Price - $1500 (or best offer) - SOLD.

Short story: So when I was young boy, the E30 was that car that I always thought, "Wow - that's a neat car, what was that? I bet that's fun to drive." Fast forward to December 2006, I'm commuting 70 miles one way to work and gas prices are on their slow ascent to $4/gallon. I'm driving a 93 Toyota 4Runner and getting killed on gas. So I start using commuter buses and metro to get to work. One night on the way to a party, I pass my independent mechanic's shop and he's getting rid of his used car inventory to focus on other things. There I saw this E30 out on the lot. I was immediately excited. I stopped and gave a deposit to the salesman and picked up the car less than a week later. This car has been a blast to own and drive. Completely changed my outlook on BMWs and other finely made german autos. I used to loathe driving to work - now I couldn't wait to get in the car. It put a smile on my face almost as big as when I would ride my Ducati to and from the Navy base.

I've done the best I could with her - buying an old home that needs work, sending my wife back to college, and having a child doesn't exactly provide the disposable income that I wanted to renew and mod this car the way it deserves to be.

Known Mechanical Issues:
Engine uses 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles
Requires the coolant to be topped off approximately every 1000 miles
Considering the two above issues, I believe the head is warped or the gasket needs replaced. That said, this car is perfect for a swap.
When cold runs a little rough at first until warm
Occasionally, when warm, if I stall the engine will be flooded and take a few moment to restart - indy mechanic performed some troubleshooting, specifically checking for stuck open fuel injectors and could not duplicate problem.

Known Body Issues:
When I bought the car, the radio antenna grommet was almost completely gone. The trunk had a slight mildew smell to it - I fixed the grommet and let the trunk air out for some time. I couldn't find any other evidence of water in-leakage or damage other than a rust-colored water stain below the radio grommet going into the well on that side where the jack is stored.
Also from when I bought the car, the valence had some damage - I believe the iS lip may have been pulled off by parking blocks or curbs when parking. When I installed the fogs, I noted the paint was chipped around the fog openings and the bottom of the valence.
My car met with an unfortunate garage accident - pulling in one day, I clipped the tire of a wheelbarrow with my front bumper and the "leg" of the wheelbarrow it came down on my right quarter panel where it meets the hood. Needless to say that section of the right quarter panel was creased and it took the paint off down to the primer. I've been watching it for rust - from driving it this past summer, the paint may have chipped... and there may be small areas in that spot that have the early signs of rust. That quarter panel will likely need to be removed and have that damaged area pulled and sanded down anyway.
Recently the license plate lights went out on the car and ended up replacing the original housings because they were so brittle. When I removed the original housings, there was rust around both of the openings for the license plate lights. This was probably the most significant evidence of rust I saw on the car to date. The rust was down to the bare metal and the metal was flaking and pulling back.

Maintenance/Repairs:
I have receipts for parts and documented just about everything in a little notebook when it was performed.
Oil changes were performed at 3,000 mile intervals using Mann/Mahle Filters and Castrol High Mileage 10W-30. 1 QT of oil was added approximately every 1,000 miles depending on driving habits. I believe there was one instance where I went to almost 5,000 miles. Air filter changes were performed at approximately 10,000 miles using Mann Filters. Coolant is topped off approximately every 1,000 miles.

This picture is from a year later and shows some damage to the right side quarter panel at the top near the hood and headlight. Also seen here are the used fog lights I added and the aforementioned damage on the valance below the right fog light.

EDIT 7/5/11: I finally have fairly detailed pictures. Just want to echo what I was somewhat outlined above: This e30 is not a garage queen, but it does sleep in the garage. Rough around the edges... runs like a top (when random parts haven't reached their end of life)... and perfect candidate for a daily driver, refresh/restoration, or swap.

Thanks buddy. The paint is a little tired, looks like the clear on the front left quarter is coming off. I need to get some more pics to show the actual condition.

Is this LSD by chance?

I believe it is. In North America, the 325i with the Sport Package ('S') came standard with LSD's

Since I am not the first owner and I know how popular it is to do differential swaps for various reasons, I've checked a few things. I did the "LSD test" by lifting the rear and spinning one wheel and watching the other side spin the opposite direction. I also looked on the differential and found what I believe is the telltale "s" stamp which is supposed to indicate that it is a LSD.

I updated the main thread with this information.

You did ask me first John. (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?1334-New-member-with-e30&p=25772#post25772) That is why I posted this thread. My moral compass is calibrated such that in my mind you have first up on this car.

You mentioned selling your e30 before iirc. P.M.a price your thinking about. I'm looking to get another, mine both have some rust and body damage and sadly automatic tranny's. Send your worst price (lol). Come on Bill, you know its to time and money consuming to keep up with.:biggrin

Now that I think about it, I have seen a few guys up your way on BF.c looking for the clean E30s. I bet winters up there can be brutal on daily drivers.

Damn I would love to have this.

BTW... LSD was standard on the E30 325is. Manuals came with a 3.73 LSD and the autos had a 4.10 LSD. It's common to swap the 4.10 into the 5 spd cars for a little acceleration improvement.

Thanks Mike!

Appreciate the information! I thought I read somewhere that the ratios were fairly standard like that, but couldn't find the forum thread quick enough to confirm.

One of the wikis I checked when I posted the above thread listed 4 different differential ratios for E30s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_3_Series_(E30)

I'm not too familiar what the pre-87 cars had but I do remember the 88-91 iX had 3.91's front and rear and the old eta cars (325e, 325es) had 2.93.

Hi VA330CI! Thanks for your interest, but sale of the car is pending. If the current interested party decides against moving forward with purchase, I'll repost the sale price.

You are correct! The possibilities are endless! I love the e30 platform and got extremely lucky when I stumbled across mine. Be sure to do some research on the model and talk to the owners or past owners to find out what to look for when you purchase one.

If you are interested near-term, I would also suggest checking other forums supporting the e30 crowd...

Good point Mike! I do not currently have any interior pictures. I need to take some.

The car has the leather sport seats with the wear in the usual locations - driver's side bolster. The leather is definately showing its age. I'd like to try the method Monk3y posted in the detailing thread using leatherique to get some life back into the seats. It seems as though the driver side wheel sits further up than the passenger...could just be the angle. I'm slightly interested...just have to convince Mom that it would be a beneficial bonding project for me and my father to bond over for the times that I'm home.

Driver's side wheel? I think I understand. It might just be the angle. I can take more pictures showing the sides of the car... straight on.

I looked at the following two pictures to compare:

http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/ad185/bill_schuster/1990%20BMW%20325iS%20e30/IMG_5037.jpg
http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/ad185/bill_schuster/1990%20BMW%20325iS%20e30/IMG_5023.jpg

From what I can tell by driving it and walking around it, I can't tell a difference between the left and right sides. That said, what you said is entirely possible.

I believe the car is rocking some OE/OEM Sachs - so it likely that any suspension refresh would help. I've brought the suspension topic up to my indy mechanic three or four times and each time he's "checked" the shocks using what I call the "rebound" method (compressing/pushing down on the suspension and allowing it to expand, overshoot, and settle out) and each time he's talked me out of getting new suspension.

Sorry, I wasn't clear in my question :facepalm
I was questioning the front wheels. It seems as though the driver's side sits farther up, like the FCABs are shot...but you say they've been replaced...so I'm sure it's just the angle. Just wanted to clarify.

Does she still like to guzzle fluids?

billschusteriv
07-06-2011, 03:51 AM
No problem. It was 12:08am... 19 hours after I got up last... and 5 hours before I would get up next. I was so tired, when I first read it, I was like, "Driver's wheel??" and thought you were talking about the steering wheel. :rofl I wouldn't normally admit that, but I'm in good company... so its all good.

The entire left/right front control arms were replaced <40k miles ago, IIRC - bushings are hard pressed and not replaceable in the arms I had/have. IIRC, the only thing not replaced when donig the arms were the end links... and that was based on my mechanic's evaluation. The control arms are aftermarket, IIRC purchased from FCP Groton (?) or maybe acquired off eBay. The car had an alignment done by Apple BMW of York, PA immediately following the replacement.

I assume she would still guzzle the fluids at the same pace/rate if I was still driving her daily to/from work. However, I did find that she would guzzle slightly less fluids if I would drive her at a more leisurely pace.

billschusteriv
07-06-2011, 04:18 AM
Also remember that the fuel pump died the day I was taking the pictures... in full disclosure, I plan on replacing the fuel pump with a used one...

If it is desired to have a new OEM fuel pump installed, I can do that - new pumps are $220. Please consider that cost in any negotiations.

The last used fuel pump I installed lasted 25k miles and cost me $30. This used fuel pump will also cost about $30 but cannot make any guarantees on how long it will last.

She is still for sale. I haven't been pushing her because she's been a pretty reliable back up for the e46.

Okay keep me posted when you start to pursue the sale more aggressively. Got a swap in mind for this summer :)

Darn, he was ready to buy it from you this weekend.
I'll let him know and will try to call you again tomorrow so I could speak with you with him next to me.

(He's kind of desperate for an E30 -- goes to show the crack addiction an E30 can be)

Oh I know that crack addiction well. I get a hit everytime I sit in the drivers seat. :)

Sorry BP. It was a sudden thing - had a loss on my wife's side of the family. So we just packed up and left.

I have off next Friday, Sat, and Sunday. Saturday we'd like to take my daughter to a local zoo, but have no solid plans for the rest of the weekend.

Please be sure to have your friend look at post 1 and pictures so he knows the condition of the e30. .

No worries, family first, always.
I'll tell him about next weekend. He's just worried that the car will be sold from under him. lol
He can't wait to get his S50 back into an E30.

My goodness, I had awesome fun driving this car to Chili's after we bought it. Too bad it's not mine. :(
My friend is very happy though to have an E30 again! Thanks again, Bill.

Still wish it was mine. Your friend needs to join so I can keep track of the build. Also is he on rev?

He's not on any online forums. I don't see him being on them in the future, either, though that could change if I'm persuasive enough. :biggrin

I want updates. It really seems like Cemal is going to do some great things with her. Keep us (me) posted Botond.

I also know that I've really tried to keep her going. I'd appreciate any updates of any issues Cemal runs into.

If you guys want (Justin, Bill), I can make a project thread for this car so you could keep track of any changes that I learn about. :)

Damn, this thread makes me really miss my 1990 e30. I curse the day I sold her in 2004 with only 175,000 on the clock. Dumb idiot I am.
