So i got an ces light today. Code P 0444. Evap emmissions control purge valve open. I have fixed this once by just tightening the gas cap. this time, after they read my code, my car tried to not start....so i think i really do have the valve stuck open. (and the guy at advanced said it smelled like rotton eggs, which is also a sign. My question is, does nayone know if this is a valve that i could take apart and "unstick" or is it a "once it breaks and sticks it is dead valve? Im trying to cook and get litttle man ready for bed, but after that im gonna take this thing apart. Just looking for ideas to get me through the weekend. Any help would be great!

It will require replacement, I believe they are a sealed unit.

Update. I filled my tank with gas (i was at 1/4 tank) and cleaned the crap out of my gas cap and the rim that it seals with. Turned the car on, and the ces light was off. I will keep this updated if it recurs. gotta like the easy fixes.....(fingers crossed)

Win.

I recommend just buy a new cap..unless the gasket/o-ring still looks good.

I just read that they moved the release up to mid-April... you know, right after I saw your sig and panic-typed Droid Bionic into Google cause I thought I missed the release, lol.

Update #2 This Code kicked the Engine light again. I went to BMW and got a new cap for $27! Really! Half the price of the last hose I bought from them! Anyway, no codes since the change. And BTW, they have slightly changed the gas cap design.

Sorry to resurrect this old post, but I am getting the P0444 as well. The PPI didn't catch it, but I was able to read it from my own software. I'll check out the gas cap, and see if it needs tightening or replacing.

I hope it’s an easy/cheap fix for you. I wasn’t that lucky.

Replace the gas cap first. It is not expensive and with how old it is, the rubber around it could be creating a bad seal.

A new gas cap fixed my code.

I was also getting some P0444 codes. I replaced the purge valve and cleared the codes. So far the code has not returned. It's been about two weeks. Driven about 200 miles.

replaced my gas cap, cleared the codes, didnt come back for about 200 miles, then came back for a day and went away. Now it is on permanently, about 400 miles after changing the cap. AND THAT IS SO FUNNY you mention the rotten eggs, because I get a random whiff of that every now and then, and I have been wondering what that is!! I checked the resistance on the current valve and got a minimum of 30.4 ohms; to my knowledge it should be in the mid 20s. I am buying a new purge valve ASAP. Any one know who manufactures the BMW purge valves? Is it Vaico? Febi? Anyone have experience with these brands, or should I just go genuine?

EDIT: Ended up just going genuine. few extra bucks, but peace of mind

installed the new purge valve. waiting to see if the code disappears (it's been 2 days now). I really hope that wasn't a waste of money.

You may need to clear them. Try advance auto.
