The SMG Gearbox
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=597491

The Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG II) system has 5 automatic "D" and 5 manual "S" programs of varying shift speed, plus one "hidden" program – the fastest of them all - that is only available in manual mode with the DSC system deactivated. I call it the "are-you-crazy" program. BMW calls it S6.

Entering the S6 program, the CSL is showing its full potential. During maximum acceleration, shifts are very fast. There is, however, a noticeable shift process (which BMW claims to take 80 milliseconds). During moderate acceleration, even in S6, SMG seems to shift more slowly, probably assuming that the driver is not in such a hurry. There is a hydraulic clutch that works exactly the same way as in a manual transmission car, only this time there is no clutch pedal as the SMG system is controlling it.

In modern double-clutch transmission cars, shifts are so smooth that the driver hardly notices them at all. With SMG, you will notice when the system is changing gears, and so will everybody else: your passengers, pedestrians and even other cars around you. Especially downshifts are seen and heard from far away. Actually, downshifting is so much fun that in normal street use, I hardly use the brakes at all. When downshifting, the SMG system will calculate the optimum rpm and blip the throttle to match the revs. The driver does not need to adjust the throttle at all. SMG is never tired and never makes a mistake; each downshift is perfect and sounds absolutely divine. Quickly downshifting a couple of gears creates such a roar that it is impossible to keep a straight face. This car makes you smile!

To expect that SMG is both an automatic and a manual transmission in one car, is asking too much. SMG is a manual transmission without a clutch pedal. The driver has to know the rpm and current gear and decide what to do next. When the driver assumes this responsibility and drives in the manual "S" modes, SMG will serve very well. Sometimes it even offers a helping hand: if driver makes a mistake and rpm drops too low, SMG will automatically downshift so that the engine does not stall. However, if the driver is pushing against the redline, SMG does not automatically upshift. It respects the decision of the driver to hold on to the gear. It will only upshift when told to.

Shifts are made by pulling on paddles that rotate with the steering wheel (left paddle is downshift and right paddle is upshift) or by moving the SMG lever in the center console (forward is downshift, backward is upshift). The lever is especially useful when the steering wheel is turned over 180 degrees, as then it is sometimes difficult to figure out the new locations of the paddles, and therefore safer to use the lever. Reverse gear is located left and forward. Moving the lever to the right will toggle between automatic (see the first picture in this post) and manual mode.

The SMG system also features launch control and shift lights. Launch control applies full engine power, and to eliminate wheelspin, it controls the clutch. While this is probably the fastest way to accelerate, knowing how taxing it is on the clutch takes away the fun. Shift lights, on the other hand, are a fun feature, but I dare to say any driver would be able to time the upshifts even without the assistance of the lights.

The big question is, would I have selected a manual box, if that was available? Maybe. But then again, maybe not. SMG is so similar to a manual box, that the feeling you get from using it is almost exactly the same. Well, I know I could give a smoother ride if I was controlling the clutch, so if I was constantly driving with passengers I'd prefer the manual. But when driving alone, the hardcore roughness of the SMG is a plus.

Perhaps it is a good thing that BMW only manufactured the car with SMG. This removes the time-consuming speculation between the alternatives and lets CSL drivers enjoy what they've got.

This is the S4 setting that I normally choose for everyday street use. Notice how there seems to be one more "empty orange box" to fill, i.e. the faster program S5.

The SMG shift speed selector. Strangely, the symbols on the button hint to the existence of a mysterious sixth shift program!

Now the SMG is set at S5 and it looks as if there are no faster programs available. Still, the SMG button was telling another story.

Oh yes, the DSC. Pressing the DSC button will disable the Dynamic Stability Control and allow selecting the super-fast S6 shift program. (You can see that I have also activated Sport mode, just because the illuminated LED looked better in the picture. It has no impact on shift speed.)

DSC is deactivated. You'd better know what you're doing now.

DSC deactivated, finally the S6 reveals itself. There it is, available to be selected!

Yep!!! Gary and I had a discussion about this car a few days ago...so glad everything worked out for you!!! At least I got to welcome you to the ///M club first via text :thumbsup

Gary, you're gonna love driving this beast! Add Sprint Booster to this car! Trust me ;)

Remember to check your LCM to see if it has s/w 4.0 or 4.5 when you take delivery of your car. If you do then you can program one touch triple blink :thumbsup

Congrats again Gary!

For those tempted to get one....it's a logical choice ;)

Oh you are Good!! Yep its in Kansas right now. Never seen snow as the owner is OCD like me. It was purchased in Las Vegas and driven to and from So Cal by the first owner. The second and third owners lived in California. This guy lived in Cali , bought it and then moved to Kansas last year.

Yes I already read up on that upgrade. Will need to do that first! The owner is also giving me a copy of GT1 software. I think that's right anyway. It's like PA Soft.

Can anyone guess how much I paid for this M3?

2005 BMW M3 SMG with 90,000 Miles. Silbergrau Metalic exterior / Black interior with Brushed Aluminum Trim.

-Has every option except the competition package.

-Always adult owned by non-smoker, and other than the tinted windows and BMC airfilter (k&n style), this is a stock, unmodified, never tracked, practical sports car

-Clean Carfax and title

-Still love the car and the only reason I'm selling it is because I'm looking to switch to a two wheeled BMW.

-Spent all but the last year of its life in southern California, so no rust or other salt damage. Very rarely saw rain and never saw snow. Always garaged and/or covered, so paint and plastic trim/rubber seals are in excellent shape

-Mostly highway miles between LA and Vegas by previous owner (not typical SoCal stop-n-go traffic)

-Paint in excellent shape other than a few minor stone chips on front bumper and hood (bigger ones on front bumper in pictures are bug splatters that I didn’t notice until I uploaded the pics)

-Interior is almost flawless. Was meticulously cleaned and treated regularly, so the leather is still supple and smooth. Drivers left seatback bolster has the tiniest show of wear (worse in pictures than in real life). Very small nick in the drivers door leather above the side mirror adjustor (see pic).

-Extremely well maintained. Always used OEM filters and Castrol 10W-60 TWS Synthetic Oil

-Front brakes, water pump, drive belts and ignition coils were replaced (by a dealer) before I bought it.

-Rear brake pads were changed recently, as well as the air pump hose (crack in hose caused incorrect airflow code on cold morning starts).

-Some minor curb scuffing on rims

-Outside mirrors have slight staining from auto darkening fluid

-Just got brand new rear tires (the ones in the pics are the old ones), fronts are over 50%

-I had a highly reputable SoCal BMW specialist do a PPI before I bought it some years back and passed with flying colors. No SMG, VANOS or rear suspension issues

-Power seats w/lumbar adjustments, drivers seat has adjustable bolsters.

-Factory GPS Navigation, Bluetooth phone connectivity (not just pre-wired) and single disc CD player.

-Includes both keys, all original manuals and paperwork, trunk tools (including the electric tire inflator).

-These are the factory installed options:

Cold weather package (rear seat center armrest with ski bag, high pressure headlight cleaners, heated front seats), Premium Package (power front seats w/driver memory, BMW assist, Nappa leather upholstery), Front and side airbags, Rear Spoiler, Power glass moonroof, Adj seat back width and lumbar support, Park distance control, Xenon self leveling headlights, On-board navigation system, Harmon Kardon sound system w/10 speakers, 19” M double spoke polished wheels, Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG), Metallic pant (Silbergrau), Variable intermittent rain sensing wipers

-Also included is an OEM car cover, front license plate bracket, and a spare oil filter.

True. When I add up smiles per dollar it all averages out to the same as most other ///M prices. What I paid for was low mileage, local, and mint condition with all maintenance up to date.

There's an E46 sedan where I am in Guatemala and they don't like to use it because to them it costs $$$$$ to maintain so it's used on special occasions. Be grateful you have the $$$$ to maintain it as well as to modify it. There aren't very many countries that have those kind of economical resources we enjoy and take for granted every single day.

I heard the CSL Tune really improves the SMG transmission.

I didn't feel anything in the engine part...LOL. Only the SMG. Maybe you changed much more?

My contact changed SMG firmware for higher RPM launch control, faster more accurate shift and ECU firmware for off-throttle downshift rev-matching. No power increase to the engine though.

How much did that cost? How is it done?

Rovert

It was a couple hundred bucks to do that and redo all my lighting/key memory/mirror settings. For the SMG part he extracted the firmware, changed some hex code and re-uploaded it. He's done many cars as a side business so I thought I might as well let him do mine since it's just not a simple "flip the switch" modification. We did it all in a parking lot...LOL. My battery was brand new and strong so not sure if that helped in voltage stability.

Not bad. I didn't know you're ///M was an SMG also. Thanks for the info.

You're welcome. Treat your SMG like a manual and it'll be reliable. I always put my 6MT into neutral when I was stopped at red lights and I do the same with SMG. If I feel the SMG engaging the clutch a tad slow because of the setting then I'll make sure not to give it too much throttle until it engages. The computer probably doesn't know what burning out a clutch is.

I'm guessing a lot of SMG and/or clutch components are prematurely worn from drivers who haven't been in full tune to a manual transmission and how it works and how it sounds when it's being stressed.

We need to make sure we help it out as we, true manual drivers, know better than the computer's logic.

It's sure a fun partner to dance with when you lead well. She tried to kill me today (well maybe my right foot's fault) by accelerating faster than I could steer when a car suddenly came into my lane. LOL. It was easy to lift off oversteer with my setup to step the back out to clear the car's rear and then get back on throttle to stabilize. What a way to lose your lunch into your pants and leave them in the dust with ///M power. :eeps I'm still learning her everyday I go out for a rip and so will you!

WOLFN8TR

Good advice Trevor Thanks. It makes sense to drive it like a Manual as you stated. The current owner told me he does the same. The only time its driven in Auto is when his wife drives it. I grew up driving Manuals so I should be able to get the hang of it pretty quick.

Gary learn how to manually blip with the standard software. Learn that pause in between shifts and see if you can get it. It doesn't have to be perfect because even if I want to force a thunderous revmatch I still don't get it with CSL programming every time. At low speed the programming will still revmatch a downshift but it's not as aggressive at low RPM versus anything over 3,000. So when I have my @$$hole hat on, I'll make her bark on low rpm matches manually if that's a such word with SMG. :shift

Transform your Sequential Manual Gearbox with the redesigned transmission software directly onto your DME, available both for naturally aspirated and force induction E46 M3's.

Eliminates transmission issues caused by changes in Limited Slip Differential ratio.
Faster and more firm shifts in higher gears.
Smoother shifts on lower gears.

You will receive our USB to OBD2 programming cable. The end user will need a Windows or Mac laptop to remote program the SMG software. The software has many more benefits to help the weekend warrior or the all around car guy. It allows you to clear DME adaptations, read and clear codes specific to your BMW, and data log your car. This is a nice perk for anyone looking to take advantage of remote tuning their car in the future, data extraction for track use, or all you data fanatics to record, replay, and compare.

I must digress from the sole point of this post to discuss how much I love his CSL SMG tune. Keep in mind that I already had the original CSL SMG tune flashed (that you can find on this forum) for my car. In my opinion, the Frank Smith CSL SMG tune significantly surpasses the performance of that tune. Shifting is completely different. Each shift is sharp and aggressive, like a racecar. Around town I stay in S4, and use S6 for racing. S5 and S6 are incredibly fast and incredibly aggressive - far too uncomfortable for driving around town, but perfect for crushing the competition in a race. S4 is perfect in every way and the downshifts sound like the voices of angels trapped in hell (it sounds really good and mean). Before Frank's CSL SMG tune I was always riding around in either S5 or S6 and I was still disappointed with the way my gearbox was shifting - I wanted more. Now, I wouldn't even want to own an SMG E46 M3 unless it had the TTFS CSL SMG tune flashed to it - I'm that serious about it. To me, it is a must!

The difference is significant. Shifting up is impossibly quick in S4 (almost DCT like). Shifting down under load is awesome. Its almost like Frank & Co have written the SMG tune that BMW should have put in place originally. Smoother, faster a massive improvement on the BMW software.

My mechanic took the car for a drive after it was done. The look on his face said it all. Complaining as he got out that I have now made him have to spend the coin on his car (he's an owner too).

Highly recommend this tune to anyone looking for the best bang-for-buck modification.

Driving SMG is like learning how to drive a new transmission. It's a hybrid of auto and manual. There will be frustrations. I had those with auto, manual, and now SMG.

Tonight I was running in the mountains and canyons with my car in below zero for two hours. The bad thing with the winter tires are they can be squirmy. It was actually nice to not worry about a bad unsettling shift that could throw off the car in such condition. I know I shouldn't be driving to that limit and I am completely aware of how this car behaves with winters. The ZHP is so much easier to drive with winters than this beast. Moving at 60mph in 6th and accelerating through a corner at mild-moderate lateral G's threw the tail out a bit. I corrected with throttle and slow minor steering input just as it occurred. SMG was smooth enough to bring me down a gear quickly without even thinking to correct that. It was all about getting the weight transferred and loaded onto the rear tires for added traction.

Respect this beast a ton more when summer rubber is not mounted to it for the ///M could turn into a monster faster than you can say "oops!"

Trevor sounds like you were having some fun with the ///M!

Sean I read thru so many pages of SMG CSL tune threads. I didn't really feel comfortable tuning it myself so when I found Frank Smiths thread on SMG tuning and all the good reviews I had to get it!

Yesterday I let my wife Apryl drive the car. We are sitting at the light and I'm telling her how she can shift the car. The light turns Green and she floors it, shifts into second until the RPM's hit 8500 and shifts into 3rd. Dam!!!

Ya I wonder. Supposedly Frank said he took the CSL SMG tune the guys on the M3Forum were using and tweaked it. Guys that were running the CSL tuning said Franks was better. His tune gets flashed to the ECU not the DME like the CSL tune does. (I think I got that right?)

Yes it does, it rev matches similar to the CSL software. The SMG upgrade is only on the engine ECU.

We have a modified CSL SMG tune. Yes, it does auto rev match on down shifts.

Yep me too. I trimmed off the stops in each switch and nothing. When William helped me do my ZHP he also did some coding, he probably had to code it to do this feature.

You can also set it so when either door is open, auxiliary power to all 5 windows works without the key being in ignition. It's very handy when you're just going in to tilt the sunroof open or lower the side windows a bit. I have my key fob set so when I hold unlock, just the two side windows go down, leaving the sunroof and rear vents alone. Sometimes I want to cool the car in the summer but not expose the interior to sun which happens if the sunroof opens. But I set the key to shut any open window if I hold lock on the key fob.

I went from a smooth shifting AT ZHP with the Sprint Booster which I absolutely loved driving. The SMG M3 shifts like a pig with power. The shifts were laggy in Auto mode and ok in manual. I found myself trying to like the SMG and was missing my ZHP. I flashed Franks Smiths SMG Tune and went for a drive. Instant smile on my face! This is how BMW should of shipped the SMG! Shifts faster, smoother and the Rev match downshifts are amazing!! So worth the $189. Plus you get the ProLogger along with the ProTuner software. Win Win.

Oh Man!!!! That's awesome!!! Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get some black silicone and 3M double sided tape. The tape that's supplied is narrow in comparison. When I mounted mine, I used the wider 3M double sided tape to mount my lip, then I used black silicone to fill in the gaps. Now the lip looks perfect. When you get your lip it will ship with silicone but the silicone is clear....not something I would want to use to fill in the gap.

Be sure to clean and prep the surface of your bumper where the lip will mount. You want the surface to be clean and wax-free so the double sided tape will stick.

"M3 Guys Read"

Inexpensive Valve Shims Sourced - WiseCo VSK4

http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=467647

I know, the title seems misleading, I mean after all, they're < $4 each, right? Why bother? As self-titled keeper of the motorsport enthusiast M3 trust, I feel compelled to make as many changes to status quo as possible when it comes to protecting the financial interests of m3forum members.

So sometimes it only makes sense to buy shims individually if you have a dealer in close proximity, and only if that dealer sells them to you at a reasonable price, or only if you get them in on another order. In most other cases.... you'll want to read on.

I and another friend and forum member, after doing his valve adjustment (http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=467295), got frustrated with the status quo for what was $440 for a full set of shims so that we could just keep them on-hand while doing our own, and others', valve adjustments. His car was going to be down for a few weeks anyway, so we figured it wasn't a big deal to simply order the shims we needed and move on with life. It would have been nice to have an assortment of shims to choose from, but the money for a full shim kit was better spent on track time. (it always is)

As we all know, the stereotypical fleecing that's imparted upon us by BMW (amongst others) drives us to seek alternate solutions without compromise to performance or quality. As such, I'm here to post a review on the WiseCo VSK4 valve shim kit. This kit contains quantity 3 each of 8.85mm shims from 1.72mm to 2.60mm in 0.04mm increments. The OEM BMW kit contains the same shims from 1.72mm to 2.60mm in 0.04mm increments, but has 6 of each of those 23 different shims.

The difference? The VSK4 is about $38 + shipping, so a full replacement set to match the BMW kit would be just over $75 + shipping. That's a whopping difference of $364.

Skeptical as we were, we ordered a set anyway. After all, this is WiseCo, not some cheap knock-off (see RacerPro, ugh). Here is the set as it arrived:

http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=177271&stc=1&d=1391729111

http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=177268&stc=1&d=1391724068

Before the WiseCo shims arrived, we mic'd a NEW OEM 2.12mm shim. After three measurements at three different points around its circumference, it came out to 8.853mm in diameter. The same WiseCo 2.12mm shim mic'd at 8.849+mm in diameter for a difference of ~0.003mm (0.00012" difference). The magnetism was also tested and confirmed to be very similar to that of the OEM shims using an OEM tool, no difference was noted.

Most OEM shims have some variance in their thickness, such that 2.12mm shims may measure more or less than 2.12, so that measurement may not be accurate across a multitude of shims since there's only one data point. Regardless, our new OEM 2.12mm shim measured 2.126mm and our WiseCo 2.12mm shim measured 2.128mm.

The top side with thickness marking:
http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=177269&stc=1&d=1391724068

And the reverse side: (you wouldn't know which is which unless you saw the front)
http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=177270&stc=1&d=1391728219

So, what's the difference, then? Are the OEM shims hardened differently than the WiseCos? They're certainly not shaped differently. The hardness [-]remains to be determined[/-] has been verified/validated - see the results at the end of this post, the WiseCos are through-hardened and precision ground. Atop that, WiseCo is a recognized name in high quality aftermarket engine parts, and actually produce pistons and piston rings for a number of aftermarket BMW engines, even the S54, amongst other bits and pieces.

I know there will be naysayers who say there's no replacement for the OEM valve shims because "BMW Quality", etc, but it's not as if BMW has exactly lived up to their quality standard with respect to the bulk of the valve train anyway, as a simple 'VANOS failure' search will indicate. Though the shims are thought to have no part in that particular catastrophe, it still begs the question that they've made unilaterally good decisions. I digress, back to the topic.

WiseCo produces good parts, and I can find no reason why these shims would fail their reputation or fail to operate as intended in the S54 valvetrain. [-]We're going to test both the WiseCo and OEM shims for hardness to find out what the differences are, but I think we already know where this is headed.[/-] Both non-OEM shims have been tested and confirmed, results below!

For those of you who are thinking, "Why even bother buying a shim kit when you can buy just what you need at a dealership?"

Because 1) I don't care who you are, you won't know exactly which sizes you need before you get started (unless it's Kaiv, Dafoe or a few others... :lolhit:) and 2) Not everyone lives near a dealership.

There will also be others who insist that the wear will destroy the WiseCos, the cam followers, or some other part, fracture the shims, or worse. The shims are not subject to rotational wear, but compressive wear. Since there's only one way to find out if they're going to take the abuse, I'm going to do my full valve adjustment and replace as many as reasonable with the WiseCo shims - eat my own proverbial dog food, just the same as tuning my own car. (it hasn't j4'd yet)

So, I suppose I'm posting this so others can order a set, or sets, and taste the fruits of our experimentation or review for themselves. A valve adjustment and inspection shouldn't be an expensive endeavour, especially considering how important it is to the health and operation of the S54.

I've spoken to an eBay dealer (OEM CycleSupport, +1.888.736.2519, no affiliation) who sells the shims (http://www.ebay.com/itm/231148718657/) for $37.87/kit, plus shipping. Though it says VSK4 7.48mm, he confirmed it is actually a 8.85mm kit with the proper shims. They can also be ordered through a few vendors on Amazon for roughly the same price, which is where we got ours, but they're currently backordered.

And I have winter tires on the car while it's sunny and 55F here. LOL. I guess I've been wishing for snow here for some LSD action. Haha

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B33 01 02 dated February 2008.

SUBJECT
Grinding Noise from the Differential during Slow Cornering

SITUATION
A grinding noise may be heard coming from the differential during slow cornering.
This noise is best heard during tight cornering situations.
For example : while parallel parking, driving in a tight circle, etc.

CORRECTION
If a complaint is verified as described above on the E46 M3; E60 M5; E63 and E64 M6; or on the E90, E92 and E93 M3 vehicles, the differential oil should be replaced with a specially formulated differential oil,
BMW part number 83 22 2 282 583.

With the vehicle at operating temperature
Drive in tight circles (20 circles in each direction), allowing the special oil to coat the locking clutch discs.

The grinding noise will decrease when the locking clutch discs are sufficiently coated. Some slight noises may still be heard after driving in tight circles. Its necessary to drive the vehicle up to 600 miles before all noises are eliminated as stated by the manufacturer.

Note: Vehicles that have had the differential oil converted to this special oil should continue to use this oil whenever a service requiring the differential oil replacement is indicated.

I had this noise when turning slow during acceleration, it sounded like the tires were rubbing the fenders. I ordered the specially formulated differential oil, BMW part number 83 22 2 282 583. The kit from ECSTuning was $150 for three bottles and two drain plugs! Went to an empty parking lot and started doing circles in both directions as stated. At first the noise was still there but slowly went away as I did circles in the lot. After 15 or so it was completely gone!

Also changed the Transmission Oil, Power Steering Fluid, Fuel Filter and Cabin Air Filter. 5 hours of rolling around under the car on concrete equals PAIN! Glad that is done. The car starts a lot easier and runs strong with the new fuel filter.
