It's pretty much all Inspection II related with a little OCD (aka love!) and wanting to learn/work on her more thrown in; once you start going down the list you'll catch up quick lol

I'm aiming to stay close to the Old School Maintenance guide and I have a "pay her off" and "preventative maintenance comes first" approach before any type of real modification, sexy wheels ( :p ), etc so that explains it as well.

Testing out Torque and the blue tooth OBDII adapter...pretty great for $25 altogether.

What are the threshold numbers to keep in mind? Temp, air/fuel, etc? Coolant temp stayed around 95C, going down quite a bit on the highway and then back up. AFR hovered around 14.5 at idle.

Yellow oil light came on after shut off...Checked oil when I got home after waiting a bit...

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/17/5ed12230d87f8720920f2c9552d43654.jpg

Cleaned front section and noticed some gunk buildup...is that vcg leakage, CCV mayo pus, or just dirt?

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/17/f979e3fbecb144dd5092a48b4a1046eb.jpg

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/17/43f0453062da480f51c1a2e99b07439b.jpg

I only have noticed the light periodically since my trips and overall driving time have decreased significantly...never was a problem for months after I changed the oil when my commute was 40 min one way and I had gone on a few road trips.

Could it be the shorter trips causing CCV buildup and tripping the sensor somehow?

Hornung418
09-17-2014, 08:32 PM
Take her for an Italian tune up after Katie's C&C. Thats should burn off any mayo build up in your CCV. For the seeping at the VCG, you may need to loosen all 15 bolts and retorque in the correct pattern to fully seat the gasket.

:rofl Will do. Get that 944 down here for it one of these days.

As for the VCG...I just bought a replacement...if I have to deal with getting to those bolts I might as well just pull the cover and gaskets for the sake of being anal...

Could be the oil sensor in the oil pan. I replaced mine once. Or the ccv system. Remove the hose from the valve cover that goes to the ccv and see if there is any mayo blockage.

Valve cover gasket usually leaks on the other side towards the exhaust.

Or the ofhg. Check for leaks.

Gotcha...based on what we saw the other day leak wise (nothing) I'm thinking it's either the sensor going bad or getting tripped somehow. I'll keep tabs on the level and take her out for a couple "Italian tune-ups" and check the OFHG area.

Service Advisor said about an hour or so, asked if I was going to wait, but I had work so I got that 5-series loaner instead. Was busy in the evening and picked the car up Saturday morning. I think when you get a loaner they move around when the actual work is going to be completed as opposed to if you are there waiting in the lobby...make sense.

Oil light still coming on ?

Thanks for asking, and no *knock on wood* haven't seen it since I added a 1/4 of a quart a couple weeks ago. I've been driving to work everyday almost since then (40 mi/day). No short trips with a cold engine. Will check oil level when I get home today as well, but this is congruent to what I had mentioned in the original thread about how I hadn't seen it the MONTHS following my oil change when I was driving a lot more and going on the trips...running hypothesis is the sensor was tripped by CCV buildup/oil burned through because of it.

Oil is full up. A tiny bit below the top indent. Same place I left it. These cars do not like short trips...

Just paid her off...detailed her this weekend...and then on the same stretch of 66 I've driven hundreds of times I glance for half a second to check my blind spot, turn back, what was a slow moving line of cars was a dead stopped Toyota Sienna...

This is my first accident...Any tips moving forward to make sure everything is done right, I mean, what should I do OEM vs. A/M part wise with the insurance estimator (is there any way to argue that or are you pretty much stuck paying the difference), paint wise, good shops in the NoVA area, etc?

She runs and drives fine as far as I can tell.

Steering felt normal, no vibrations/rubbing/etc, no damage to wheel wells, underneath everything looked in order (control arms, tie rods, etc), fan is running, no airbag deployment, lights all work, etc. No leaks on the roadway or parking lot after running the engine for a bit and temperature gauge stayed true driving to the body shop...

The radiator support looked bent but the radiator itself looked intact since the grill/hood had a gap between it. The headlight assembly is more than a third of the initial estimate I got this morning and that was A/M, but everything looks fine except a tab is broken and there is a crack in the housing right by it. I wasn't able to get the hood open to be sure of that and anything else so I left it at an autobody shop in Vienna today to have them take a look and give me a new detailed estimate with all OEM parts.

The full range of emotions hasn't really hit me, but I'm just glad the other person is okay and besides the initial feeling of dread/anger I'm alright as well...I just want her fixed up right...

bummer, man. glad everyone is OK.

you're definitely in for a new hood, grilles, radiator mounting bits, etc. there is likely more that you won't see until you take it apart - sometimes stuff is bent and while it looks fine, you find out it isn't.

push the insurance for OEM parts and then try to re-use your headlight.

Damn man, so sorry for you. If you're paying the deductible than you might as well get everything new even the headligh if it is just cracked. Hood, grills, headlight, bumper trim, and maybe the bumper also because the paint may Crack and peel prematurely now. The headlight and corner mounting points may be an issue.

Man this sucks. But could have been a lot worse. Good thing the airbags did not deploy.

But new hood, grills, headlight, radiator support, and paint will be needed. Plus whatever else is back there that might have been hit.

You said no leaks from the radiator? Coolant still in the expansion tank ? A/C works and no leaks ?

As far as repairs, I would get a couple of quotes from different shops since they do vary slightly. Post up the estimates here if you can and I can help you out.

Biggest thing is using oem parts and good paint/clear.

But don't worry since it will be fixed and looking better then before.

Agreed, definitely could have been a lot worse...and my friend said the same thing about it being fixed up better than before...cheered me up a bit.

And definitely appreciate the help moving forward, Vas. Here is the estimate I got today from the closest/most convenient shop:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/27396597/Ray%27s%20Auto%20Body%20Est..pdf

Almost a THIRD of the cost is in the headlight assembly alone...I'll post up more pictures of it when I get a chance. It's definitely cracked up, but otherwise everything works. Of course, I still need to get an estimate from insurance, but as far as I've learned, that really is just a starting point and most of the actual negotiations financially/part wise are done by the shop I choose to take it to...

Also, yes, no leaks the whole day the shop had it and were inspecting it, starts right up, A/C blows cold, etc. *knocks on shattered kidney grill*

Thanks, Brett! And yeah...I thought that was true myself until this morning...but it was a wake up call for me to realize that as much as I love this car it is still a car and these kinds of things happen, I thought I was a great driver, but all it took was a split second, shows that you always leave room and don't let your guard down, especially in this area.

Vas
10-08-2014, 04:12 PM
Daniel, that is a good estimate actually. Seems like they have all the bases covered including blending the front fenders so they will match the new paint on the hood and bumper. That is critical for the paint to match.

Headlight is expensive though which sucks. Not sure if you want to find a used one instead.

Keep us updated.

Edit.

I would ask what brand of paint and clearcoat is used. Ppg and DuPont is usually the normal stuff but some stuff is cheaper and won't last as long.

Hornung418
10-08-2014, 04:42 PM
Wow...you got super lucky! Sorry to see that it happened, but it looks easily fixable. No other panels were damaged? Just the hood and the radiator support? If the support is bent, it can be straightened. The radiator and condenser should be replaced if they are no longer true. I have an AL passenger side headlight with ZKW lens. I also have the other side interior bits if you can find a spare housing so your lights are equal. I can't recall if you have the ZKWs or ALs already...but let me know.

Yeah the biggest components were hood, radiator support and headlight assembly, everything else is just removing components to do the work, etc. And that's awesome, Justin! I'm not sure which type I have...is it a mix from the factory regardless of year E46 and/or can I look on the housing to see?

Easiest way to tell is if you plug the lights into the ballast directly (AL), or plug them into the back of the housing (ZKW).

I would definitely take Justin up on the headlight offer. Even if they don't match, you could later find an AL assembly to swap in the driver's side, and then you'll have lights that won't burn out. Consider this affair an "upgrade path". :thumbsup

Getting that housing will greatly reduce the cost.

Well, she is in the body shop's care now...D&V Auto Body came recommended with a couple negative reviews, but I found that every shop in my area had negative reviews mixed in with the positives...

http://www.yelp.com/biz/d-and-v-autobody-dulles

They use top of the line paint and PPG clearcoat when asked and seemed very much in my corner on the use of OEM parts. Told them to keep me updated twice a week and take pictures of the work. They guaranteed that if I noticed any problems they would correct them. I feel very confident in my car coming out better than before. Will update accordingly. I miss her already...

OEM ordered from BMW, now whether that means ZKW or AL I do not know at this time. Personally, either option would be fine with me, despite the ZKW's fault a brand new assembly would last awhile. And with the AL I'd work on replacing the driver's side to match. Those are the only two OEM suppliers right?

We were comparing with the other two cars and it definitely would look sleeker she said without it. I said I kind of like it since it gives it that touch of the newer bmw's design. Is it even something to done or is it a part of the car (hole in roof, etc)

Yeah, it was just a thought, like I said, I definitely like it as well. As for Amber vs. Clears. I like the front turn signals as ambers, they just SHOULD be amber in my mind... Side markers are a toss up, but I think they would look better as clears. As for the rear, I think it looks great either way. I'd want the LED Clears if I was to do it, not the RCR's. I'm a fan of the LED upgrade while updating the look.

Simple job that definitely makes for a better feeling on the butt dyno. The used oil was still very clean after 5k, but for 50 bucks, I don't mind changing it. So many things base their operation around the oil being clean (VANOS, CCV, etc) in these cars it's not worth trying to max it out IMO.

I IMMEDIATELY noticed a difference tonight...car felt a tad bit lighter on it's feet. And the Style 44's aren't that much better. Those runflat tires were absolutely horrible. It's so much quieter driving around at slower speeds. No more jet engine whirring noise coming to a stop.

me too on the ARC-8's in 17x8.5's, perhaps 17x9's. i'm not worried about the cracking with a 255/40/17 tire, although a crack on a 1-year old wheel IS disconcerting - it may be a fluke.

17's can look good, but you need to have the right tire size for it to look good. The problem is, the less sidewall the better the 17" wheel looks, but then that partially defeats the purpose. 17's ride better with more sidewall; if the sidewall isn't there, then there isn't much point to the 17's because you might as well have 18's.

Personally I draw the line at 40 sidewall on 255 tires, which I think is at the very limit of what looks good in 17" size. These are 255/40-17:

Granted, I hate the way my track wheels look (that's what those are), but size wise they almost look like 18's.

Mmmm felt good to be back behind the wheel today.

Car needed a jump this morning after sitting for a week or so and the first start attempt in the cold I brought back from Canada...

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/07/307edc014ea9c56b32042d780c7ea66f.jpg

Started up with a chug a lugging for about 30 seconds which went away. Figured things needed to get warmed up. No issues on the way to work. Going to stop by Autozone on the way home and get the battery (original) tested. What is the standard voltage, 12.7?

Back roads were unplowed/treated. Needless to say the Blizzaks were downright awesome. Using the one press DTC made a difference as well. You notice the power cut with the full mode on which is annoying.

Got a great look from an AWD Toyota SUV driver stuck on a hill when I started from a stop next to him and went right up with hardly any slip.

http://www.autozone.com/routine-maintenance/battery/duralast-gold-battery/603386_636952_0/

Is the H8 the replacement for the H7 or has more CCA? Says it doesn't fit on the site, but obviously that is false.

Seems to me most have gone with the 94R.

Yeah, based on prior threads I agree.

Hmm...I was looking at these two:

H7-AGM:

94R-DLG:

I set out to get the 94R, however, they were out of stock. Since my ZHP was dead, I needed a battery, and turned to the H8. The sales rep also informed me it wouldn't fit, though it is physically the same size as the 94R.

It fits great. The H8 and H7 are close to the same IIRC. H8 has more CCA, and longer reserve limits.

About $68/pc. Not cheap, but the old ones looked like sleeve of wizard...tired of looking at that, the bottom part is all sorts of messed up when you rip it out. Didn't feel like futzing around with fabrics and glues. Plus those, painting the rear deck and a couple pieces of the cube trim are all I have on the list interior wise...for now. :p

Good point.

Btw for the a/c pulley, do you have a part number ? Or did you replace the complete assembly (tensioner with pulley)

Just replaced the pulley, bought it on Amazon:

Dayco 89133 Idler Pulley (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001C6ITTK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

I followed this guide on E46F for the rest. Part number for the WHOLE assembly is on there, ordered through BMW it's $100+ Put that savings towards the cooling system parts which I felt were more important to replace than the tensioners which are not really wear items for a significant number of miles.

Daniel, your ZHP looks good compared to mine. Mine is covered with salt. Will be washing her on Friday before going home from work....

Gotta be a record!! 10 years on the OE battery...took the January cold to kill it off.

I've never had an aftermarket battery last nearly as long. They usually die on me within 2-3 years.
That is why my next battery will be OE if I can help it.

Prepare to be blinded by the light. Btw the rear lights in the c-pillars can be tricky. Make sure the bulbs are in the right way polarity wise before putting them back in.

Sounds good, is that something to check before you button it up by activating the lights somehow or just keeping an eye when installing?
