Lens Restoration for $5.00 !!

I was kinda bored today and have no mods currently to do on the M3 so I figured "why not do some detailing"! My brake lights have some mild oxidation on the passenger side. So I went thru all my detailing supplies to see what I could try. I had some BlueMagic Metal Polish that works great on chrome and aluminum rims. The package says for use on Plexiglass, Fiberglass and Polyester Varnishes. I decided to give it a try in a small spot on my brake light.

- I used some blue shop towels and a wet paper towel.

- Cut the shop towel in half and use one for the polish and the other to buff off the polish.

- Apply a very small amount and gently rub back and forth in a uniform pattern. When I started rubbing you can hear the rough surface from the oxidation and it quickly goes away as you rub.

- Once it gets quiet and smooth stop and use the other half of the shop towel to buff it off.

I couldn't believe the difference, this stuff actually restored the lenses to like new condition! It removed all of the oxidation and even some of the minor scratches! No additional scratches were found from using this product. I tried it on my headlight lenses which are pitted pretty good after 10 years and it didn't work. I just ordered some replacement lenses.

Yeah, interested in knowing just how much time you spent Gary. Results on the ///M look stunning!

Plastic lenses have a coating on the outer layer that is suppose to aid in UV protection. This coating over the years deteriorates and becomes dull and opaque. Polishing with compounds like Blue magic will effectively remove this coating but leave the lense without this coating. Some kits come with a uv coating applicator but I am not sure if it is necessary. The UV protection may help preventing clear lenses from yellowing at an accelerated rate.

Food for thought. :)

The other day I read you can apply car wax and that protects the plastic. But I never tried myself.

I thought about that when cleaning them and the one reason why I gently rubbed them with very little pressure. My passenger tail light on the trunk was so bad I was just going to replace it so I didn't have much to loose if it didn't work. The others weren't as bad but need cleaned slightly.

My wifes headlights very oxidized and faded so I had nothing to loose there. I was surprised how good they came out! Her 4Runner sits outside 24/7 so that will be the true test especially during the Hot desert summer.

Idea- You could clean them then apply some Expel or Lamin-X film.

I use Nano Wax after every wash and usually do the headlights and taillights. It provides UV protection so I guess I'm covered.

I saw a few different types of black magic on Amazon. I am assuming that the higher the number the smaller the grain. Can anyone confirm this or have any use with other 300 or the 500 paste?

Interesting. The site says that #300 is 3.5 oz and 100 grams, which is obviously contrary to your box. http://bluemagicusa.com/index.php/blue_magic/products/96/blue_magic_metal_polish_cream/ I'm going to order the #300 and give an update when I get it.

I got my blue magic yesterday. It seems to be the same product even though what I ordered was labeled #300. I did a quick try on my side markers, but was trying to beat the rain. I scrubbed it on there and buffed it off. Really I did it quite fast. I did a second time to get best results, but honestly I think all the work was done first pass.
I was really surprised at how clean they got in such a short amount of time scrubbing(30 seconds or less).
Pictures are from the iPhone so not the best.

I can still tell pretty well from the pictures. Everything looks sharp compared to the before picture which is dull and hazy. Did you polish them with the markers on the car or did you remove them first?

hcbeck2689

I did it right on the car. I was careful not to get much on the paint and definitely not to scrub the paint. A little for on there but I just wiped it off after. If you are too worried I would think taping around would be easier than pulling them off

I got mine today and went to work on my side markers. I think it worked well. There is still some yellowish hue left over, but definitely cleaned up the opaque/fuzzyiness of the lenses. Overall not bad, especially for ~$6.

It does look better. If the plastic is faded/burnt from the sun not much will repair that. Use some blue painters tape around the lights to protect the paint.
