Hello guys,

after few word about myself in the presentation topic, i wanted to start a thread about my car, a BMW 320d Touring 2003 having currently 248000km (sorry, i live in Belgium but it should be around 152000miles)
This car is mainly used by my girlfriend as i do have a company car (which is a BMW 320d F30). But this is definitely like "my baby" as i am working a lot it on it and have a lot of projects i would like to achieve.

This is the list of options the car has stock :

http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/217996listeoptions.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=217996listeoptions.jpg)

Maintenance
All the maintenance have been done by BMW dealer so far. No specific things, just regular maintenance with filters and oil done every 30000kms.

The car was quite cheap compare to other models with the same equipment and mileage. It cost me around 3500€ (a bit less than 4000$)
At that price of course, i had to do the normal maintenance but also some other parts had to be changed.
I did :

- Front and rear suspension
- Front control arms
- new front and rear brake
- water infiltration in the trunk fix done (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?16260-Mauro-s-Touring-320d-project-maintenance&p=441326#post441326)
- Right half shaft replacement (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?16260-Mauro-s-Touring-320d-project-maintenance&p=441329#post441329)

It cost me around 800$ with my father's discount.

Modifications
This will certainly be my most active part of the thread, as i really love to work on cars when i have free time. I will step by step put pictures of the things i have done and link the first post to them, but it is so much work that i won't be able to do it directly i think :)

Things i have done so far :

- M wheel with remote installation (done) (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?16260-Mauro-s-Touring-320d-project-maintenance&p=441330#post441330)

- Angel Eyes SMD (done) (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?16260-Mauro-s-Touring-320d-project-maintenance&p=442016#post442016)
- M2 bumper installation (planned near September/October).
- TPMS installation (work in progress, obviously done according to JupiterBMW)

First thing i had to do on this car except the regular maintenance was a water infiltration in the trunk. All the carpets were wet, so i decided to disassemble everything to get a clear view from where the water was entering the car.
As strange as it sound, most of the water was coming from the handle of the trunk. The gasket was damaged and one screw was missing because no clip-on cage nut was present behind. From this handle, the water entered the license plate lights and when it was full of water, it was entering the car wetting also the acoustic foam behind the plastic coverage.

Previous owner probably looked where this infiltration was coming from, and they damaged a lot of plastic parts and the acoustic foam as well.

I repaired the gasket of the handle, test then if it was ok and i saw standing in the trunk while my girlfriend was putting water on the car that still i had a small one from above the handle.
Beleive me or not, it was coming from the BMW logo. This logo have 2 small pins to center it on the trunk. There should be small gasket on these pins, and they were gone.
After repairing that one too, everything was fine and i don't have water inside my car anymore (y).

Here is the pictures of the job :
The damaged gasket :

So much water that the license plate lighter gets rusty :

The missing clip-on cage nut on the right :

Hopefully, my father have a lot of these things in a box :)

No the same as the oem clip-on cage nut, but it should make it :

When i received the car and did some inspection, i realized that the right half shaft was loosing a lot of grease. I cleaned it, tried to change the half shaft boot but nothing to do, the grease was coming out anyway, probably because it was so rusty that the grease was coming out the part itself. The rust was probably coming because an overheat (hand brake blocked or so ?).
That's how was looking the one i replaced :

Since this job is done, my rear wheels are still clean :)

Now that everything was repaired/fix, i finally had the time to do some little modifications :).
I started with the wheel. I already had the remote on it, but it was the squared version, i didn't liked it very much.

Some pictures of the modification :

Good detective work !

:) Thanks Fredo.

I also changed the license plate lights. It is not a big deal, but as they were full of rust, i toke the time to change them for LED models. Result is quite good, it is not too bright and quite similar as the OEM license plate lights from my F30. I will post a picture comparing them tonight, but right now it looks like that :

When i bought the car, the most important option missing for me was the navigation system. So i started to look some guides to understand what an OEM navigation system was able to do on a E46 (as i don't know a lot about that generation, my first company car was an E91 and then the F30).
The possibility of the OEM navigation system was good, but i was a bit disappointed by not having an USB connection possible nor Bluetooth music streaming.
As these are the system my girlfriend and I uses to get music into the car, it was not starting well with the OEM Nav system.

I searched then alternatives, like Dynavin, Eonon, Erisin, ...
Most of these devices have few problems (Eonon), and if they don't, they are quite expensive (Dynavin)...
I was looking to get something really simple for my girlfriend (so exit the Android devices, not good for car usage according to me) and which had a good UI, looking like an OEM device. I finally bought the Eonon D5150Z. Most of the problems seems to be solved, it has a beautiful UI (looks like new OEM I-Drive UI) and have a lot of possibilities :
- music through front USB, Micro SD card, Bluetooth streaming and rear USB cable (optional i will come later on that)
- Bluetooth phone communication with internal microphone or external one
- Navigation software based on Windows CE. I went with Igo Primo and I am quite happy about the quality of that software
- DVD player (don't care about that, but it is in it-
- TNT reception (don't care too)
- Support rear camera (one of my next modification)

Once i got the device, i started the installation. It is quite easy, almost plug and play when you don't come from the OEM Nav system. But when it comes to the rear USB plug, i realized that it was an optional plug on this device and that, of course, wasn't present on mine.
I started to look around how to add this plug as i don't like to have an USB in front, it is quite easy to damage it if you hit your USB stick.

Anyway, i disassembled the unit and soldered directly a plug on the motherboard of the radio. I also did a DIY on another forum, i don't know if we can post a link here ?
I then put this USB plug in the glovebox, perfect place for me quite like the OEM location of newer BMW.

Now some pictures :)

The place where i have putted the GPS antenna, i found that it was the best location so far, as the cable isn't long enough to go to the original place in a Touring (under the top plastic coverage of the trunk as far as i remember) :
http://img15.hostingpics.net/thumbs/mini_491640IMG20150511190222.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=491640IMG20150511190222.jpg)
I get a minimum of 10 satellites lock, so i guess it is a perfect location :).

When i saw this OEM flashlight with charger in the glovebox, i couldn't resist to buy one on Ebay with the charger dock and installed it right away :) It is not really powerful, but it can help in case of.

This is how you start a project thread! Welcome and awesome work.

When you were asking about "gimbal" I think it's "bearing" by the way?

Thanks NoVA ;) I have just looked a bit into your thread, your car is really beautiful, :thumbsup i like it very much. I already did some hours of work on the car indeed, that's why i put couple of posts in the same time, more to show you what i already did...

Regarding "gimbals", i assume the translation isn't good and it is not the bearings (this one i know it without a translation tool :) ). So if i show you that image, what would be the good word for that part.
I unfortunately don't know all the terms in English for mechanical parts :(

Wouldn't it be "cardan shaft" ?

My car didn't come with all the fancy lights on sun visors, footwell lights and roof light with the small additional map reading lights.

The hardest one were the sun visor lights, for which i had to wire the fuse number 6. I did it as most OEM as possible.
First of all, i had to cut the rooflining (not sure about that one :) ), but hopefully some marks were present to know exactly where to cut :

http://img15.hostingpics.net/thumbs/mini_946293IMG20150601153247.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=946293IMG20150601153247.jpg)

For the wires, it is not really complicated, just a fuse bringing the 12volts, lights and in between lights and ground a switch inside the sun visors.

http://img15.hostingpics.net/thumbs/mini_149800Capturede769cran20150601a768232553.png (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=149800Capturede769cran20150601a76823 2553.png)

As i haven't been able to get the original connectors, i had to build some with old computer parts :

http://img15.hostingpics.net/thumbs/mini_569332IMG20150601194816.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=569332IMG20150601194816.jpg)

The car deserves the fuse now :)
http://img15.hostingpics.net/thumbs/mini_704205IMG20150601201554.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=704205IMG20150601201554.jpg)

and this is a good thing done :)
http://img15.hostingpics.net/thumbs/mini_200587IMG20150601181021.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=200587IMG20150601181021.jpg)

About the footwell lights, not really complicated as well. I connected both lights to the X10148 connector on top of the fuse box.

http://img11.hostingpics.net/thumbs/mini_175569IMG20150525144541.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=175569IMG20150525144541.jpg)

Finally the roof light with additional map reading lights. Weird thing about that one is that i had that one at the back but not in the front. In order to get the new roof light working, you need to connect an additional wire to the connector, directly from the plus X10189 on top of the fusebox. Again, not a big deal to do.

And others will have to chime in, but I think they all mean the same thing, driveshaft, axle shaft, cardan shaft.

Thanks for your help.
Seems that a lot of people call it drive shaft, so let's go for that one :).

If you say driveshaft, people will think you're referring to the shaft that connects the transmission to the rear differential (in rear-wheel-drive cars). The pictured part I've most commonly heard referred to as an axle or half shaft.

When I Googled "half shaft", the most common part pictured was the piece you are referring to. If you Google "driveshaft", it'll show the big shaft that connects the tranny to the diff. It sucks when there are so many words for similar things!

I'm loving the progress you're making on this car. All of these mods are subtle, OE improvements that make the car more enjoyable. Good job! :thumbsup

Thanks az3579, i modified my posts with "half shaft", i also confirm that the best results comes from these words on Google :). Yes, as you said, so many words for similar things and it is quite a nightmare for me as for these specific words i have to search the right translation as i don't know them and by time to time, translation tool just screw up the thing ... btw, what do you mean by "OE improvements" ? I don't get the OE part ?

Well, i am indeed not trying in a first step to make the car more beautiful, powerful, put some big wheels or whatever. I am more searching to add few options i like with the goal to get a more "comfortable" car at the end. I know it sounds strange for a 33 years old guy, but i prefer to have a car with a lot of options than a car with big wheels, beautiful bumpers and sport chassis :). But i understand people who does prefer these things and i don't criticize them. That's not the point, it is just that i prefer the options :)

I know it sounds strange for a 33 years old guy, but i prefer to have a car with a lot of options than a car with big wheels, beautiful bumpers and sport chassis :). But i understand people who does prefer these things and i don't criticize them. That's not the point, it is just that i prefer the options :)

I'm with you with regards to options. It's really nice that you started with a car that has a lot of options to begin with. I noticed you have sport seats, automatic climate control, a 6-speed manual, heated seats, rain sensor with auto lights/wipers... these were all options for those cars in Europe so it's good that you didn't have to retrofit so many of these items! That would have greatly added to the cost. It's always best to start with a well optioned car because retrofitting things is a lot of time, effort, and money overall. I'm going to keep an eye on your thread. :)

I was searching for a car with a least Xenon headlights, heated and leather seats, rain sensor and cruise control. The reason is because i did all these things on my previous car and it was a huge amount of work as you say. It was an old Opel Vectra B with the Isuzu engine, and i even retrofit cruise control while this option wasn't existing for that engine :).
So for the new one, i would like to do different things and not start the whole transformation again :-D

Here we are, the last modification i already did on the car, the Angel Eyes.

I did it the best I could and i also mounted a light reduction module, so when the lights are on, the Angle Eyes are lighted at 50% only. I wanted the most OEM installation as possible. To do so, i used an official relay socket from BMW and i used the original fuse location to wire everything. The relay is used to have daylight and fade in/out capabilities. I used the fuse number 4 for the +12V after ignition and the number 39 for the permanent 12V (the number 39 is the phone fuse in theory, but i won't use it for that purpose so ...). As everything is in the car at the fuse box location, i only have 2 wires going in the car, passing to both part of the engine (one through the footwell passenger side and the other one through the DME box). I toke the ground directly behind the headlight as you can see on the picture bellow. I hope you will like this kind of wiring, i am waiting your feedback :).

Relay pre-wired :)

Now i can start to talk about my future project which are the power folding mirrors and the Harman Kardon installation.
I do have a question about the HK additional speakers compare to the normal 6 speakers installation. There should be 2 additional speakers on the front doors and 2 on the rear doors for which i, of course, don't have the hole in the door's panel. I wanted to know if you think that making this hole with appropriate tools won't make any trouble to my door panel ? Anyone already did that retrofit and could let me know ? Thanks in advance.

Honestly I think you're better off going with an aftermarket solution. You can get better sound than the HK if you choose the right components yourself.

Cutting holes in the door panel would make me nervous. See if you can source door panels from a car that had HK.

Ok guys,

thanks for the advices, i started the first step today with the rear doors.
I think the result is quite good, and i must say that i am quite proud of the work i did :-D.

Tomorrow i will wire the rear doors and put back the door panels.

I was quite happy to see after dismounting the first door panel that the speaker location was marked, yeepee :)

Thank you guys :)

So yesterday i finished the wiring of the rear doors and put back the door panels. About the wire, as the one of the rear right door was missing, i decided to adapt the existing harness and add the 2 wires on each side for the speaker on the existing connector.

There is how look the door connector inside :
http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/618282IMG20150701123225.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=618282IMG20150701123225.jpg)

To remove the cover protection, you need to pull a small clip and slide the cover :
http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/437904IMG20150701123356.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=437904IMG20150701123356.jpg)

The 2 wires i need are on position 14 and 15. As you can see on the picture, it looks like an additional part of the main connector. this is because on the connector car side, you have 2 different connector that are tight together when you have the Harman Kardon harness wire installed. I think it is pretty clever, as adding it won't be a big problem inside the car. Just have to replace the existing harness and there are connectors everywhere, no need to solder anything.
http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/418369IMG20150701123433.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=418369IMG20150701123433.jpg)

To remove the pin, you just have to press gently the pin and pull it out of the connector :
http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/385683IMG20150701123502.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=385683IMG20150701123502.jpg)

Now wires and pins out of the connector :)
http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/896743IMG20150701123542.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=896743IMG20150701123542.jpg)

Passing the wires into the existing connector and putting them in position 14 and 15 :

New wires in place. I also took the opportunity to grease the lift window guides :

Hello guys,

i finished the whole installation of the Harman Kardon and power folding mirrors this sunday. It took me the whole day in order to do everything, but the wires, door speakers and so on are working perfectly.

First of all, the little surprise was that the mirrors came without being tapped ²²5 I had to do it by myself :
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/530839IMG20150704170435.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=530839IMG20150704170435.jpg)

Little video of the power folding mirrors in action :

https://youtu.be/LNbaxvn1xok

Some pictures of the Harman Kardon installation in place :
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/777925IMG20150621214002.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=777925IMG20150621214002.jpg)

My tool to cut the door panels was a bit small :
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/775977IMG20150704182600.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=775977IMG20150704182600.jpg)
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/612185IMG20150704184450.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=612185IMG20150704184450.jpg)

So i had to finish it by hand too ²²4
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/714358IMG20150704184501.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=714358IMG20150704184501.jpg)
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/883378IMG20150704185027.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=883378IMG20150704185027.jpg)

Front doors done :
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/841171IMG20150708192404.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=841171IMG20150708192404.jpg)

Conclusion, you were right, it isn't so amazing as it seems to. Everything is definitely better than the "normal" stereo installation, but not that much too... I will have a look on some of your project guys to see what kind of after market installation you used and what are the feedback about them.
i don't regret the installation, at least i do have an amplifier with the complete wires for all the speakers at least one, which is definitely a good thing i believe.

Thank you Vas :).

Now i have something else in mind, i think i am a bit crazy, i should consult a psychologist ...
I have seen this retrofit about the power and memory seat : http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=348165

I must say, i love it and it seems not so difficult to install ... I found on Ebay a complete interior set with power and memory seats 200$, but for a coupe. I wanted to know if the power and rail part of the seats are common in between coupe and sedan/touring ? It seems to be, but i am not sure about it.

Well, i would be glad to do a DIY, but i don't have a lot of pictures and there are different sorts of power folding mirrors, without memory, with memory K-bus and with memory LIN bus (Ribbon model). Mine are without memory with the extra module behind the glove box.
Anyway, i understood the other models, and i can give explanation too that's not the issue but no pictures by myself ...

I have to think how to document the DIY without taking pictures from other forums and so. I will do my best as soon as i have a bit time.

M3 mirrors are also available with power folding option : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu85jLX99J8

Hello guys,

It has been a while that i haven't posted anything new about my car. I don't have much time, as i am working in my house and i have a lot to do in it. Except that, everything is fine, i just passed 155000miles (around 250000km) without any issue and i just did some modification during my free time :).

Reverse camera :

https://youtu.be/FeSofTKE2As

I took the chance to mount a reverse camera as my Eonon device was able to use one. It is really hard on a Touring to pass the wires into the trunk, but i made it:). I toke a reverse camera which take the place of the license plate light. I really like the integration :)
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/926819IMG20150721170407.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=926819IMG20150721170407.jpg)

Next one, i saw that video on Youtube :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIDkzo3G2Rw

and i really liked that small thing, so as i have the parking sensor, i did the modification as it is only one additional wire going from the gong to the cluster instrument :
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/310527IMG20150721093326.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=310527IMG20150721093326.jpg)

Once you wire the gong to the cluster instrument, you have to program with NCS Expert that an alert should gong isntead of buzz (gong vs piezo in NCS Expert)

Next one is the replacement of the gear knob with a M model :

http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/157201IMG20150807101936.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=157201IMG20150807101936.jpg)

The last one is the power seats :) I found a full interior set for coupe for 180€ (around 195$). Of course i am not interested about the seats, but only the power rails which comes with the seats :). So i disassembled completely the seat to switch my manual mechanism with the power one. I also took the opportunity to also mount the lumbar support and the backrest adjustment, which makes my sport seats quite unusual. Better to look the video to get an idea :) I started with the passenger seat to understand how it goes and not block the car..

Awesome work! I'm curious though; why'd you decide to keep the manual lever for adjusting the seat height when the power one you retrofitted does the same exact thing?

Also, do you have any pictures of your seats? That's an interesting upholstery that we don't have here, so I'm curious if the texture is visible when the pic is taken in a way that the whole seat is in the frame. I quite like it!

Thanks az3579 :cheers

Well, the reason is simple, because i don't have the electrical part for that adjustment. There should be an electrical motor to tilt the seat which isn't present in my case, so i took the one from my manual seat to put it on the electrical one. It is a kind of hybrid seat :).
Look the difference in between one having that electrical tilt adjustment and the other without :

http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/278480001.png (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=278480001.png)

http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/389903azeguqe4.png (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=389903azeguqe4.png)

Do you see that some arrow are missing on the black one, because the tilt adjustment isn't present.
And if you look to the seat frame picture bellow, you should see that the mechanism isn't present. Unfortunately, we don't see that one plug isn't connected to any electrical motor, that's the plug for the tilt adjustment when you have it.

I will post some picture of my sport leather seat as soon as possible, it is early morning here, so quite dark to make a picture and i have to go to finish the driver's seat now :)

Interesting! I've never noticed that there were two different adjustment knobs for the electric seats. I always assumed that if it was electric, then it would have ALL of the adjustments available to it. I learned something new today... thanks!

Sorry for the quality of the pictures, but the weather is really crap for the moment, cloudy and raining all the time almost.
Only passenger seat is quite clean, i haven't got the time to do the other seats as well. I really like them, you don't see often that kind of upholstery, even in Europe.
As you can see on the picture, i also finished my driver seat as well. I made some additional pictures, i will show them later. Here it is now time to go to bed :).

Hello guys,

I do have a problem and wanted your advise.
I recently retrofit the power folding memory mirrors on my E46. So i bought the 2 mirrors with 12pins connector, the 2 memory modules that goes in the door panels and the purple switch to replace my initial installation (power folding mirrors without memory with the modules behind the glove box).
I modified the wiring to fit the memory installation, so i have connected the K bus wire to the module with +12V and ground as well. I also connected the pin 8 to the ground for the driver module.
I then activated memory mirrors with NCS expert and modified my FA number.
So far, everything works fine. I can move my mirrors and memory function works pretty well with keys and memory seat switch.
But i have a small problem with the mirror selection switch, it is inverted. So when i put it on the left, my passenger mirror is moving up/down and left/right and if i put the switch on the right, it controls the driver mirror (still without inversion of up/down left/right). It is really strange, i double checked my wires, everything looks good and when i check with INPA the mirrors, if i ask to move the driver mirror, it is correctly the left mirror that goes left/right or up/down.
Only with the switch i do have an inverted command. I don't know where to look anymore to be honnest, if someone have an idea ?

Do you think it would matter if the switch is from a car from the UK? Since they're right hand drive, I figure maybe the wiring is slightly different...

Just after posting my message, i had the same idea in mind. The thing is that it seems to be the same part number on realoem, so i don't know... Perhaps someone from the forum who have these kind of mirrors could check the part number of his mirror switch ?

I'm fairly certain there's only one person that was on this forum that even had folding mirrors, and he doesn't participate on the forum anymore. The car was actually listed for sale a while ago, I just don't know if it sold.
We didn't get power folding mirrors in the United States, unfortunately, so none of our cars have it from the factory.

I don't know in the US, but in Europe, through Ebay i got both mirrors for 260$, the switch at BMW dealer for 60$ and the 2 memory modules (which isn't needed for people who have memory seats because they are already present behind the door panels) on Ebay for roughly 50$.
Don't know if it sounds expensive, but i will sell the old mirrors for a very cheap price, so i can get some money back as well.

Our E46's I think past 2003 or somewhere around there have ribbon cable motors and no door modules, unfortunately, so everything's a lot more expensive. Just a driver's side mirror motor for a non-power-folding mirror is almost $300! One side!

Here's an excellent thread about the various types of mirror motors on E46's:

Indeed, i already know that thread, it is excellent... That's where i took most of the knowledge i have about the mirrors. I am not sure if you couldn't switch from a ribbon model to a 12pins connector model if you add the door modules ... The K-bus also exist on late 2003 E46 after all.

Hello zYx,
you aren't too late, i am still struggling to fix my problem. It seems that you also retrofit your powerfold memory mirrors as the plug isn't the original one ;), so that's perfect :) (by the way, isn't a plug for floppy drive ?). I think i found where the issue is. I bought 2 mirrors for left hand drive, but according to INPA, it seems that they are mirror for right hand drive :

Driver :
http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/315332driver1.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=315332driver1.jpg)
http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/336110driver2.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=336110driver2.jpg)
http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/794861driver3.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=794861driver3.jpg)

Passenger :
http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/765470passenger2.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=765470passenger2.jpg)
http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/760070passenger3.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=760070passenger3.jpg)

As you can see, "Linkslenker" isn't activated (in German it means left hand drive), so i think my problem is there.
But i don't find in NCS the way to code my mirror, it doesn't appear in the ECU list. My seat memory does, so i don't really get why the mirrors don't.
In PA soft (BMW Scanner), i see the possibility to read or write coding values for the mirror, which could help me to modify this value, but it is a HEX file coming out the read procedure, and i don't know which value to change. If you have that software, could you read your mirrors coding values and send them to me so that i would be able to compare them and fix my problem ?
thanks in advance for your help.

Your mirror values may be in the GM5 module when using NCS. That is where my mirror settings are, but I have ribbon-style motors and no door modules, so that may be why mine are in the GM5.

Mine are also in GM5, but only the parameters like comfort closing, heating and tilt on reverse.
Here i need more the settings within the mirrors directly, like left or right hand drive, which are directly stored in the mirror itself and seems not be accessible through NCS but with PA Soft well.

Hello mauro23,

I'm glad that I'm partially helpful with this issue that you are having.
In regards to the switch, my car came from factory with S313A (power fold) and S459A (seat memory) options. Also in ETK, this part number ( http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E46-Coupe/Europe/325Ci-M54/L-N/mar2003/browse/vehicle_electrical_system/various_switches_cigar_lighter/#8373732_2 ) comes up when I input in my VIN, so I think switch is the right one. About the plug, I cannot tell, it might be tampered with before I bought the car.

Now, PA Soft, I have it, but will not be able to use it until the weekend, so please be patient. I'll look up mirrors coding, but in order not to waste time, I kindly ask you to write where in PA Soft I can find this HEX file that you need.

If there is anything else that I can help you with, don't hesitate to ask.

Many many many thanks zYx,

there is what i need in PA soft :

First launch the software and go directly to page 2 :

http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/757848BMWscanner1.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=757848BMWscanner1.jpg)

In page 2, you will find both mirrors modules, the driver and the passenger one. The procedure will be the same for both, so i show it for the driver side. Double click on the module itself to enter it.

http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/711005BMWscanner2.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=711005BMWscanner2.jpg)

There, i need 2 things, first that you read the EEPROM

http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/117002BMWscanner3.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=117002BMWscanner3.jpg)

You should get this :

http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/180805BMWscanner4.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=180805BMWscanner4.jpg)

And then the coding value. You need first to select the coding menu and after that read coding data.

http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/771645BMWscanner5.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=771645BMWscanner5.jpg)

If it succeed, that's what you will get :
http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/800524BMWscanner6.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=800524BMWscanner6.jpg)

Once you did both mirrors, you can go in the folder c:/bmwscan140/bmwscan140.exe/the_current_date_time/ and grab all the files in there, that's what i need.

http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/536626BMWscanner7.jpg (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=536626BMWscanner7.jpg)

Thanks in advance.

hello guys, i do have a question for which i do believe you are the best to give me a reliable answer.

I recently purchased 2 buckles from the states to get the switch for seat belt detection. I know, i am crazy because most of the time people wants to get rid of the annoying warning sound for non fasten seat belts, but i do like security, and i prefer that way, like in my recent F30 that i know if my passenger isn't fasten without having a look to him.
I wired the buckles correctly to the airbag module and coded the airbag module to take in account the buckles. It seems to work pretty fine, i do now have the gong alert and the light on the dashboard when the seat belt of the driver isn't fasten. But nothing for the passenger. I do see if it is fasten or not with my diagnostic tool, no matter if it is BMW Scanner or INPA, my passenger sensor is working as well, but if someone is sitting on the passenger seat, i don't get the light on my dashboard if the person doesn't fast the seat belt. Same for the driver, once he fasten the seat belt, if I unfasten it, the light goes on, but no gong warning, is that normal ?
Thanks for the help, as in Europe we didn't get these buckles with seat belt detection, i don't know what is possible or not on E46.

US vehicles don't detect passenger seat belt connections either. The indicator is only for the driver. It was my understanding that E46's don't monitor the passenger one at all across all models.

As far as alerts go, the only time you get an audible alert is when you start the car. It will beep 8 times at key position 2 if you do not have your driver's seatbelt fastened. After that, it will not beep again until you turn off the car and put it back to position 2 (including starting). The visual indicator will stay there, however.

Thanks for your answer az3579, however i am sure that the seatbelt contact is also present in the passenger buckle, because i can see in PA Soft BMW scanner if the seat belt is fasten or not. So basically it seems that there is no logic of "if the seat occupancy sensor detects someone AND the seat belt isn't fasten, i switch the light on on the dashboard" for the airbag module.

that's a pity, because information are present.
However, thanks for the feedback, i will live with it :).

The E46 platform has a smart safety system that is designed to work together. The reason the contacts are there is to detect whether the seat belt is plugged in, in the event of a collision. If it detects the seat belt is plugged in, it will fire the seat belt pre-tensioner, which is an explosive charge attached to the seatbelt receptacle mechanism, in the event of a collision. If it doesn't detect someone sitting there, I don't believe it fires it. So, it has a purpose, it's just not the purpose you were thinking of. :)

You are right, i was aware of that, but i really hoped that US specifications was also giving the possibility to chime in case of non fasten seat belt for passenger too ... My bad :) But it is at least a good improvement to get it for the driver... Thanks for sharing this with me :thumbsup
