My search for a ZHP started 2+ years ago. At first, I noticed some 330i's had nice wheels (OEM style 135). Then I found this site and grabbed all the ZHP info I was missing. My preferences were:

1 - IR or AW sedan
2 - Mostly stock
3 - Local transaction
4 - ZHPMafia seller

All of the above came to reality on Feb-2015 when I found this ad:
http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?15047-2005-BMW-Imola-Red-330ZHP-6sp-137k-miles-%28Austin-TX%29-10-000-OBO

I made an appointment with SoarinZHP for 14-Feb-2015. He showed on time for the test drive, answered all my questions, gave me plenty of time to check the car and had the service records handy. What a great seller and car. I could tell immediately this ZHP was "the one." We agreed on a price and met one week later for delivery. Here are a couple of pics of that day (21-Feb-2015):

Starting today, the ZHP has "daily driver" status. That's because the A/C in the Mini stopped working. I plan to take it to the shop this Friday. Hopefully it's not an expen$ive repair.

Looking good, fredo. Did you do anything special to the black trim strip across the bumper? Mine is a little sun-beaten and I noticed that yours looks better in the "after" picture.

fredo
06-18-2015, 07:41 PM
Benno, I didn't do anything to the bumper trim. Maybe the car was freshly washed. Some years ago, I used with success "Forever Black" on my first e46. Amazing results ! I sold that car 2 years after FB was applied and the trim still looked great.

The ZHP enjoyed DD status for one month. This started when the Mini's A/C stopped working. Now, the Mini is fixed and the ZHP goes back to weekend status.

Oh, and yesterday I stopped at my Indy to say Hello and he saw the ZHP for the first time. He was interested, and asked:

Did you find it locally ?
How many miles ?
When did you buy it ?

He has an AW ZHP, so he knows how non-special these cars are.

I bought a set of silver cube trim today. For some reason my car has wood trim. Per the VIN decoder, black cube trim was installed at the factory.

IMHO, silver trim looks sharp on a black interior !

For what it's worth...I think either is an upgrade over the wood!

1- Windshield fluid leak.

3- Low coolant warning. Actually, the level is good.
4- Rear tires.
5- Car won't start sometimes. It happened to me 3 times in 6 months.

I had this problem last winter when temperatures hit single digits. The electronics wouldn't even come on when the key was turned. An ignition switch cured the issue.

This is what happens to me:

the starter, battery, and lights on dash sound (or look) ok. But the car won't start. After I try 10 times or so, the car starts fine. My Indy said next time it happens to take it there. My AAA card will be handy.

I'm sorry, I have a correction to make. All of my lights did come on when my car wouldn't start. I would turn the key to position 2, all the lights would come on, but when I'd turn the key to start the car, nothing would happen. The starter wouldn't even engage. It would take about 3-5 tries before it would start.

At the same time as the ignition switch, I replaced the fuel pump relay and another relay I can't identify at the suggestion of my friend (he told me what the third one was but I forgot to write it down).

The problem continues even with the new key : two days ago the car wouldn't start. It took 8 attempts before starting. This is the 4th time in 8 months of ownership. I'm not worried about this.

When we had my wife's 2006 330CIc, she would turn the key and would get no crank. after several attempts it would crank. Took it to BMW of Chattanooga to have it checked and they said it was the starter. The quote on the job was $800.00. I guess it is burred and it takes considerable time to change it out.

I took the ZHP to my Indy today for an oil change. First one after 9 months of ownership. He evaluated the service needs and suggested:

1) low pressure power steering hoses
2) expansion tank with hose
3) brake fluid flush

I agreed and he completed the above. In addition he mentioned 2 things that he noticed:

a) differential mount cracking
b) front brakes due in 3 to 6 months

The car has now a clean bill of health, and he said I could drive anywhere in the country. :thumbsup

Fuel pump, first time I think about it. Could be a good suspect.
Starter must be fine, because the battery cranks when the problem shows.

Indy said to take car to his shop next time issue shows, so they can troubleshoot.
Thanks for the ideas !

Thanks, man. Fuel pump is a possible culprit according to the link.

Per PO, the problem started 2+ years. I wonder if that could point to another suspect(s) as well.

Edit: Ignition switch is another possible reason.

Fredo, I changed my pump on my 15 minute break at work when it went out. If you have a new one just go ahead and switch it out. Mine showed no issues on the 50 mile ride to work and when I went to start the car to go get a drink at break it was dead.

This was a good week for the ZHP. This has been replaced:

1. Windshield washer pump and grommet
2. Passenger turn signal (due to condensation)
3. Clear fog lamps
4. A & C pillars

I will post pics of the new fog lamps when weather permits. They look good !

fredo

This is a pic of my old passenger turn signal with the condensation problem. I was surprised to see the amount of water in there since condensation started just recently. BTW, the driver turn signal was replaced 8 months ago due to same problem.

Years ago I needed to change one of the headlamp assemblies in my Ford Tempo, because the light bulbs kept failing due to the water inside.

That's a lot of condensation, I wonder where the seal is broken. When we replaced the headlight unit on my father's 540i due to condensation, it had probably a good cup's worth of water just hanging out in the bottom of the housing.

My ZHP is back to DD status. My 5 y/o son said multiple times "I want to ride on the red car" ... how can I say no ? He knows what's good, that's for sure.

And I found a nail on a front tire. It was at 14 PSI. I topped off with air to 32 PSI, hopefully that will buy me time to fix it on Saturday.

Here are a couple of pics where you can appreciate the benefits of Dr ColorChip.

Stunning results Fredo! I've been thinking about Dr. Color Chip for more than a year. Your results are very reassuring.
Nicely done Fredo!

That looks great. I believe on IR and darker colors, DrC works great! And he's rights, Not bad for a 13 year old Bimmer!

Wow, almost 8 months without an update. I'm not driving the car that much. It will need an oil change soon, based on time rather than miles. On a positive note, I went on a ride last Friday and added 25 miles to the clock. And I'm not spending money on parts at the moment. :roundel

Oil change today with Liqui Moly 10w-60. My Indy recommended that one to help with my oil consumption. I drove 3,130 miles after my previous oil change and didn't need to add any in between. In the past I used 5w40 and needed to add 1 quart every 1,000 miles.

The oil filter housing gasket and vanos hose were replaced recently, that could be another factor. :dunno

The ZHP got little action in the last 6 months while I had the e90 335i. I even cancelled the insurance on the ZHP during that time. Since the e90 sold last week, I did this yesterday:

1) put back ZHP on my insurance policy
2) passed the State Inspection
3) paid the annual car registration

I drove the car to work this morning. Feels good, as usual.

Sold the E90? going back to E46? Good feeling?

fredo
04-11-2019, 06:35 PM
Yes, sir. The E90 had 140k miles on original turbos, water pump, and injectors. Didn't want to risk an expensive repair. I enjoyed those 6 months, the car was very good to me.

Curb rash repair on a front wheel. Check the before and after pics. The technician removed the wheel from the car. Last year I went to a different place and they repaired the curb rash while the wheel was still on the car. Needless to say, I prefer this new place and I'm very happy with the results.

The ZHP passed 150,000 miles today. I was stopped at a red light and had chance to reset the trip odometer. For a moment this was on the dash:

150000 000.0 7:00 AM

That was cool to see !

150k miles update : suspension refresh. I have most of the service recs since day #1 and only these 2 items were previously addressed:

90k miles: control arm bushings
126k miles: rear trailing arm bushings

Mafia member GeorgeH completed the job last week. I didn't have chance to drive a new ZHP back in the day but this must be very close to it. I decided to go with Sachs struts/shocks and find out why these cars got their fame. This is the list of parts :

31312282459 (1) LF strut
31312282460 (1) RF strut
31122341297 (1) LF control arm
31122341828 (1) RF control arm
31126783376 (1) CA bushing kit
31302290313 (2) F bump stop kit
31352241448 (2) Strut mount kit
31331091867 (2) Spring pad, F upper
31331096664 (2) Spring pad, F lower
31356780847 (2) Sway bar end link
33556751269 (2) Sway bar bushing
31106774714 (2) Suspension nut
32216769539 (2) Suspension nut
41114287198 (2) Shock tower reinforcement

33522282461 (2) Rear shock
33502290347 (2) R bump stop kit
33526754096 (2) Rear shock mount
33531136385 (2) Spring pad, R upper
33531094518 (2) Spring pad, R lower

George also replaced engine mounts, steering coupler, and front wheel bearings. I'm very happy with the results ! :thumbup

Thank you, guys. Yes, she drives really nice and feels sporty. I was expecting a stiffer ride, but that’s not the case. The tires already show cupping due to the bad struts/shocks, so I’m planning to buy Michelins on the next Thanksgiving sale.

Very nice! I did the about the same to my wagon earlier this year (except with Konis and Eibach springs), and it was a whole new car afterwards.

I'm sure George did an amazing job, and went above and beyond as always.

I'm glad you're enjoying it! I will also need to grab some new tires for my wagon this year haha.

Alfredo's ZHP is really nice! I had a lot of fun on this project. Usually we are putting aftermarket springs and shocks/struts on these cars, but he wanted to remain "OE." I worked on these cars when they were brand new, but it's been awhile since I have driven one so fresh, it was a really good reminder of why we like these cars.

Mine's the dirty one :p
