Okay guys

I bought the ZHP in June of 2008 with 26k miles. Since then the trunk trigger has not worked. This is the button above the license plate. With the car all unlocked it wont open. It is not in valet mode, and it opens with both the keyfob and the button by the hood release. Also by inserting the key in.

I removed the trim piece one day to see whats behind, but it seems like it is all one piece with the exterior trim....

I kick myself for not getting it checked out when it was still under CPO. But I dont use my trunk all that much and when I do I usually have the keyfob in my hand. But I want to fix this. The dealer cant deactivate it maybe, can they????? Could the trigger itself be faulty?

Any ideas guys????
Thanks

Sounds like a bad actuator if I am understanding you correctly. This is a common failure.

Hmm so is that the button itself??

It's the thing you press when you're opening the trunk. Right above the license plate. When it goes bad, it typically sounds like a machine gun. Then, it just flat-out dies.

Okay gotcha! :)

My dad's M3 used to act up once in a while, but never failed. I guess mine musta failed before I got it.

Stathi, that's just my guess, though. Have it checked by your indy mechanic.

Sure thing. I bet you are right though. I will get it looked at once I start driving it again.

Just checked, trunk release handle is not part of the programming options. The actuator for the release is the same no matter how you open the trunk. Probably the switch in the handle itself is bad if it works from both the remote and the button inside the car.

This is the part number for that switch from Real OEM for my car. Looks like it's around $40.

I always thought you had to buy the whole unit, I had to at least when I changed mine out for corroded plate lights. It was $75 at BMW and it does have a 2 year warranty. The issue is if you have a painted one ( im sure you do ) then it will need to be painted since they are all primed.

I advise not removing your old cover, it was a pita and it didn't seal right and just messed up the plate lights again.

Thanks for the response man! :)

See I had removed it last year and it seemed as if it was one whole unit...thats what kind of got me to just leave it...

Stathi, I'm always selling the trunk lid grip with trunk release button.

Yeah that is what is wrong. BMW confirmed. The thing that sucks is having to get the trim painted to match as white said above
