Very nice Shawn, glad you got her home!

Well at least got her. We still have about 400 mi to go until we get home. Stopping to pick up an OEM roof rack in White Plains and a little jaunt up through Harriman State Park, NY where Raj (Fender215) guarantees me there are some fun twisties. (Just hoping my daughter will let me drive that part!)

Made it back home w/out a hitch. Pit stop by Bruce's to see him and Botond before BP headed back north. Thanks for the help tracing the cig. lighter fuse. Next on the list is to order new rear tires as one is to the wear indicators. Title and registration tomorrow then VA inspection once I get the new rear rubber.

Shawn, if you don't know about it already there's a DMV Select at the courthouse, titles & registration only, no licensing stuff, never any lines, you'll be in & out in less than 10 minutes. Go to main bldg and ask for the Treasurer's office, co-located there.

Car titled and registered yesterday. New rear tires (Conti Extreme DWS) should be at the house today. New windshield from Auto Glass Guru scheduled for Thu.--includes cowling from BMW of Alexandria and new molding. Also orderd new PS reservoir gasket and fog light covers. Still need to install yellow fog lights, though I may wait to see about getting the bumper re-sprayed along with dent repairs on hood and left front fender first.

Shawn, where did you order the DWS from? Just wondering since I am in the market for tires as well.

As far as painting, I would do the complete front end and then blend the doors so the paint matches.

Not out of the question Bruce--eventually, but you should see the bumpers on the Accord Marin drives! She swears it wasn't her, but kids in the high school parking lot. Whoever it was, I don't need damage to the rear end of this car. Hmm, what if she backed in and there was damage to the front end...?

Hmm, I thought I updated this thread earlier, but don't see it.

Thank you for the complements. I do love the NB interior. Need to give it the full Leatherique treatment in the near future.

New front glass installed today by Autoglassguru/Windshieldguru. It was actually a local sub called USA Auto Glass. Thanks for the recommendation Dane. They brought the new cowling with them from BMW of Alexandria. While they had it out, I glued a few spots on the A-pillars and hit the dash with some 303 Protectant.

Still need the VA inspection and emissions, but figured I'd wait until the calendar clicks to "11".

Thanks Bruce. I may take you up on the assistance w/ the strut bar mod. How is your next weekend? My wife is out of town in training then and if I don't try to go to the Citadel vs. VMI game, I'm pretty free.

I need to get the bay cleaned first too. I'm considering an alignment next week as well. I'm assuming it would be easier on the tech to do that prior to strut bar install. Any issues with the alignment coming "undone" when removing the three strut nuts?

BCS_ZHP
11-07-2013, 09:01 AM
Shawn,
My simple engine bay cleaning method:
- begin with cold engine
- hose down your fenders, hood, bumper, windshield but not under the hood yet
- spray a degreasing cleaner all over under the hood (I've experienced great results with Purple Power cleaner), may need to agitate some thick stuff with a brush
- let sit and go do something else for 5-10 minutes
- rinse off and should be good
- repeat if necessary
- last, start the engine and go for a drive to get the residual water out of there

Wetting the fenders, hood, & bumper are to protect your paint in case you overspray some of the cleaner as it will eat thru your wax.

On the strut brace, I'd install it before the alignment. The holes are slotted so the mechanic can adjust the strut as needed without removing the strut brace. Modding your battery connector will take us about 5-10 minutes - it's a grind the plastic cover & try it procedure, repeat as needed, real easy.

Next weekend, have another kids' soccer tourney in Bethesda, not sure what my schedule is like yet, CINCHOUSE issues her tactical plan a day or two prior. I may try to take off on Fri, Nov 15th to get some stuff done on the cars though.

As I said 0500 comes awful early (plus I"m almost 50!)

Shawn - my better half ended up going for the C300 4matic afterall! Seeing this still makes me long for the OB/NB ZHP combo...ah well. Funny, my wife was just commenting on how Merc. didn't really have any cars for younger people.. hee hee.

There is some sort of regulation regarding the stripping of paint from plastic, and body shops have to be licensed in that and blah blah blah... I was also told that they COULD sand it down and spray, but the paint would be much more brittle than if they were able to paint directly onto the bumper. Both shops told me both of those things completely separate of one another, so there must be some truth to both things.

Edit: Also, that regulation against stripping the paint from plastic pieces requires them to record every drop of the materials used to do such.

NC or Federal? VA shops haven't mentioned it. I have one more shop to check with.

^ Are you using the auto setting? When on auto, it doesn't blow the same temperature out of all of the vents; it blows whatever it feels is necessary to keep the temperature at what you set it to. I'll have cool air coming out of one and warm air coming out of another on mine (this is normal).

If you dont mind me asking, did you ever get a quote from a body shop?
So I have several quotes now. I just got back from seeing a guy who has a mobile booth that the PDR tech recommended. He happened to be at the Toyota dealer about 5 miles from my house. Used to work at a shop and started his own business and now services several dealers in the area to include Mercedes and Volvo. His estimate to repair and repaint the left bumper is $375. He said he could also replace it with a non OEM fender for $150+ painting (~another couple hundred).

2nd shop quoted $1900 to repair fender, hood and respray hood, bumper and both panels.

The 3rd shop I went to gave me the following breakdown in case I wanted to piecemeal it:
Left fender repair and paint: $465, Hood and Rt. fender: $620, Bumper: $576 = $1661

I'm leaning towards going with the $375 repair the mobile guy gave me for now and then perhaps trying to do the hood and bumper at some point in the future. Not sure how that will work with fading in the two fenders.

I'd appreciate any advice or lessons learned from anyone here.

Shawn they look great. I've been putting off tint for a while now, mainly b/c I enjoy the clean look, but the glares inside are starting to get to me. I was set on 50% but 35% actually looks very good. I know you have a mix, but how do you like the 50% up front? Would you go with the same setup again now that you have it done?

ELCID86
12-24-2013, 07:25 AM
Thanks! Colin likes the 35% up front, but I didn't want to be that dark. Just something about the perception (in my mind) about having blacked-out fronts (or any) windows. I wanted some privacy, some relief from the summer sun/heat, etc. so I went with 50% I do went to like it. I have it on the Accord and TSX fronts also. I think I like what I have and would do it again.

Like I said, Colin's's rears are supposed to be 20% and mine 35, but it doesn't look that way. Though mine has only be on for <48 hours and his for several months. Perhaps it changes a bit over time.

Colin did remind me that his interior is Tan and mine is a bit darker NB, so that might make a slight difference.

Honestly, if you're gonna tint I would recommend keeping it the same for your side and rear windows... both my BMWs have 35% on side and on the rear window. The tint is uniform all the way around and the LEOs here don't bother me. Personally, I kinda like the uniform tint rather than going very dark on the rear windows and lighter in front....but that's me.

ELCID86
12-24-2013, 07:32 AM
Worth considering. The installer did recommend 35 on the sides.

The only think I would recommend is exchanging the titanium clear corners on Colin's car for clear corners with the black inserts. Otherwise, they both look awesome!

VANOS out! Hope to get her back together tomorrow.

Can anyone comment as to whether they used RTV on the rear of the engine? Whoever did the last job used something back there. I can't see any comments that verify I should so I only plan to use it on the front near/on VANOS.

I used red RTV at all half moons, front and back, and all the way around the vanos.

Red is overkill since that is a high temp rtv. Grey is great because it is oil resistant.

I used a small amount of red RTV at the front and rear half moons and the two contact points where the vanos meets the head.

Never had a leak issue afterwards (done it 3 times).

Red is also oil resistant, but either should work fine. I had other uses for the high temp, so I went with red.

Shawn,
I thought about that too late after you left today, I had an extra half a tube of red in the garage. Yes, as Keith & others said, use the sealant at the sharp edges of the half moons both front & rear and then where the head-to-Vanos gaps are on the front. Also a tip from a BMW tech, if your gasket won't stay seated in the valve cover, put a drop or two strategically in the channel of the valve cover so the gasket will stay in place while you install it. Don't get too happy with it though, it's a bieatch to remove the next time you do a VCG replacement. Stuart also told me to use blue painters tape to hold the VCG in place and then carefully pull it out once you get the VC seated. Call me if you have any issues tomorrow, I'm only half an hour away.

Not necessary and a giant pita when you have to do the vcg again and have to scrape all that crap off to get a clean mating surface.

Well I finished the VCG and VANOS seals. A/C tensioner came in today and I was able to put it all back together. Took a drive to get things heated up and all seems to be in good order. I found a nice icy spot in front of the high school and played with the DSC button a bit--pretty fun. I didn't know there were two setting until reading other posts here.

I also installed the little door near the oil pan.

I think both Bimmers are headed up to the Massanutten to ski for a few days tomorrow.

Looks good to me. I have similar creases on the driver seat bottom. I'm not sure how to tackle them. I've conditioned them a few times trying to soften them up, hoping they'd be less apparent, but didn't really do the trick.

I do need to clean them up some more to get them back to that original tone, which yours appear to be.

I'm so bummed. I got my car back from painting and it looks really good. I think there is a spot or two that will need touching up in 90-days or so after it has hardened/cured, etc. I was getting ready to leave when I noticed the windshield was cracked right down the middle. Right under the rain sensor all the way down to the cowling. As you may recall it was just replaced with Pilkington glass in Oct. I'm hoping that windshieldguru will repair it but they are pushing back saying they need someone to inspect it (understandable) and that if it was related to install stress, it would have happened before now. CSR on the phone hinted that perhaps it was the cold... Well it's been a lot colder here than it was this last week. The P&B shop said he noticed it this morning and does not know how anything he would have done could have put stress on the glass. It's been indoors at his heated shop. No signs of rock chips, etc. Arrgh.

They are fine. My old lenses were fluted and pitted pretty bad and not real bright. I like the look of these with the amber corner/side markers. I bought some replacement clear lenses for the old housings and may redo them when I repair one of my wife's TSX lenses that took a rock and lost. I'm putting Lexan on them. Might actually be a good idea for our cars--pretty much bullet proof. I got the yellow ones from a guy on e46f.
