delete strip ?

Part # : LPR E46 $23.95 @ Bavarian auto. If you go to the website, type in license plate strip and put in your car year/model and it should be the first one.

I'm game! Mine will be going back under the knife for brake & trans. fluid changes whenever the sun decides to come out our way again.

Finally had time to install some new parts this weekend. I plan on washing the car up and getting some good pics this week.

-Khoalty LED license plate bulbs

-Hotchkis Sways (Front & Rear) Bought these from Hokie, they took away a lot of the body roll. I put them on over at my dads for an extra set of hands, so no pics of the install.

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2806/9241702829_1d0898be64_b.jpg

-Gruppe M Intake. I can't compare to any other intakes, but as everyone knows, this thing roars WOT. I'm going to have to up the gas budget for the next week or so because I can't stay off the pedal!

I need me some new sway bars.

Couldn't believe the difference. The stock rear bar is like a twig compared to the Hotchkis.

Highway ramps + Sway bars+ Gruppe M.....I'm having too much fun in this car.

Lol, I forgot your car was OB! Your sig made it look black. Ride height looks fantastic! Depending on speed bumps, I might have gone another half inch down, but I could never do that where I live. :(

I can't decide on black vs chrome grills. :(

Thanks Vas. Very happy with the Potenza's so far, I was reluctant at first since the car had PS2's on them at the time.

Lol, peep the new sig! Thanks for the compliments. This as about as low I can go driving it every day. The back rubs when I drive it too hard, but I think its b/c of the 15mm spacers. And possibly because I have my jack and my ice hockey equipment in the trunk at the moment. Still, nothing a fender rolling can't fix.

Right now I have a set of matte black grills, looking to switch to gloss. Your sig tempts me to switch back to chrome, but I'll change my mind as soon as I walk up on my car again. Haha!

22 1/2" up front and just over 22 1/4" in the rear (I have my jack and ice hockey bag in the trunk, could account for a bit of sag).
10mm front/15mm rear to bring everything flush.

With a RTAB tool, its simple as pushing a pushpop popsicle out and putting one back in. Of course when rust comes into play, it may not be as simple as that. Take a look a your steering coupler too. That can help eliminate some steering slack too. I plann to do that soon.

For $40, I may just go ahead and replace it. I'd like to tighten the steering up as much as possible. Do you know the typical lifespan of one?

$payday$ Going to order a set of AKG FCABs and RTABs. Right now I'm thinking the 85A FCAB, #FCN466A and 85A RTAB, #RTAB36A. Anyone have any experience or insight on the setup? Just don't want too harsh of a ride.

I'm running M3 RTAB's (33326770817) with RMEuropean polyurethane limiters and wouldn't want any stiffer than that.

Install is a breeze with the MIS tool. Soak them in PB blaster and wait 20 mins, and they'll come right off.

Not sure how anyone would do it without the tool though.

A breeze with the stock jack and MIS tool. Haven't noticed any difference in comfort (already on coilovers) but the car is noticeably more grounded in the rear. My FCABs are worn out, but a set of AKGs are sitting in a box in my room. No garage is the only thing holding up the install. 60 degrees and sunny here today but snow tomorrow & Wednesday. Carolina winters are ridiculous.

Vas
01-27-2014, 07:26 PM
Were the stock bushings pretty much shot?

QC_ZHP
01-27-2014, 07:32 PM
I wouldn't say they were shot, I'm only at 83k and the car was babied and stock when I got it. I will say they were pretty worn and the blue AKG poly looks a lot better in there. I figured if I was going poly FCABs, may as well go poly all around. Only $90 and an hour of work. I'll be getting $70 back from AKG on the lollipop core so it was easy to justify.

At the second reunion meet I replaced my VANOS seals and installed the Beisan anti-rattle kit. After everything was put back together and I took the ZHP out for a spin, the performance improvement was immediately noticed in my case. The car pulled so much stronger and there appeared to be more low end torque after the maintenance. Luckily, the break-in period was my drive back to Rhode Island from the reunion meet...:)

Nice build, and color :)

I didn't see anywhere in your build...do you have camber plates, and what kind of alignment did you get with your PSS setup at that height?

I'm looking at picking up an 18x9" square Arc-8 wheel setup and also looking at the PSS system. Still trying to find out if I need camber plates or not, my guess is yes, but just curious what you are running 'cause I like that ride height.

QC_ZHP
02-18-2014, 09:44 PM
Thanks man, no camber plates. I haven't had the car fully aligned yet b/c I'm waiting to get my poly FCABs installed but a snow storm held me back last week. I don't think you'll need plates unless you plan on running an aggressive alignment though. I'll find out soon enough.

I'm with you on the arc-8s, I plan to get a set in the future once the car is all done.

Sitting pretty!

I appreciate it fellas.

Ugh can't wait to drop my car. Fraaack.

No issues on speed bumps, but a decent dip in the road will cause the rear to rub slightly. It needs a fender roll in back for sure, the height obviously is a big factor, but the 15mm spacers are the killer I think. Roll should take care of it, working on setting that up. Not something I'd like to do myself, I don't want to take the risk of doing any paint damage, etc.

Rides great though, coilovers+poly bushings definitely increase the feel of the road but it drives firm and takes corners on rails.

Side note: How do you guys refresh your exterior trim? Mines fading.

I think the hardest part would be swapping the dash, no? I figure I could get everything swapped in & out in 2 weekends of work. I've got a guy local with dash, carpet, console, and plastic panels. I'd just need to source some good door panels and seat backs and plastic.

Steve to remove your dash you got to remove all the vent ducts, instrument cluster, radio, environment module, glove compartment, ash tray, your center console, steering wheel and ignition/wiper/turn signal stalk, the LCM, dash trim...and such....all very easy to do.

Use your camera phone to take pics of every step of the process and use zip lock bags to store screws and such from each section and label them.

Once everything is out of the way....all you have are 4 nuts and one phillips screw to take out and the dash pulls out....simple as that. Easier if you have another person to help you swap out the dash though....ask BP...he helped me swap my dash on the ///M recently. :thumbsup

Thanks for that Charlie and great idea about taking pics. Removing is the easy part, how was installing it? I've pulled a few dashes but never in a BMW, but I'm not expecting too much of a difference. You guys may be getting a few PM's if I run into some trouble!

This is all talk right now though. I just happened to come across some parts for cheap and I'm getting a bit tired of the sand interior. One question I do have is how easily the door panels come apart? I'd like to do all black with sand/tan in the middle like pictured, but I'm not sure whats involved.

Steve,

Just remember before fully pulling out the dash, there's an electrical connector that needs to be disconnected then you can pull out the dash. Take a picture of the connector so when you're ready to install the new dash, you can make the necessary electrical connection for the replacement dash.

Another thing is that the dash has a tip at the front center part that is used as an "alignment" and inserts into a small square hole at the center point of the dash/windshield....you will see this when you slowly pull the dash back...just be sure to align the replacement dash into that hole when you reinstall the dash :thumbsup

I guess that was the hardest part in reinstalling my dash.....on a scale of 1 to 10 I with 10 being the hardest.... I would say dash replacement was a solid 1 for me. :)

As for PM's just be sure to include pictures....there's nothing more difficult than trying to help out w/o pictures. Having pictures with areas of concerned circled makes things so much easier to explain...

The door panels weren't too hard to do and I have the perfect DIY to show you how that is done....a very good friend of mine changed out his entire interior (Dove Grey to Imola Red) and dyed his interior nappa leather door panels and it turned out very well. Here's the link and page you want to go to:

Shad (Smolck) hooked me up with a dash and some other black parts.paid for it today. It ships on Monday. I'll pick up NB rear seat and door cards, and black deck from Bill at the reunion. I think it will be a summertime project while my son's car is here for a bit. I will probably have to have the front seats dyed by a local guy for about $200.

What issues do you have?

Slight front end clunk on small bumps and the car seems to float a bit at highway speeds.

New FCABs and RTABs which I thought would fix the clunk, so hopefully the end links solve that. For the floating, I'm hoping these will help but it could be uneven tire wear that I created by putting off alignment.

AKG steering coupler went on today. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a little trouble getting it lined up but still only ~1hr job. Steering is much tighter and it feels great. My car had started slightly grabbing back and forth when coming to a stop. No sign of that so far after the install which is nice. Really impressed with it. I also tamed the coilovers down and adjusted them to the "6" setting. I'd been driving around on "9" for the past week lol.

Angel eyes removed and sold locally as well.

Well its $170 for the FCABs pressed in the housing, so its semi-expensive up front, but when you send in your lollipops and get a coupler back, it feels like a good deal. Regardless $150 total for the setup is worth it IMO. Car is very solid. Maybe look into 90A? They're probably very close to stock.

Fender rolling action. Brakes and end links came in on Friday. Should be on this week.

:rofl I haven't even had my car for a year. In fact, this car is the longest I've ever owned a car at 10 months long. :biggrin

Haha, I was the same way when I was your age Dario. The ZHP is my 10th car. 10 cars in 8 years is a pretty good run. Aside from the beater JEEP I had in college, I've owned the ZHP the longest as well.

There's times, like last night when a modded 335i flew past on the highway, where I get the itch to get into something a bit more powerful and raw, but everytime I walk up on the car I smile. There's just something about an e46 sedan that does it for me.

I know right. I'm always driving. Part of the reason I chose the ZHP over the M3. Miles=smiles.

Congrats on your year of ownership.

Good choice on the zhp steve. So what is next for the car?

QC_ZHP
06-25-2014, 12:31 PM
Few minor things like stud conversion and wheel rewrap, etc. But next big project on the list is LSD, no question. Starting to really get the itch, esp. with MFactory's sub-$1000 option hitting the market.

LSD is a great mod. And that price is not bad at all for an HLSD.

It's a new LSD coming to market for bmws. They're working on one for the e46 and e9x platforms. Lots of talk on e90post about it. I'm looking into picking one up pending reviews

Steve, contact Hotchkis for a replacement part. I would send them email so you can also send them that picture. They're good about sending out replacements. I had this happen to my 323i many years ago and contacted them. Their customer support was awesome :thumbsup

I shot Hotchkis an email yesterday. They said to wait 72hrs for a response so I'm being patient. The have an office about an hour away from me so I can drop in if need be. I've heard great things about their customer service as well, so I'm not worried about it at the moment.

Steve, How are you liking the PSS coilovers? They are number on top of my list for a coilover system.

Also do you remember if you needed the upper and lover spring pads in the rear? And the front only needs the upper spring pad?

vas, i've got the PSS/B14 sitting in a box in my garage, awaiting install. :) they were my top choice as well.

re: the spring pads, just the lower on the rear, i believe (upper is the adjustable perch), just the upper on the fronts.

Love them. I believe Peter is right, although its been awhile since the install. The perch in the rear should replace the pad. One thing to look out for is the picture below. Mine did not come with a washer and I've heard some have but make sure to install one or else this may happen. Simple fix but annoying situation.

That would be great. I got a feeling that the upper and lower spring pads are needed in the rear.
