Hornung's 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo

So this thread will log the inevitable repairs that will need to take place with a car of this age.

Some details:

Alpine white 944 Turbo, internally known as the 951. 107,000 miles on the odometer with an impressive history and ownership. She is a former track slut, now daily driver. She makes 250 wheel horsepower and 260 wheel torque on aftermarket tuning and 15psi of boost. (I've played with the boost level and it definitely makes a difference!!)

Things needed are:


Compression and Leakdown test
Engine mounts
Timing belt
Find the oil leak - I suspect the Air Oil Separator or AOS (Common failure)
Fix the rear hatch glass - frame needs to be stripped, cleaned and reglued
Adjust rear hatch pins - Unending rattle when I hit a bump or imperfection in the road.
Need a good tune up with distributor, rotor, plugs, wires and an oil change
Silicone J boot (Runs from the MAF to the Turbo) wears just like an M54 Intake boot
New brake pads
Nissan Quest Alternator Mod replaces the archaic charging system from the 80s
Upgraded 7" headlights. Output is horrible coming from ALs with ZKW lenses and the trifecta mod :(

I'm confident I can do all the work myself and I'm looking forward to Sundays when I can get under the car and wrench.

I had it inspected before I bought it. The oil consumption wasn't brought up. But there are things you have to be savvy about with these cars. Lots of simple issues that might show up as a major repair level symptom. I.E. milk shake in the filler cap. I'm not burning coolant (white smoke), so its not a head gasket. But I am burning oil so it could be blow-by. If the crankcase is pressurized, then that will allow oil to be burned off as its forced passed the piston rings. The car isn't low on power, so I think it's just a bit of blow-by. Could be fixed by rebuilding the o-rings on the AOS or I could run a catch can and remove the vacuum from the crankcase. Stay tuned!!

Yes hopefully some vids shortly. She's a screamer when the boost is turned up past 15psi. It's rumored she'll hold 23 before overboost protection is engaged. Not trying to blow up the car.

Aside from the snakes of vacuum lines under the hood, this engine is surprisingly easy to work on. Lots of removal steps before you can actually get to the part you're trying to fix.

Just ordered a tune up kit (Filters, plugs, distributor cap and rotor), Timing belt kit (Belts, rollers and pulleys) drive belts for the A/C, PS and ALT. First big bill for parts comes to $445.50. Can't wait to get wrenching!!

She's awesome Justin! I miss my 944's ('80 931, '86 NA, '87 Turbo, '90 S2). I really think they are hidden gems, too bad so many fell into marginal ownership. If maintained properly they really have no pitfalls. I bought each of mine with between 30-50k miles, sold all of them with over 220k and never had anything other than regular wear items replaced.

Most will think me crazy, but I would never buy an E30 M3 over a 944 S2. Similar cars, specialized 4cyl, coupes, yet the S2 is faster, better brakes, lower production, and way more inexpensive to buy.

personally, the momo 'competition' wheel is my favorite aftermarket wheel i've ever used. it's got a perfectly-size grip that is the same diameter all the way around, and is perforated leather. it feels perfect in the hand.

Got a lead on turbo twists!! They are for 996. He's asking $750 picked up in KG territory.

They're 18s...but the dimensions and offsets are unknown. Asked him to send me pictures of the backsides tomorrow. If they are 10s in the rear I will probably buy them.

Need to look for winter wheels/tires. The LSD definitely has me looking forward to the fluffy stuff!!

A buddy of mine loves his Momo Competition - he actually just bought a '97 Miata (he used to have a '90 back in the day, and we used to track together) and hopes to put it in. I'm not sure about the airbag rules, though...

I have a Momo Corse in the 911. Very similar to the Competition but smooth leather, and has more pronounced thumb cutouts. It looked great in my 944 (and Miata before that, and in the 260Z - she's a bit of a slut)

Came with the purchase of the car. They are pretty sticky. Nothing like the Kumhos I had previously but they only have one drive on them. Searching for some winter rollers in a square setup. 15" phone dials or 16" Design 90s are looking easy to obtain.

They've used it forever, dating back to the first gen 911. Its easy to find the wheels...its not easy to find the money! A set of OEMs are easy $1000 for 18s.

i ran a set of these in 235/45/17 on a previous car. they were surprisingly nice for the first half of their tread life - good dry and OK wet grip, rode nicely, fairly quiet. once they got past, say, 60% wear, they got very greasy feeling, moreso in the wet where they were downright scary at times.

i won't be buying them again.

1) Upgraded gear selector
2) Short shifter unit
3) Spherical shift linkage
4) Delrin hatch bushings
5) Inner shift boot

They all are an improvement over the 27 year old parts.

New selector one bearing per side sandwich between two washers. This prevents the shifter slop.

The short shifter will shorten the throw by 30% and reduce the slop by 30% in the second position.

The linkage (3) removes the rubber in the system. That takes the task of preloading the rubber bushes out of the situation meaning quicker shifts.

The bushings (4) will hopefully reduce my rattle in the hatch area. Every fucking bump will cause the hatch to rattle the latches.

The inner boot (5) will seal the cabin from exterior smells that could enter through the shift boot. I've already smelled the clutch burn on a hill stop with about 30 cars ahead of me...not fun. This will act as a barrier.

Total came to $217 shipped! Installing the hatch pin bushings, gear selector and the inner boot tomorrow morning.

I love these. I always do a double take when I see one in good condition.

I came real close a few years ago to buying an older 911. I had a buddy who's family owned a junk yard and they had one in pretty good condition with 89k on the clock. It ran, transmission was good, and interior was REALLY good. It just needed some TLC. I was going to buy it for 3k but never did. Nobody wanted to take it on or didnt think it was worth it and would be a money. They were a bunch of Camaro lovers anyways. Would have been a fun project. They had a 60's VW bus that I had my eye on too that was pretty sweet.

Hopefully doing the timing belt maintenance next Sunday with the help of Aaron Miller. Can't wait to drive without worry! The belt is "out of tension," but as long as it is tight enough to keep time then we are set.

Prepare yourselves for videos next Sunday. Buying a used Go Pro Hero II on the eBays with a noise canceling microphone to route to the rear of the car.

Yeah just has two microphones like you see at public speaking events to remove the ambient noise in a recording. Also getting a windsock to reduce the wind noise even further.

The HTRZ3 is one of the highest-rated budget tires and my own experience with them has been quite positive. Compared to my BS S04PPs, they give up a little bit of steering response, perhaps a tiny bit of grip, but seem to be much longer-lasting. For a little more than 1/2 the price.

Now I have to admit I haven't driven on a really worn set of Sumi's, but I've driven Dunlops to the end without any real issues.

Nankang is definitely Chinese, I though Nexen was the lower end brand for Kumho (if that's possible!). I don't know if Nexens are made in Korea like the Kumhos or in China to save costs. I was surprised the other day to find that Cooper's top of the line performance tire was made in China now. I wonder whether these tires are being made in a "Cooper" or "Kumho" factory, or if they are contract manufactured? That can have a big impact on the quality control.

A quart of oil every 400 miles...which is surprisingly in spec to Porsche.

The seals are cheap; less than $5 per. So taking the Cam tower off while I'm doing the rest of the maintenance is just an extra 30 minutes plus the time to remove and install the new units.

Already came with one :) I'd have to see how big it is. The current tip has a flare from some kind of back up. If you can get the specs on that exhaust, let me know. If it's a 4" I might be interested. Think the one installed is 3 or 3.5 inches.

As soon as I get emissions done, I will delete the cat. Have a test pipe, came with the old girl.

Good news...the car has new belts rollers and pulleys. It's been timed and has new plugs, dizzy cap and rotor.

Bad news...car started and idled fine after closing the heart up, but I some how tripped the aftermarket alarm for which I have no provisions to cancel the alarm and the car won't start, because the injectors aren't getting a pulse.

My mother drove two hours to where I was having the work done to pick me up. Gotta be to work in 6 hours...

Reminds me of the time my E30 locked me out of my car - with the keys in the car and the engine running - because the keyless entry system that was installed decided to lock the doors on me the moment I closed the door after getting out. The cops had to pry the door open so I could use a stick to press my window switch button down and get in. :facepalm

I will take some pictures of the underside when I have it up next...mybhands were filthy so no pics of the belts and stuff. I will say that Aaron was extremely impressed with how clean my engine was. Its not leaking a damn thing! Or burning a crazy amount, as the spark plugs were in decent shape. We did find some oil floating in the coolant tank...so there are some seals that need to be replaced. Where the oil is mixing at the external oil cooler mount and very possibly the AOS seals too.

Also found out the car was in a shunt of sorts. The radiator mount is distorted on the pass side. And while not the end of the world, it does pose a threat if I hit something insignificant but big enough to pull the radiator out of its mount.

Those things asside my car has some expensive things on it like boxed steel control arms with replaceable bushings, a 29.0mm sway bar, an upgraded and very tough mounting AC compressor with R134A refrigerant.

So happy with a lot of things, disappointed with some others.

That is just outrageous. 80s and 90s alarms are ridiculous. Hopefully we can sort this ourselves without having to pay an expert to remove the setup.

UPDATE: I forgot to torque the spring tensioner on the timing belt and the engine jumped a few teeth. So the engine is out of time and the head needs to come off to rebuild the valves.

The silver lining is that I get to replace my valve stem seals, valve guides and a new head gasket. Since the exhaust and intake manifolds need to come off, the external oil cooler mount seals, and AOS seals will be replaced and hopefully cure my oil burning condition.

Sounds a whole hell of a lot worse than it actually is, looks like a timely fix, but the cost should be below $300 for everything we don't have.

The HG kit comes with all the gaskets on the back of the engine. Im running a Widefire HG, so I will replace it with such.

I'm just glad that its not an electrical problem as we thought it was. Now we know what it is.

Head is at the shop. Looks like a $400 bill plus an additional $100 because the valves that are bent are actually the intake valves...not the exhaust valves like we thought. But the head is gonna be cleaned and the valve job will have it running better than ever!

So lesson learned for $1000, make sure your nuts are torqued.

Machine shop...called them on Tuesday and got yelled at, for wanting to know the status of the work. Said it would be done on Monday before the middle of the week. The intake valves arrived on Friday morning...but they were late and focused the work on other projects. Slow is an overstatement with machine shops.

My car has definitely been abused multiple times on the track and beaten a few times by off roading or cone strikes. However the only thing that is concerning right now is the passenger side of the radiator mount is twisted and bent. It was like that when it was inspected. Gotta do some welding to fix the mount point but its not a big worry at the moment.

I will always hold this belief...the most expensive Porsche you can own, is a cheap one. Words to live buy.

You could do some maintenance...but the majority of the stuff needs special tools with no cheap affordable option. No where near as easy to work on as the M5X engines.

lol, BMW's are pretty good at being leak free..

That's what I thought until my wife worked as a service advisor at BMW. The V8s are notorious for leaking.They even have a term called engine reseal where they replace all the leaky gaskets. Every one we've had has leaked... 2 e46, e53, e82, the f30 isn't old enough to leak with only 19k on the clock.

An nother snag has arisen. The monkey-fisted tards that put the engine together at the speed shop in PA tightened the shit out of every bolt. So two different pieces have stripped threads. One of them holds the fuel rail in place...so we can't start the car until that thread is helicoiled. Super awesome.

That's probably why they are no longer in business...

However...Porsche torque specs are known to be quite conservative which is probably why they leak everywhere.

I have torqued everything to comfortably tight. If it's under 20 ft-lbs I just hand tighten it because you cant tighten it more than 20 ft-lbs.

So I have an exhaust leak before the turbo. Performance is sluggish, but she runs. I imagine I just need to re-torque the bolts and nuts associated with the headers and get the crossover port plugged properly. Should be fantastic when I get new tuning chips in the DME.

My costly error during a regular maintenance event is what took the car out of service. Nothing the car did...just human error, between two people no less. I'm not worried about reliability from hear on out. Just looking to get through winter in one piece.

And just to clear the air, I'm not looking for anybody's approval on my car. Follow along if you'd like, but check your butthurt feelings at the door. If my school-yard taunt-like Tapatalk Signature bothers you so much as to make a comment about it (you're not the first Bruce), it only means its working.

You can specify different sigs for different forums in TT.

It's all good though. If it's worth it to you to have it, go for it. If at some point you feel it's driving a wedge in the commaraderie here, I trust you'll do the right thing.

Moving on from all that...I found my exhaust leak today.

Lost a nut and stud on the fourth cylinder. Replacements and spare should be arriving on Thursday. Shit always happens on Sunday or Federal Holiday.

Full boost pressure isn't reached in any gear and it takes a massive amount of time to get up to 30 mph.

Super easy. Just install the new stud til it bottoms out in the head. Then tighten the 13mm flange nut til it won't go anymore plus a quarter turn. Should do the trick. I will snap a picture of the accessibility when the new stud and nut comes in on Thursday.

Thats pretty awesome! It has the M018 option...steering hub spacer. Wonder if he'll trade me...I would slap the big turbo on it and upgrade the DME and thats a rocket! The Fuchs look great too. I want a set...but the ABS offsets are too great. :-(

Well I just found a pretty comprehensive list of things the car had done to it. I have the full binder of the receipts, but this list is pretty concise.

Driving home from the city tonight after having some awesome beers, the gasket shifts it's position and makes an aweful noise...so like a dumbass, I get out my ratchet and try to loosen the other bolt so I can put the gasket into position and retighten...of course I burned my hand and dropped the wrench...then retrieving the wrench I burned my finger...classic.

Looking forward to getting that spare stud tomorrow!!

Stud and flanged nut are not arriving today...They ran out of studs before they could get mine in the mail. He's shipping today. I'm going to try to run an M8x1.25 35 mm bolt and washer as a temporary solution.

Header bolt that's missing happens to be the locating hole for the 1-4 header. The other bolt is an enlarged hole that just has to be near the stud hole to allow it to thread. Tried all afternoon and got nothing done but re-seat the exhaust gasket that blew out on the way home yesterday. This car is becoming my enemy every day...Going to have to figure out how to get this done tomorrow.

Annoyed and freezing. It's 43 and raining here now.
