Affirm. Max Gear for the diff and Synchromax for the trans.

What do you think about that? Terraphantom (///M3 guy) has mentioned several times that his broke down (oil) after 15k miles. Been debating....as I am approaching (or have passed....I will need to check maint log) that mileage.

Yeah-- I was a little concerned when I made the decision to go with RP over Redline. My plan is to change at 10,000 miles and send to Blackstone. If the reports don't look good, then I'll do a very early change and go to Redline.

My gearbox has been silky smooth since the change, so on performance so far I have no complaints.

Sounds good. I haven't seen or felt any degraded performance either. Good plan Keith. I will follow your plan.

Banged out the brake fluid flush. Used the Motive Power Extractor. Excellent for one-person bleeding.

She's now good to go for the next two years with some ATE Super Blue.

danewilson77
05-15-2011, 01:22 PM
What attachment did you use for the caliper?

kayger12
05-15-2011, 02:10 PM
I had a cheap vacuum bleader from Harbor Freight and cannabalized the attachment from that.

Thought the Motive was supposed to come with one, but mine didn't.

Droid X. Tapatalk. Use it.

danewilson77
05-15-2011, 02:48 PM
I think the specific motive brake bleeder does (I'm sure it does)...our isn't specific for brakes.....so, I am assuming that was why it's not included.

I had the RP in my trans for a while then for no particular reason decided to switch to the Pentosin. It's supposed to be the OEM fluid. Can't say I noticed any difference with either.

Very easy. If I was just doing the pulleys/belts-- I'd say no more than an hour.

Second year of ownership turned out to be much cheaper than the first.

Year three might turn out to be relatively cheap as well with vanos and brake fluid being the only things scheduled.

Year four will get pricey with tires, plugs, the rest of the cooling system, o2 sensors...

kayger12
09-07-2013, 05:41 AM
I'm continuing my segmented cooling system refresh.

I banged out the water pump and thermostat back at 60K (2 years ago). I was going to hold off on the expansion tank for a while, but I was due for a coolant refresh so I decided to do the expansion tank, hoses, and coolant temp sensor.

Went off without a hitch. Expansion tank replacement was much easier than the last time I did this job since I took the whole frame off this time (thanks, DW!). Getting the lower hose off the radiator wasn't THAT terrible this time. Hoses and tank were both original (last time I did this, I had the 325).

Round three will be in about 15k miles (about 2 years when I'm due for another coolant refresh) when I'll bang out the radiator and fan.

That's the plan.

I think I said it when we were in Philly - never selling her.

My kids can sell her right after they put me in a nursing home.

QQ plates are for "historic" vehicles. The first two characters of historic plates are always QQ.

From the MVC site: To be considered a historic vehicle, the vehicle must be at least 25 years old and only used for exhibition and educational purposes by the owner. Historic plates can be purchased for $44.

Changed the oil today. One year to the day since the last change and only put 6,600 miles on her in that time.

Skipped the Blackstone this time since I was advised on the last one to push to 8,500 miles. Clearly that won't be happening any time soon. :)

Figuring on a suspension overhaul around 100K, but that should still be about three years away.

Barring any unforeseen issues before the end of 2014, this will be the least amount of maintenance I've ever had to do in a year of BMW ownership.

This is my whopping grand total for maintenance in 2014:
10/26/14--79,606 Oil and Filter (BMW 5w30)
10/26/14--79,606 Cabin air filter (Mahle)
Coming in December-- Brake fluid flush

Granted, I've only put 4,000 miles on her since last October, but it's nice not to have had to tear into anything for a while.

I was reviewing my maintenance records and remembered that my iron and chrome levels were a little above average when I had the rear diff fluid analyzed after the last change back in '12.

I decided since I was about halfway to the scheduled 30k mile change that I'd change the fluid and get it analyzed again. She's got some fresh Red Line in there and I'll be here anxiously awaiting my Blackstone report.

Welcome. I'm still torn on RP. The trans analysis was really good and the oil was in great shape.

With the diff the oil was still in great shape. Tough to say what was up with the high metals but it was enough to make me change (especially with the other reports out there of high metal wear with RP).

I'm really happy with Red Line in the trans so I'll stick with it.

Hoping this diff sample comes back ok.
