View Full Version : Found Gruppe M replacement filter - Should I buy it?

san

I bought a Gruppe M intake for my zhp about 6 months ago and after I got it, realized that the filter needs to replaced (the seller did significantly reduce the price, ended up paying $60). So I started searching since and finally found the right one (I think) in AUSTRALIA!

Here is the link - http://www.xposed.com.au/k-n-air-filter-rf-3301a.html

Shipping included it costs about $192 USD.

So the question I would like to ask the Mafia is, should I take the plunge?

The filter housing is in OK shape. Thanks!

I called K&N last year with the PN handy and was almost successful in ordering the filter for $25 + shipping. As the rep was getting ready to take my CC info, he noticed that the parts file had a note that said "do not sell to the public".

There's a lot of markup in these, and I think GruppeM is getting most of it....

So did you find any other source to buy the filter from??

I actually sent an email to gruppe m USA twice and heard no response from them. This is the best I could find.

Do they have a warranty? K&N is lifetime, right?

Based on that pic, it looks fine to me, man. Here's mine. I just cleaned and reoiled it so it hasn't been reinstalled yet. Held it up to the light...

Keep in mind, this is a single bulb ceiling light, not the sun as yours was photographed.

You're going to see light through there. If you couldn't, then air wouldn't be able to pass through! Just be sure to properly clean and oil the filter and you shouldn't have any problems. If your isn't physically damaged in any way, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

Yeah, think mine pretty much looks like that too.

That's a great question about a warranty, though. They claim to have a "million mile warranty". But it sounds like they'll just say you didn't comply with the terms. Worth trying, though!

I sent one in and they replaced it. It was on a previous car. I was chastised a bit for cleaning it too frequently. I guess it's supposed to get pretty dang dirty before you do.

Debunking the K&N Myth – Why OEM is Better

For decades, the aftermarket hot rod, racing and tuning communities have relied on oiled-media filters to free up that extra few horsepower. In fact, it’s often one of the FIRST modifications many automotive enthusiasts do to their car. K&N filters (http://redirect.viglink.com/?key=64e3e82ee91e4b50d35eeb0042f67698&u=http%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F1NIEdG6), to their credit, is generally known to be the top name in oiled filters, and they do a great job of building a quality product. However, it’s always important to evaluate the claims and see exactly what you’re getting for your money.

This report shows, with empirical data and sound reasoning, why OEM filters (http://amzn.to/1GZkvPZ) perform better in a variety of areas.

Update: k&n basically said since they make the filters for gruppe m they can't sell it to me and I should contact gruppe m directly if I want a replacement

So il just use the existing filter as BP and Ryan said it looked OK...

Mine was/is destroyed. I had to take it out and swap my stock box back in. Really hope a viable replacement pops up sometime, because $100+ for a filter sucks for the lack of a better term.

If I were a betting man, and I'm not, I highly suspect that there is another filter that K&N makes for another application that is identical to this one. It doesn't make financial sense for K&N to make such a extremely low-volume one-off filter....

You're right, there isn't any other k&n filter that is identical in dimensions at least

I'd be hard pressed to believe it when someone says a K&N filter is "destroyed"... what was wrong with yours?
They're some thick and durable pieces, so I'm wondering what on earth could have happened to destroy one. I'm curious what's wrong with yours!

I'll snap some pics in daylight, but essentially I went to go clean it a couple months back and as I'm cleaning, all the foam/filter is coming off with it. It's basically just the mesh wire now. I did buy it used but I've always been on top of cleaning it. Who knows. I'd love to have back on the car but no way am I putting it on as is and I have a lot better places on the car to put the $100+ towards at the moment.

Holy crap. It must have been run dry as hell by the previous owners or something. I don't know if that'll do it, but that's my guess. :dunno

Finally snapped a pic this morning. There's no filter left! It all washed out when I cleaned it. Must be why I was able to buy it so easily. Glad I was able to catch it though. Just stinks going from the gruppe M sound to stock. Oh well.

Sigh. So strange they won't sell it direct. $200 is a ridiculous price for an air filter, even if it's supposed to last 50k miles between cleanings.

Yup it's quite pricey, but I bought it because I got the intake with a bad filter for $60 and even after paying $200 for the filter alone it ended up being about half the price these intakes go for...

Gotta hand it to Gruppe M for finding a way to keep their intakes making money for them.

$150-200+ for an air filter is just asinine to me. Sucks you guys you can't buy them directly from K&N for a better price. :(
