View Full Version : DISA valve replacement time

I'll be doing my DISA valve later this month.

My main question is will there be anything "cleanable" on the intake manifold when I pull out the valve? If so, how should it be cleaned?

Also, any tips/tricks from people who have done it? I know it's pretty easy but you never know.

Those are all good links. I'll definitely reread them before I do it. But none of them mention any cleaning around/of the intake manifold.

I might just be over thinking it and there isn't much to clean :)

Even if you are replacing the disa, you still might consider the Gas upgrade.

I'd only clean the manifold if you are taking it off. It you start spraying stuff in there, it's obviously not coming out... It'll start dripping down towards your intake valves, which is not good.

I visually inspect anything underneath the DISA. TB, ICV, hoses in the area to see if there are leaks or anything suspicious. Wiping the area to clean the dirt that may have caked on over the years is a good idea too. I usually wipe anywhere I didn't have immediate access prior to disassembly.

I'm referring to spraying stuff into the disa hole. Won't whatever you spray leak down to the intake valves?

If it is already in there, I'm sure it will burn off hahaha :D

Go find Smoltz's catch can thread. The build up in the intake is resolved by getting rid of the BMW CCV system.

Ok how do you properly remove the DISA valve connector?

Looking from the top down I see this little clip.

So I pull and push on it with a screw driver. Doesn't budge. With almost everything on these cars, I just needed to push harder. So I do that.

Boom broken clip holder! (The top part; look closely). So did I do something wrong? Is it just 10 year old plastic?

The connector seats on the DISA unit just fine but I guess it COULD come loose and pop off now that the clip isn't secure.

Sigh

That type of connector needs to be pushed straight towards the body of the connector. It's spring loaded. I'm thinking by the pic that you were pulling it laterally?

Yup. Push it down.

I didn't see a spring anywhere, nor did I hear one fall anywhere.

I was pulling to the left, according to the photo.

I tried pushing down. It never moved. The clips, the one I snapped, are positioned left to right. Which is why I pushed to the left.

I believe the metal you depress doubles as the spring. Don't believe there's a separate spring so I probably should have picked a better descriptor than spring-loaded.

Ultimately, though, you needed to push it down, not pull it left or right. Might not have been aligned properly from a previous removal by PO if it didn't move when you pressed it down.

Not the first of us to bust a clip and certainly won't be the last unfortunately.

I'm still 99% sure the clip is designed to pull left to right (when standing over it).

But I could easily be wrong, considering I broke it lol

My issue is that I'm scheduled to help my dad do his DISA valve too. I don't wanna snap his either. I guess I could just let him do it and watch :)

Go with the 1% for your dad's. Trust me. :biggrin

I didn't realize how big this thing is until I have the new one not installed on the car.

Anybody have an idea what the big hallow box area is for? I don't understand why a valve has to be so big!

Found this video and thought it was neat.

Use a lighter to help determine if you have a vacuum leak.

All set. Warmed up fine. Time to take it for a drive and put it under load ;)
