I'll start with my buddy's in his daily M3. He is a professional race car driver just enjoying his M3 lol.

Looks like fun on street tires!

That was fun. I bet if you had Michelin PSS's the tires you wouldn't lose traction as much.

Im sure he wouldn't have but the fun wouldn't be there doing it in street eco sumitumo tires.

Eco tires? On an M3? Even if it's a daily, that is completely pointless... lol

This past time on the track in June was the first time I actually used performance summer tires on the track. Before that I always ran my daily driving set (all seasons) because I was too lazy to pack the car so early and swap the tires upon arrival. The improvement was almost unmeasurable... it's amazing how crappy all seasons are on the track.

Too bad the set of tires I decided to abuse that day cost $1000 for a set. FML...
Luckily they still have life on them. For now.

But... if it came down to doing track days on the most eco friendly crappiest tires ever, I'd still do it, because feeding the addiction is more important. :biggrin

The cheapest of the performance tires I believe is either Hankook RS3 or Dunlop StarSpecs. They are the most practical for track days.

You can make then last 2 seasons.

Mount, and flip the tire to the other wheel to even out wear.

2 years worth of wear on my RS3s. There is still life left but I'm not tracking the Z4 anymore:

My first AutoX of 2014, on Feb 1st with the BMW CCA at Marina Airport. We got 9 timed runs. This is my 8th and 2nd fastest run--forgot to run camera during fastest run (of course). This run was 42.261 and my best run was 42.154. The AutoX chair drives a ZHP coupe and was 0.9 seconds faster than me. He has stiffer springs and a 3.46 diff, but I was on used slick tires while he was on Star Specs or Rivals. The faster prepared E36 cars were running around 40 seconds and the Formula Ford race car on Hoosiers was running 36/37 seconds.

I had passengers on every run, varying from 1 to 3 passengers along for the ride.

3 passengers! That's a full load!

I'm trying to cheap-ass a Go Pro solution. Anybody have any recommendations for a mount for my iPhone? I figure why buy a $150 go pro when I can just use my phone :)

LivesNearCostco
02-24-2014, 09:41 AM
Yes, 3 passengers is a lot. With 1 passenger I don't feel any performance difference, though if I drive the same it's usually like 0.2 seconds slower or something than running with no passengers. With 2 or 3 passengers, the car corners differently and braking is slower and more sluggish. Don't have suggestions on the iPHone mount but have definitely seen people use iPhones to track in-car track video, sometimes combined with data acquisition using an app like Torque or Harry's Lap Timer.

Here's video from my autoX yesterday at Candlestick Park. Only had camera running for my last (and 2nd fastest) run of 48.557, with best run being 48.265. Again I'm about 2 seconds behind the fastest "normal" cars--there was like a Miata, E36, E46 M3, Ford Focus ST, and a few other cars that ran from 2-2.2 seconds faster than my best run. I also coached a first-timer in an E90 M3 and a guy who was on his 6th AutoX event in an E39 M5.

A better driver driving 0.7 seconds faster at 47.8 (E36 M3?). He's on Hankook R-S3, and they seem very quiet.

My last fun from yesterday. I can't remember, but I think it was my 2nd best time.

I'm really disappointed in my A/S tires… I don't think they're as good as what I had on the 325 even though they were 25% more expensive.

StephenKirsch, I enjoyed watching your video. (The lack of pointer cones drove me kind of batty in trying to figure out which way you were going to go around a gate, though I guess going the other way would in most cases have taken you into the grass.) What kind of all-season tires were you on? Was the problem understeer? I've never ever autocrossed on all-season tires. My original Bridgestone RE-760 summer tires weren't the stickiest, but probably better than most all-seasons.

For this past Sunday's AutoX at Candlestick Park, I keep seeing more and more videos of people running 45.x or 46.x seconds, making me feel slower and slower in comparison! Here's video from a first-timer I was coaching on Sunday (in an E90 M3 coupe). He's much better than I was at my first AutoX.

I forgot what they are. Something like "plus 3" or something. I'll try and remember to look.

Lots of under steer and a bit of over steer, although this being my first time in the zhp, I kept DSC on.

The lack of pointer cones was a first for us. Apparently this was the "old school" way. I dunno. Seems stupid to me.

Looked up the tires I had on my 325. Tread wear rating of 300. My tires in my zhp are 560. Nearly crapped myself. What a stupid mistake. That explains so much.

Gunna see what kid of credit I can get and maybe swap them out.

LivesNearCostco
03-06-2014, 10:54 PM
I don't think UTQG of 560 is that high for all-season tires. My original summer tires were rated around 345 or 360. Of course, that doesn't mean you'll have good grip on them...

az3579
03-07-2014, 05:35 AM
Those ratings aren't the same between the manufacturers. You can only compare that rating between tires of the same manufacturer, not across multiple brands. So, a Michelin rating of 300 isn't the same as a Bridgestone rating of 300, for example.

This is what I read on Tire Rack's site at least.

Yea but there's gotta be some relationship that a 300 is much softer than a 560. That's nearly 2x.

I've autocrossed on both tires and can confirm the 300 was A LOT stickier than the 560.

It was fun and wet! But not like in those GGW videos they used to hawk on late-night television. I only went off twice, once each day, both times when track was wet. The PCA people at this event were all nice, though I didn't really talk to many of the racers. I did notice that after the time trial runs on Sunday afternoon, I was almost the only one changing wheels and was the last driver to leave the track! After thinking about it, I realized...
--Porsche drivers can't drive to track with extra wheels
--Serious track drivers trailered their cars so don't change wheels
--Most racers and many DE drivers packed up after last session/race, didn't do TT

There was one older Porsche transporting 4 track wheels on top of his roof rack, but other than that I was like the only driver changing wheels.

Get the hands away from the top of the wheel.

Try to keep them at 3 and 9 throughout the run. Only shuffle steer when needed at a tight corner.

Slipping your hands on the wheel is going to lead to inconsistency when you start getting faster. As well, keeping the hands at 3-9 will make you quicker and recover from and loss of control quicker.

I posted this in my Build thread, but my fastest scratch from from Sunday at the Tour:

Attended my first autocross school a couple weeks ago. Fully enjoyed it and learned a lot. Steadily improved times each run on the course. We agreed that my girlfriend (along with the spare tire getting removed), will be taking pictures next time so I can make up those two seconds and beat the other ZHP! :guns2

The other ZHP and I were in the "T2" class, but I do not think it was the standard class profile since it was a school setup:

3 E.H. #108 2004 BMW 330i ZHP Silbergrau 32.486 +2.875 +0.305

4 Daniel McEnrue #114 2005 BMW 330i ZHP Imola Red

Maybe hot weather and lots of tight turns are hard on all seasons? Saw your video and sounded like you hit a cone right at the end but maybe that was camera mount coming loose.

Here's my 4th and last session at Laguna yesterday. The instructors, A students (and the guy in the orange M3 GTS--A student?) make me feel so slow when they pass me.

It was. It's not as technical as I would like. Just a lot of big switch backs. The crazy number of runs we get makes up for it, though.

Derek, I should hire you as a driving coach! I didn't catch video of my 1st or 3rd session, nor the first parts of my 2nd session, but the best recorded lap time for last Saturday was 1:57. While that is 5 seconds better than my best known laptime at O'fest (2:03), it's still 7 seconds slower than your best lap. And much of my improvement can be attributed to stiffer springs and stickier tires than during O'fest.

All I can say is if I ditched the instructor that might have been good for 2 more seconds, then you'd only be 5 seconds faster than me. Which at my level at Laguna Seca, is a whole lot faster.

When I did T-hill with the PCA, we had sporadic rain the first day so there were some incidents with contact. I talked with a P-car owned who smacked the tire wall, but not too hard. He literally buffed out much of the visible damage overnight and drove his car (more carefully) on track the next day. He was left with a small dent, some paint scratches, and a cracked tail light. He had HPDE insurance but with a 10% or 15% deductible and a declared value around $70,000, it wasn't going to cover fixing his car because the repair cost was not high enough.

So I finally got around to watching the video Derbo linked to:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DC3fgT7Uxa8

I've always wondered what makes a race car sound like that. It's not exhaust, nor engine noise, right? It sounds very mechanical. Any insight would be nice.

QC_ZHP

Probably has straight cut gears. I could be wrong, but it sounds awesome either way.

stephenkirsh
06-17-2014, 07:51 PM
What are straight cut gears?

QC_ZHP
06-17-2014, 08:03 PM
Normal gear boxes are helical, which means they are diagonal and they 'mesh' together in turn. Straight cut gears are parallel and come together at a 90 degree angle. The consensus is straight cuts are significantly stronger and can take the abuse. The major downside is the increased noise.

My first two sessions at Buttonwillow on July 26th. Running stock staggered sizes with 225 front, 255 rear, so every big turn has understeer when I push it. In session 3 I switched to square R-comp setup and that was going faster until the incident.

These two are not that exciting, somewhere I think in first one a Miata passed me then spun out in front of me so I went around.

Derbo was sitting in my car when I "decided" to give him an up-close view of a very rare driving event. Car-to-car contact in (non-racing) HPDE events is very, very rare. Most incidents are spins or offs with no contact. Most contact incidents are with a wall, or a one-car rollover. After more than 4 years of HPDEs I managed to find one of those rare moments.

They allow non-instructor passengers at your events??? Not fair!
My friend has been dying to come with me but that isn't allowed in our chapter. :(

LivesNearCostco
08-12-2014, 08:02 AM
Our CCA chapter doesn't allow it for HPDE either and also requires all drivers to start the day with instructors. Only instructors can give rides or be passengers. All drivers except "A+" group usually have instructors for the at least the first 2 sessions each day. At our last CCA track day, I asked several instructors to give my visiting nephews rides, and one even gave a ride using my car. I think this is BMW CCA National policy.

This was a Speed Ventures event. They allow intermediate and advanced drivers to carry non-instructor passengers. NASA (at least in California) also allows that for HPDE 3/4. Many other groups do not allow it.

LivesNearCostco
11-15-2014, 10:06 AM
The usual pointers... late apex is safer, brake in a straight line, finish downshifting before the turn-in, be smooth on the brakes, and put your fist out the window and up before pitting. You know, he never told me to look ahead--either he felt i was looking ahead enough, or he was focusing on other things.

My buddy has that has his background on his Note 4...I've laughed every time I see it so I figured it'd be funny avatar, plus Chris Moltisanti was getting a little old.

As for the diff, I loved it. Car felt so much smoother with DSC/TSC off then it did in the prior Autox's. Just wanted to attack the turns and I could feel the car better through the throttle. There is still more practice on my end to utilize that, but it's definitely apparent. The 3.46 has been excellent. Absolutely no issues with that. Couple road trips and plenty of driving around town, felt better during the Autox as well since you stay in 2nd the whole time, slowing down on turns wasn't as noticeable of a hindrance. I would say it matches our cars better and is a great mod in and of itself. I sit below 3k rpm for most highway driving and can't remember the last time I accelerated to 60 from a dead stop so the "can't hit 60 in 2nd" hasn't bothered me.
