I am pushing 187,000 on my 2004 ZHP and wanted to know if I should have anything done to the valves or VANOS system? I have replaced the cylinder head cover gasket (valve cover gasket) a couple of times, but should I take it to someone to have any periodic maintenance done to the VANOS system?

Does the car feel sluggish at low rpm's, or any sort of stutter at idle, etc?

Here is the link to the Beisan Systems VANOS rebuild procedure. Very important if it has never been done before at that mileage.

You can do a rebuild yourself on the Vanos or go with DR.Vanos.

At your mileage, I would look into it.

Yes. The seals need to be replaced.

No, that car looks and drives like the day I bought it.

What about the valves, should I get them adjusted?

That's an E46 M3/S54 thing. No need to worry about that with the M54.

Do the Vanos. I'm sure you will notice more torques. It's on my to do list also.
