Does anyone know the capacity of the hydraulic fluid that goes in the white expansion tank on the passenger side of the transmission in a SMG equipped car? The Bentley does not state the capacity. Number 1 in the diagram.

1.5 Liters for the M54 (1.7 for the S54). Page 230-2 in the Bentley (it's under Transmission Fluid Service, not the SMG section).

That is for the tranny fluid which is also listed under the (Transmission Fluid Service for SMG) Page 231-2. On page 231-3 it states to fill to the "MAX" on the expansion tank.

This is bringing back memories of law school. Statutes. Ha!

It's probably under a liter.

Well, I've gotten a good education on SMGs, but no quantity, lol. Sorry-- I rarely come up dry on a search, but this one's got me.

If I bought a liter bottle, rest assured it would take around 1.2 liters. I would think a liter would do it, though.

Thanks for your help. I will purchase two liters of Pentosin CHF 11s. That stuff is pricey. $20.95 a liter.

Agreed. I would buy the two to be safe. Should be able to return one if you don't need it.

I'll probably hang on to it since it's used in a bunch of different BMWs and in Minis.

Keep it for the next time the fluid gets changed, definitely.

Sorry I'm not much help on this one - looks like there is a decent DIY on m3forum.net. Guy has some tool tips and shows a pic of two bottles of Pentosin.

Good luck with the fluid change.

The fluid change went pretty well. I ended up not changing out the Pentosin hydraulic fluid due to the fact my cousin was running late and needed to be somewhere right after. I'll end up doing it another day.
