So I made the move on an M3. I wasn't sure it was going to be in my future because the ZHP made me happy but I was itching for a manual and figured why not go for an M3 while I do the switch to manual.

Well, what actually happened was I stumbled across the M3 while looking for ZHP sedans (MT) in the Sacramento area because it had a ZHP knob. I fell in love and it had pretty much everything I wanted. I'll add a couple things to give it my touch, but the majority of mods are tasteful and already complete.

Here are a few terrible pictures until I get my camera back. Wheels are v718's in gunmetal (hard to see in these pics)

Nice pickup. You keeping both cars?

No my ZHP is for sale. I'd love to keep both since the ZHP auto is perfect for a daily and LA trips to see family, but those are few and far between so one or the other would be sitting a lot. If rather let someone else enjoy and love the ZHP.

I'm going to start parting out the ZHP this weekend so some goodies will soon be available for the crew here.

Congrats on the pickup Sean but sorry to see the ZHP go....too bad you can't find a way to keep both. I know speaking from experience, I'm happy to have both. :)

With that said....now start posting pictures of your ///M! :biggrin

Don't make me regret my decision man. I'm already having a hard enough time letting the ZHP go. If the M3 had four doors I would say it was a no brainer to let the ZHP go, but it does have such a classic/timeless look.

I thought about getting new wheels a couple times for the ZHP, but always came back to the decision that Style 135 looked too good. I bought the car for the wheels/ZHP package so I kept it that way.

Sean, congrats, car looks great, we need more pictures. I just went through exactly what you are going through. Ever since I bought my first e46 back in 2003, I longed for the e46 m3. To my eye, it was the perfect car. Aggressive looks and a tightly wound performance S54 engine. I loved my ZHP, a 2004 Orient Blue/Gray leather, 6mt with 78,000 miles. I struggled for weeks over having to part with her. I then I found a 2006 Interlagos Blue, 6mt, black leather interior, zcp with only 19,000 miles...and it was local. Wifey gave me the thumbs up and I knew if I went and drove it I would buy it. I held off for another week then went. It was over. Bought it cash the next day. While I really really miss the ZHP, the M3 is just :jawdrop

Derrick, you really can't compare the ZHP against the ///M. Two very different cars in my opinion. Both have very unique characteristics that I thoroughly enjoy, which is why I ended up having both :)

One thing I really like about my ZHP over the ///M is that it has 4 doors. Having a coupe is nice, especially when its an /// M but there are times when having 4 doors is much more desirable :)

That's why I mentioned to Sean if possible it would be awesome for him to be able to keep both cars

Did my first valve adjustment last night.

Took a while but I'm positive when I need to do it next it will be a piece of cake. I was planning on doing the belts, but I managed to break off the top of one of those plastic pins that expand and hold the fan shroud on. Now I need creator ideas to get it off.

I'm open to suggestions.

Time for adjustments?

The last adjustment was done at ~30k and it is now ~58k. Thought I'd start it off right. The main valves that needed adjustment were the exhaust valves which seemed loose.

I'm sure you had all the correct clearance numbers, but just FYI exhaust valve clearances are always a little larger than intake... I do valve lash on the large diesel engines on the ship, and the feeler gauge is about the size of a common 12" ruler! :biggrin

Yes the exhaust clearances were larger than the intake, but still a little loose from spec. Loose isn't as loose as I'm making it sound. The mid spec number is .30mm and a couple might have been at .34mm - .35mm. Intakes were around .20mm which is within spec.

They are every 30k miles or 15k by BMW standards. Either way it was very close to 30k for my car. I bought everything because it was less than getting it done at a shop. I'm open to rent if you or Seth need the gear.

Yea I thought the same but did my research and it didn't seem to terrible. Only issue I had was dropping shims, but I was smart and placed towels all over the engine to stop them from going anywhere I didn't want.

^ Yeah, I've heard it wasn't too bad. I had bad visions of dropping a shim into the engine and having to fish it out though...

Yea I dropped two shims when I was getting to the hard to reach valves near the back of the engine. It dropped when sliding into place on top of the valve - probably could've been fixed with a different angle or maybe I was getting tired. Either way the shop towels caught it and I was able to use my magnetic tool to grab it. At that point in time I was extremely happy I took the time to do it right and set myself up for success.

When I bought the M3 I found out that the owner did not have it smogged because he called an incompetent person that told him it did not need to be. This was at 6:30pm in the Bay Area and I did not want to come back another day. I had historical smog data showing it was good to go so I just had him pay for it by bringing down the price.

My first attempt at smog = fail due to high hydrocarbons. I thought why would I get high fuel in the exhaust? Well maybe the valves since it is time. My suspicions were confirmed with the loose exhaust valve clearances. Now they were double confirmed with a passed smog certificate. Glad that part is over and the car is now in tip top shape.

LSB, PY, and imola interiors don't do it for me. I'm very plain in my car choices. The most out there I'd be willing to go is natural brown or cinnamon. Oh and I love alcantara seats.

However, every time I see photos of any of those colors/combos I drool so hard on the Internet. I think they look absolutely stunning but I wouldn't own one :dunno.

The ///M3 comes with vents just like coupes and you cannot close them without holding the switch. I modded the switch to enable the one touch feature and coded the feature using pasoft.

Not sure where to rant about how awesome realoem is so I figured here was good enough. I cannot imagine owning another vehicle in the future without such a great resource such as realoem.com. I can source part numbers and know when I'm getting ripped off, figure out which suppliers have the best OEM pricing easily, find just the right part I need for a job, etc. There are other invaluable resources for the same job, but I always find myself cross referencing or something.

I don't know who runs the site, but sometimes I have nightmares it'll get shut down...just like that DIY you forgot to export or save to a local drive and all pictures don't exist anymore.

Here's what 50% light smoke looks like on TiAg
http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/M3/M3-002_zps88264eb4.png

I also went with the 50% light smoke for my front corners so everything would match.

I really like my smoked front comers, but unsure of the rears. I really need some alone time with the m in the garage. I have a road trip to LA this Wednesday so the ZHP will be stepping up to the plate.

Nothing wrong with the m but I'd really like to do the fluids and other maintenance before I take her on such a long drive.

Sean, look at it this way.... since you already have your front corners smoked, it would only make sense to smoke the rears as well to complete everything. If anything, you can go with a light smoke like what I did for my ///M. I think with TiAg, a darker smoke would look really good due to contrast but I was looking for a difference in shade rather than contrast so people could still easily see the brake lights as well as turn signals. Going with 50% light smoke provided everything I was looking for regarding styling but at the same time not compromising on safety. Something to consider :thumbsup

Installed SSK and M5 lit knob.

Ended up going under the car for the clip but was able to use both my hands to snap it on without taking anything apart aside from the plastic coverings. Woot!

Noticed an oil leak which is most likely from my valve cover gasket (only thing I've played with recently) so that is lame, but at least I caught it.

Minimal difference in the SSK, but I'll know for sure once I give it a test drive.

You need a shorter knob to feel much of a difference. I did BMW ssk and zhp (all cantata wrapped) knob and it was noticeable but not till I put the new knob on. I think M5 knob is taller.

Yes that pic is from leatherz the guy who takes a zhp knob and makes it illuminated. Too expensive for my tastes now that you can buy an F10 M5 knob for about the same price. I was going to get my zhp knob wrapped by Mike, but knew I wanted the lit knob so that'll have to wait for a while. I want I enjoy the leather for a bit.

Didn't know where else to put some humor of the week so I'm putting it here.

I have had the M3 on jack stands for a couple weeks after I did the SSK install because I was going to take care of a CDV oil leak. I was meeting Giya for the weekend to swap strut bars so I removed the strut bar after placing some jack stand below the a arms thinking it would hold up the struts over the weekend. Well that didn't happen and I came home to struts chilling in the wheel well. Hmm...how the hell am I going to get the strut up high enough to put some nuts on the strut and lower the car to replace the strut brace???

I ended up using a jack under the wheel while locking it in place. Worked for one and went to the other to discover the struts/wheels are connected by a thing called a sway bar lol.

The sway bar made it impossible to get the second strut up. I lowered the first strut and came up with a new plan. Took me quite a while to figure out how to maneuver everything but my girl helped me so glad she was home to help out.

Tbc...

2nd humorous event of the week.

I got over the whole strut ordeal and now have a sexy strut bar I need to take photos of. So now I was set on test driving the car to see how I felt about the SSK.

...well major facepalm. I put it on backwards. Everything I read said have the bend in the back, but I had the elbow in the rear and needed to flip it around.

This is not exactly how you want to shift into 3rd gear:
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/11/bu7eqa9y.jpg

I undid the circlip, flipped around the shifter but still need to install the the circlip again. I got extremely lucky the cup wasn't seated.

Well had I actually checked the first time I would have noticed, but I left the car untouched for a good two weeks. I'm just happy I seated the cup incorrectly which made the switch extremely easy.

Just finished the CDV and CPV. They were both super easy with the correct tools. I spent a few hours messing with the CPV using what I had and finally bought a 5/8" flat head 1/2" drive socket with 3/8" to 1/2" adapter for the job. 10 minutes later I had the oring replaced :facepalm.

Just glued the alcantara boot to the shift ring and waiting on install before a test drive in the morning :)

Overall I'm a happy camper (was getting discouraged with the CPV) and can't wait to test drive the SSK with CDV delete.

I though about doing headers and adding the SGT section1 with cats. It would still be better flow than OEM.

I talked myself out of it until spring or summer sometime. It's a lot of dough to possibly not pass smog and need to find a shop.

I haven't driven the car in about three weeks because of the SSK install and humorous other occurrences I posted about previously. I finally had a chance to take her out for a spirited drive this afternoon.

What a difference! The CDV delete and SSK with M5 knob is perfect. It truly transforms the drivability of the car. It isn't an extreme change but enough to notice and positively improve the shifting experience. This engine is something else - raw and powerful. I can't imagine headers and a tune.

The zhp now seems loud again after not having the tse3 for a while. I still stand by the DD ability of the z but I want the intake, exhaust, and tune if I'm keeping it. I should've thought about that earlier.

derbo
12-15-2013, 09:42 AM
It's amazing how the stock M3 shifter and knob feels so terrible compared to the stock ZHP. The notchiness is nicer on the M3 but the throw and the long knob feels like it was outdated and non-sporty. After I removed my CDV and added a Z3M short shifter, the ZHP felt so much better.

I started to enjoy the SGT exhaust after adjusting the hanger bolt torque and adding a little dynamat to the trunk. It doesn't drone but it does have a low/deep sound under load in the 1.5-2.9k RPM range. I can hear the engine again...this is a much louder car than the 330i.

I've been putting together a list for the vanos job I'll be doing and need to replace the tensioner gasket while I'm there. In the near term I'm looking forward to the diffuser install and eventually a CSL boot. I think once I get the maintenance and rear finished I'll look into the SGT front lip - I think it ties the front end together nicely. I'll have to check my new garage to see if that'll be an issue or not.

So I have a question for those into the M3 or YouTube fans. Eisenmann sport (not race) exhaust with 83mm tips, stock exhaust with custom tips (3"), or stock muffler with resonated x pipe and custom tips? I'm ok with a slight increase in volume, but the agency power or SGT exhaust was too loud for my liking.

For the custom tips I would be making a single wall polished 304 tip with about 10 degree slant.

The Eisenmann Race was actually not that loud! My old coworker sold his to get a Scorza exhaust (I think I spelled that right). It sounds nice and doesn't drone out too much.

Yes I like that idea, but wish I could hear the race version to understand how loud or is. I imagine even if loud like the SGT I would like it better because less fart can and more S54. I didn't mind how loud the SGT was until trying to have a phone call in the car while driving around town. Highway was fine, but shifting gears with the loud noise and talking was almost impossible.

Giya, not sure what you're up to this Saturday but I'll be having beers from 12 noon to 3ish in SF on a pub crawl. Invite goes to Derek as well.

I can't say I'm going to be too fun because I'm driving or being driven rather to my parents house afterwards for a family event that evening so it's not like I'm going to be hanging out all night lol.

Hate?

If you had not modded your car the way you have up to this point, you would have had a boatload of extra money.

That money would have been burning a hole in your pocket. To quench that burning feeling, you would have had to buy plane tickets to Turkey.

In Turkey, you would have met a woman name Bercu Kaya.

You would have purchased a good number of drinks for you and your new lady, Bercu.

After spending the night, and some days later you would have found out that Bercu was pregnant with your love child.

This was my plan too I just don't see the cost/benefit ratio on a $3000 intake. It sounds ///Mazing but you're better off with a used stage 1 supercharger system to make power. If I had the coin burning a he in my pocket, sure, but so many other things to do.
If I found one for $1200, sure. But other than that... nah.

I've had a leak coming from the chain tensioner gasket for a while now, but it was a drop every night so didn't prioritize it. I finally had some time to find the right socket. I bought 3-4 sockets in order to find the perfect fit. I had a little shy of 3.75" to work with including the breaker bar.

This didn't work:
13008

Winning combo:
13007

I'm sure you can't see much, but it is a photo of the area where the tensioner is located. I had to use a flat head screw driver to pop the old gasket off and then clean up the surface.

13009

Getting the tensioner torqued back to spec is impossible so I torqued to Sean's good enough spec when I felt the gasket give a little. There really isn't any space and I spent 5 min wrestling with the socket to get it off after tightening.

This is the tensioner.

FML... Exhaust hub tab is broken. The one thing I don't have is the hub because I was expecting mine to be in good condition so I bought a oil pump disc from Raj at Beisan. Lucky Raj takes returns (full refund). I'm going to have to get a TT hub and the M3 will probably be down until sometime mid next week. Got a second car so no biggie other than being pissed off.

I guess the good thing is I found it before my S54 went boom...assuming I don't drop the tab in the engine...WTF?!!

Definitely. It becomes a little harder because I'll have to take off the timing chain and time the engine when the new hub is installed. I'm having a hell of a time getting the engine to full retard. F'n 24mm open wrench is too thick so I'm filing that down. I tried a crescent wrench, but without the leverage the engine is a PITA to turn.

I meant to do a lot more work than I did today. I didn't get into the garage until 9 and stopped around 10:30. Instead I took a walk around the neighborhood and enjoyed the weather.

Took the car to SF and Napa this weekend. The E46 M is raw. It makes me think I get the same feelings those who first drove in cars felt. The raw connection to the road and fear it might break apart while driving at speed. Only difference is I know it won't break and it hugs the road, but with the suspension and engine in this car I just feel like I'm holding on for dear life. I can't say it was comfortable because it wasn't, but it was fun.

I literally thought I was going to bend all rims and destroy my suspension in SF and Napa roads were difficult to drive smoothly with traffic. The car wants to be driven hard not easy so when there is traffic it is difficult to stay in one gear which results in switching back and forth between 1-2 or 2-3 because either one of the gears become too twitchy in the torque (higher rpm) band.

Anyways just thought if share my thoughts from the weekend.

So I'm working on setting up my computer for pa soft still. I used to have one but it bit the dust so now I'm rebuilding it. Need to check out the errors for the wheel speed sensor or something because I can't get dsc to go all the way off - only the yellow signal but no yellow brake sign after holding. I sold the euro headers/cats to a local guy and will revisit when I have more time. I've been enjoying the engine noise lately but could use a little something more pronounced without drone which is incredibly difficult with this car - I was so close to ordering the SGT SCZA exhaust and think I would've been happy, but couldn't pull the trigger for ~$1200. Muffler alone wouldn't sound that great.
