Honestly, I don't know where the slips went after the event....I think they ended up in my buddy's M3 inside the helmet I borrowed from him.

A bunch of us went in a large group out there, that was half of the fun. We all played tag on the interstate the whole way there.

Here's a look at some of the other cars that went with (all the euros were in our group along with that built vette).

Thanks. It was a lot of work....and I know most don't know the story (I'll keep it short). I had just completed (within 6 months) - Lifetime warranty coilovers-K Silverlines, Brake kit, VANOS, Coolant overhaul, and all of the other stuff that goes wrong on E46's (1 window regulator, Exhaust CPS, Exhaust boots, DISA, battery, tranny fluid refresh)...so yeah..it was a heart breaker.

I would love to take the zhp to the track....just once...If I may.....but I haven't researched it enough (i.e. don't know where track is, requirements, etc.....)

Everyones track pics make me jealous. Heck...even the rolling shots do that. I hope to get some good rolling shots when all the fella's come out in June. No one should leave the meet without at least one good rolling shot of their car.

Jeff, That 1st pic looks like a fun and challenging sweeper. Looks like you need a good footing prior the the corner if there's a long straight before it. Coming in hard and braking I can envision having to quickly trail brake off to balance the car into the elevation change or else, oooops....there goes the rear end while braking too hard! If there's a nice straight just after then I guess you can try to compensate it with some throttle to get her back in line! Thinking that makes me want to go out driving...damn!

Street Touring Xtreme. I'm in that class because of the suspension mods I have.
One reason why I'm piiiiiiiiissed that I can't get a supercharger. That would put me in a class I cannot compete in without spending a year's salary on the car.

STX was FTW. I had alot of good competitors every single time. I ran (around 20+ people).

What would supercharger bump you into? SMS or would you go into STU?

There are a ton of classes for SCCA Autocross.

This year I will be in A-Stock (or AS). I'm going to get my butt handed to.

A supercharger would add me to Street Modified, which is a highly competitive class. People in this class like to spend lots of money because the amount of mods allowed on the car is almost limitless...

This is the problem I had with the E30. It had minimal amount of mods, but the S50 engine swap immediately placed it into Street Modified and I could not compete. I was last almost every single time, even if I had spectacular runs (for the car). I didn't invest enough money into the car for it to be competitive even with a professional championship-winning driver.

Besides, I really like STX. I actually have a chance to be competitive in it (on a local level, that is). Considering the car has been to three auto-x events since I got it (before the season ended) and it won first in class each time (twice with my co-driver and once with me driving), that means the car is capable of winning the class. STX is a very popular class and is also very competitive.

Yea. I didn't have the best of tires so I was only placing mid-group...but I always found someone to competition with.

We have a 318ti that just kicked butt in STX. He was running 245s all around and just just a nimble car. STX is the place to be for 3 Series IMO.

Mainly to guard against rock chips....but when you are running on a course all by yourself, it makes no sense...lol

I could see taping the fogs and splitters from cone damage, but that's about it. When I first started out, it was pretty rough...I nailed some good cones. And my bumper was fine.

I took this shot from my video camera. Nice little screen shot.

It's amazing how overtime you get so natural with your cars width and you can practically put the car ontop of a cone w/out hitting it.

You should have left one nostril open so the car could breathe. It looks like it's being suffocated. Even the eyes are taped shut. Some kinda sick game or something. :(

I'll find a pic of the engine bay for you. But yes, it does, somewhere just under the four digit mark, but has trouble with traction on the dyno. HKS big twins with VPRO and a Hypertune IM, cams, etc...

Engine, though, which of course is good for about 1100 or so wheel horsepower, hasn't been opened up.

Anyway, I derailed this thread plenty! Back to BMW's and I'll have my contribution soon!

LOL. Serious horsepower there, Ian. Speaking of Turbos and CA speedway I once took a Turbo 95' M3 around CA Speedway at a BMW CCA driving school. Friend showed up who owned the car and I teched it myself (don't ask) and then jumped out in the A group. I think in one of the short midfield straights I passed (with point by's of course!) 6 cars...all of which were quick cars and being well-driven. All hail the turbo ;)

Here's a picture from a test day with my E30 M3 maybe 8 years ago. No swaybars:

Nice!!! I've done AutoX but I have never done timed runs. So I have a question to ask the experienced AutoXer's. In my advanced driver training I was always told to stay as consistence as I can with brakes and throttle. A quick run is completely smooth when I'm the passenger of a car driven by a professional race car driver as they say being hard on steering, throttle, braking can unbalance the chassis and aid in losing valuable traction. But seeing some AutoX setups I have to wonder if being smooth would slow timing because it seems you need to man handle the car to make the car go and slowdown.

Master C got a great timing according to the announcer at the end of his lap...maybe I need to be in the car to feel it....I just don't want to feel like throwing up!! LOL Being rough with a car is fun though! There are times where I have totally lost a corner so I turn into a bull in a China cabinet and at least go down in complete style rather than grace. It sure lets out the stress!! :D

It was my best run of the day, I think I ended up in 5th of 12 in my class? But, I have to admit, I would have been faster if I had been smoother. It's very tempting to just go throw the car around but it truly isn't the quickest way. As an example, my grandfather and uncle went to NJMP last year. They both drove the same car. My grandfather is very smooth, shifts around 7800, but looks slower. My uncle isn't as smooth, shifts at 8500, but looks faster. In the end, my grandfather's best was a 1:31 and my uncle's was a 1:33. Even though my Uncle looked faster, he was slower. The perfect combination is being smooth while pushing the car as far as you can without upsetting it too much. What really makes you faster is having a good line; something that takes time and practice and is different for every course. Excessive braking, steering, and accelerating will throw the car's balance off and slow you down. But it sure is fun!

Rovert

I don't have any video of me driving from Saturday, but this guy in a bitchen 1970 911 had FTD. He was a little less than 5 seconds faster than me. I rode with him the lap before this video was made and I giggled like a school girl the whole time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zixjR7EdnyA

What's good about this video is seeing what his head and eyes are doing in the rear view mirror. Excellent vision skills. He's got an E36 M3 also, but I think we're gonna see this beast at more events this year and I'll get in line for a ride any time he's willing to have me. Real fun car!

He knows how to balance his car very well! His squeezing of the throttle and trail-breaking into corners took full advantage of all available traction. Wow. Vision is super important and whenever I was at the track my race car instructor told me to keep looking more ahead. It was really good teaching when he put a large piece of paper in my vision where I shouldn't be looking. He trained me within a couple laps how far down the line and corners I needed to look. This lesson plays one of the most important skills to have on the street. Very little will surprise you and you'll always find an exit for a situation that looks harry. I wish everyone had to take AutoX courses to get a license!

There are more E30's who weren't there and we usually have a few 2002's as well. We get a 7'er occasionally, an Aston Martin, a ZR1, GT3. In June when we're at a different venue we'll have a HS auto club who brings their 70's muscle car(s) to thrash around.

I'm going to run with the Porsche club in a few weeks for some more practice and to see how they do things at the same venue we use.

I need some Mafia members to start coming too! I'm sure we'll see them when we're at Great America and Candlestick. Some people don't make the trip down to Marina. It is kinda far, but it's the best venue facilities-wise.

PAX is an index developed to help compare times for top cars from different classes. So an STX car can drive a little faster than an ST car, and a bit slower than an STU car, and they'll get the same PAX result, on average.

Those pics are from the first run. Right before I'm up to the line, I got out, turned the camera on and set to record. When I came back from my run, my camera was off. WTF?

Turns out the battery reading full before was lying. Haven't used it in a long time so the battery meter wasn't accurate. It was actually dead, so no video...

I'm not sure I'd use a car with a "VR6" badge on the front of his BMW as an example of good setup... Look at all that body roll!

Ideally we would not lift a wheel at all, though in reality lots of competitive BMWs do lift front wheels.

Sometimes you have to remember that not everyone has a chance to build a dedicated Autocross Car. Sometimes you have to realize their car has to be daily driven and can't go for a "stiff" set-up. Nor people have the money to do it either.

Wasn't trying to be a jerk, just disagreeing that both of those photos don't display a fair amount of body roll. I didn't say it was on-camber, he was slow, or that everyone has and should spend $$$ making their daily drivers horribly stiff track monsters--amazed you deciphered that from a single sentence.

I was making an observation about the roll I saw in that car, nothing more.

Not to get into it anymore, per Marcus instructions...but it's just like "other" forums where you look at a car and say.

"Wow, you're ride height is so high" You just make natural assumptions that that person doesn't like the way your car looks, and they probably want it lowered.

I'm afraid to post my photos to only hear. Wow, you have alot of body roll

I would never say something disparaging about another members car, particularly someone that is taking their car out and driving it like it was meant to be driven. To me that's the point of owning one of these fine machines.

The discussion turned briefly away from 'look at this pic of my car' (to which I wouldn't have thrown in my body roll 2 cents) to a conversation about car setup. Since we were talking about car setup I was disagreeing with you about the body roll on that image. It wasn't an attack on the car or the person, just a comment on the setup since that's where the conversation had led.

Apologies for any hurt feelings. The intent of this thread is definitely not to critique cars, it just took that turn inadvertently. So..without further ado, back to the point of the thread:

Sorry if anyone was offended, certainly there are plenty of competitive autocross cars that have a bunch of body roll, mostly in stock class.

But what do I know? I raw-timed all the STU BMWs at Nats last year, but couldn't make it count due to cones, and ended up in 46th place. :(

My point was that wheel lift can be ok, just gotta be sure you're lifting the right wheels. Or if you're a DSP BMW, try to keep it to one wheel in the air! ;)

Nice spin video from today. This is a friend of mine's M3. Caught a cone and it threw the whole car off into a spin. He was a little out of sorts before hitting the cone, which I'm sure didn't help. Pretty cool shot though and for those that don't/haven't autoxed you can get a pretty good feel for the speed from this clip. He didn't edit it, so FF to 1:20 to the start of his run (I'm the car in front of him if you want to see me launch).

The spin out took the the rear tire off the wheel and wedged a rock pretty good into the front bead. A quick trip to schwab though and he was back out running in the afternoon.

Seems like the car understeered then oversteered which caused him to never regain control. I had an instance like that when I got crazy...just backed off the throttle and gave up on the run...not worth it to me IMO

It was a little more than just a snap oversteer instance. The cone hit hit definitely threw the car out of whack. Had he backed off when it started to push he might have been able to save it, but something definitely got weird when he hits that cone. One of those freak instances that when you're on the edge of traction and control even a slight thing can toss you.

My last car was silver, this one is black, but oh how I wish they were both titanium grey!

Lookin' good Bryce, those angles show off the lack of sunroof nicely. ;)

Results from Yesterday's Event:

48th out of 85 RAW time, 46th out of 85 for PAX (Stupid AS). I beat a GT3 by .983 seconds and a Z06 by 1.843 seconds in PAX....both were on street tires and no it wasn't their first time out ;)

Still waiting on pictures

Great representation for the zhpmafia at autocrosses. Good stuff.

BCleaver, I'm envious of what appears to be your regions version of an autocross. Was that from a Pro Solo or Solo2? Looks like they just closed up a rural road with some corners and let you guys have at it (with some slaloms thrown in I imagine to limit the speeds). Ours are not as cool down here in So Cal but I think the San Diego chapter does a great job utilizing space.

That autox was out at spokane county raceway, so the setup was a little different than we ususally run. It's actually very similar to a national style course with big sweepers but also a good selection of other elements (chicago boxes, slaloms, etc thrown in). The site is a total blast, but a little more risky given we're basically doing an autox on a road course, so spins results in going off into the gravel instead of onto tarmac.

We normally run at an airport that isn't particularly wide so have trouble getting big sweepers so the changeup to the raceway is fun.

Actually little tire dust...most was coming off of the ground, it was a slipperly slope if you got outside the rubber already laid down.

So, I see you have one Go-Pro on the car, what is the other camera?

Both cameras belong to my codrivers at the event, the GoPro was Teddie's (our ladies driver) and the other one is Preston's, it's some kind of mini digicam. I also had my crappy in car cam set up, it was a little ridiculous.

I've got a couple videos uploaded so far, but nothing from Preston yet. I'll make a post once I've got them all gathered up.

You've got to be kidding me. With Qualcomm and El Toro you have two of the best sites in the country in SoCal. Not to mention a million vendors like Koni, Penske, and OS Giken right down the road and some of the best autocrossers in the country.

I was in town for the San Diego tour in March, and let me tell you, you have it much better than anywhere in the Midwest! (ok, Lincoln is a great site, but with no club to speak of, and good luck even getting over 91 octane in that town)

One from this past Saturday. We had our trailer wrapped with a new fresh look so I snapped a shot of a hot B7 and my car in the morning. Unfortunately the B7 driver did not participate in the event. It would have been nice to see that monster out on course!
