View Full Version : How to set up a BMW Diagnostic Computer doityourself

After getting my computer set up, I've decided to start an ongoing DIY thread on how to set up a few programs for diagnostics and coding our E46. It'll be a brain dump, if you will, while the information is still fresh on my mind. In attempt to reduce the amount of hotlinking to other forums or images, I'll try to cover everything regarding installation within this thread. Please do not quote any of the images or steps, as this is an ongoing DIY.
As far as general use of the software, DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Spencer. Thanks for the wealth of information. Excellant writeup. I may even take this on someday.

OMG thank you for starting this!
:praise
I fully plan to do this as soon as I get a cable; I was dreading the amount of searching & forum reading I was going to have to do to get it all working.

Thank you Spencer, I fiddled around with it a couple weeks ago but failed to get it completely working - hopefully by following these instructions I can get it to work right!

Wow. This is exactly what I was going to do and didn't have enough time to complete.
Thanks for saving me allllll that time writing it up and trying to get it to work... will give it a go when I come back from vaca!

Cable won't get here till 3/30, starting to install XP on Boot Camp now.. this goes against every fanboy fiber in my body... :(

UPDATE, the Early 2001 MacBook Pro QC does not support Win XP, only 7... Will buy a license and try it on.

Yes, 2011. Apple removed support for XP.. Dunno why, i I had to guess, I would say security or Hardware compatibility. I think Intel also dropped support for XP on all Sandy Bridge lineup

XP is a ten-year-old OS. That probably had something to do with it.

So, after talking to a few buddies from Intel and MSI, it appears that Microsoft is not supporting XP on new hardware platforms, that has something to do with the new embedded OS direction that their company will be taking soon. XP would be cannibalizing that effort..

"Windows 7 (non-64bit) should work as well." That sux, which software won't take 64?

Thinking about getting a machine just for this project, first because I don't think having the MBP on the engine bay surrounded by grease monkeys(like me) it's the best idea ever(I could fix that with a $50 shell, but that + $100 for Win7 OEM it's already half the price of a dedicated computer..), and second because I found some descent spec Core Duo and Core 2 Duo laptops and even a Tablet PC running XP Pro 32bit for under $300.

Another reason is that if I can successfully have a fully loaded computer for diag/tweak/tune, it'll be easy to share, ship it around, image the HD for others to use, etc...

There is a method for getting it working on Windows 7 64-bit, I believe. It would be INPA that otherwise doesn't support 64-bit. It doesn't launch on my ThinkPad (64-bit OS) but it works fine on my D430, which is my dedicated test bed.

so the D430 is a rock solid platform for all the software? I found a few cheap on CL

so the D430 is a rock solid platform for all the software? I found a few cheap on CL

There is a small hurdle with this device; it uses a 1.8" hard drive with a proprietary hdd connector, so I can only use the hdd's it was sold with 60, 80, 100gb, and they are VERY pricey. I do like the machine's weight (very light) and battery life. Well built and it has a trackpoint, which is a MUST for me.
The hardware is more than capable of running the software for this though; no performance issues on my end.

If I had to do it again, though, I would go with a thinkpad x series that uses a 2.5" drive.

I'm running SSS_progman and DIS/GT1 along with INPA, NCSexpert and WinKFP on a D630 with 2GB of RAM with no issues.

I'll Post up a PDF on how to get DIS/GT1 running. The info is out there but there were a few issues I encountered that I had to deal with myself.

There is also a ready made VMware available for SSS_progman here http://www.4shared.com/dir/IzzqCIkM/BMW_Tools.html (V32 ready made progman) after opening the VMK Disk file on VMWARE desktop and running the VM.

You would start at step

"Now restart the VM. Start -> Shutdown -> Restart
While the VM is restarting, open IFHSrv32.exe on your computer from C:\EDIABAS\Bin
Make sure your firewall/antivirus is disabled!
Progman will finally come up!
Now lets set up the cable to communicate with Progman. Click on the Administration button."

on Spencers guide after starting the VM once and clicking the choose interface Icon, selecting your interface on the desktop, rebooting and modifying file E:\xpe_service\progman.xml by changing the following line.

Code:

<Brand bmw="true" mini="true" rr="true"/>

to

Code:

<Brand bmw="true" mini="false" rr="false"/>

and then continue Spencer's guide.

CONFIGURING EDIABAS.BIN

From

;-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
; RemoteHost
; Description : server address/name
; Default =

;-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
; Port
; Description : IP communication port
; Value : 1000 < port < 30000
; Default =

Also, if you're running it on windows XP it is also advised to do the following

go to C:\EDIABAS\BIN\ediabas.ini look for the segment below

;-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
; LoadWin32
; Description : Map EDIABAS Win16 calls to EDIABAS Win32
; Value : 0 = Win16/32 Mapping disabled (Win16-->Win16)
; 1 = Win16/32 Mapping enabled (Win16-->Win32)
; Default = 0 for Windows 9x/Me
; Default = 1 for Windows NT4/2000/XP
; LoadWin32 = 0

and make it look like this

^^ Just FYI, if you download that VM hard disk image, it will not work with VMWare 6.0. Works fine on 7.0. I do not know if 6.5 will work, but I can tell you that if you have an older version, you must upgrade, otherwise it won't run the VM.

Now I'm going to find out if this pre-made image works. I built my own using the instructions on Page 1 and I could not get Progman to detect my car, even though INPA detects if just fine.

EDIT:

Still cannot get Progman to initialize the interface. I dunno WTF is going on with this thing... it doesn't work with my setup, nor does it work with the pre-loaded Progman disc image.

does that mean this can activate alarms/program comfort options like roll up windows with fob key and if so, wanna extend the tut? :) if we were in kindergarden you'd definitely got a gold star for this, either that or allowed to go into 5th grade directly >.>

You want to make doubly certain you have the correct settings within the virtual network editor

All directions followed to the letter, with the exception of VMWare version. I upgraded it to 7 to try the image in the post further up this page. All settings are the same though.

There isn't anything to EDIABAS; that's the communication link between the software and the car. Make sure INPA works, then see if you can get NCS expert and SSS Progman working.

INPA is working, I got it to read the car's VIN, send test signals to different sensors, etc.. downloading GT1/DIS now, but since I don't use paypal, it'll takem a while to get the parts from 4share.. oh well, free is free... :D

My main goal is to be able to:

1- tune the car, I'll be looking for guides on how do do a shark-like mod;
2- be able to turn on/off features, like windows up using remote key, disable airbag sensor for passenger, use LED tails, etc...
3- play with it.

If you guys know a "what can you do with all this" kinda post, please link. I'll start writing one once I get it all working

Nice work putting this together! Thank you Spencers. I think with the help of my more tech savvy younger brother I might be able to do this.

I have a 5 or 6 year old Toshiba laptop with XP Home and a 60gb HD and 1.5gb of ram. I just did some cleaning up and went from 18 to 34gb of free space. I assume that's still not going to do the job?

Thanks again.....Barry

It should work. The EDIABAS/INPA install doesn't take up much space. Keep in mind that you need to get that working before proceeding to the VM-based installs. My GT1 VM is almost 4gb and my Progman VM is 16gb.

Good to hear! I should be able to clear up some more HD space too, didn't want to keep deleting things if it wasn't going to work anyway. Did you buy the programs on Ebay or just find them for download on the internet?

It's immediate. I've done the same thing and once it's ordered, it takes effect on your account. Log out and log back in. You can download up to ~2GB at a time, so select 10 or so of the "part" files and click download. Then while that downloads, you can then select another 10 and download, until you've clicked all. Then they'll all simultaneously download.

And the news is...

PROGMAN AND DIS NOW WORK!
My simple mistake was turning off the firewall. I never have to mess with it which is why it escaped my mind. Just programmed my door locks to lock after x mph. :biggrin

Now the question is, would it be possible to allow Progman to program while the car is running? I don't want the battery to get too low while programming and I don't have a charger. Even if I did, I'd have nowhere to plug it into as the car is far from an outlet...

I've tried logging out and back in many times, still not allowing more than one at a time and also having to wait for that annoying timer to run down first.

You shouldn't need an account. The trick is to create an account, download their 4shared downloader program, and copy the files from my share to yours. Then you'll be able to download simultaneously within the program. For free.

While you program what? You're pretty safe enabling/disabling things within Progman while the car is on battery.
If you mean updating the DME, you cannot do it with the car running. And I highly recommend using a manual battery charger or power supply while doing so. The MS45.0 in the ZHP is already finicky enough. You don't want to fry your car's computer.

Ok, I'll try that. Thanks guys.

I only meant during Progman. I wouldn't try updating a DME without constant power.

Also, spencers,
I'd like to make a correction to your document.

On the section for configuring DIS/GT1, where you have to log in to root to change some settings:

At the login prompt type root
Choose option 1 to choose a password. For the easiest to remember, I recommend: password
A few lines of text will be generated, the last being TERM = (scoansi) _
Hit the enter key.
Type: cd /etc
Press enter
Type: vi hosts
Use the arrow key to move the cursor down to the entry 127.0.0.1 localhost
Press the "o" key to add an empty line below it.
Now, without any typing mistakes, add 192.168.68.1 diaghead diaghead
Keystrokes should be: 192.168.68.1(TAB)diaghead(SPACE)diaghead
Press ESC
Type: :wq
Now type: init 0

Once you type in "192.168.68.1 diaghead diaghead", the following section is incorrect. Pressing ESC and then typing wq does nothing other than emit annoying beeps. I believe the correct process is, once you are done typing, press Shift+q and then type in "wq" next to the colon at the bottom. That will then produce the # next to which you type in "init 0".

I sat there for a good couple of minutes trying to figure out how to proceed and save the changes. :)

I figured out why I wasn't able to get their upgraded service to work yesterday after paying for 1 month......rather than upgrading the free account I had already created and was signed in under, when I Paypal'd them they created a different account using my Paypal user e mail.

I finally got them all done yesterday by just downloading 5 at a time in separate windows. Thanks alot for hosting these Spencers. My cable should be here Thursday. Might have to give it a try next weekend.

thanks to an anonymous member, i was able to use his 4shared acc and get the files spencer posted. on that note, the 4shared downloader sucks balls. I suggest using jdownloader, adding the 4shared premium account if you have one and then adding all of the file links to jdownloader. since I already did it, here are all the direct link to the files so you can que them up in the download manager of your choice or what not. Thanks again spencer.

first two that I have, easiest way to check if your OBD2 cable is working through INPA(_.IPO) is to follow www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ufpcqyie8q and do some of the things he did, got sorta lost once i got there.

secondly, adding a few steps when making virtual machine, i just resorted to reading bimmerforums lol
edit: still trying to figure out vmware. not getting the same options for install new even though i dled your version

nothing is going right -_-... got everyting up to api test, connected the cable to car and tried to diag and says that theres no connection to diagnostic head..

Bought the Mafia Terminal today,, Toshiba R500, 12" Centrino(Duo I think), 2GB RAM, BT, Firewire, all USB ports we need, slapped a Corsair 128GB SSD on it, installing Win 7 right now. The machine is very fast and ultra portable. Perfect size for shipping around, and the SSD can mostly insure data integrity!

Hi there,

first of all I want to thank you for these nice tutorials! I did not get the stuff from here, but installed it successfully. But my setup differs a bit from the standard machines:

I installed VMware and actually there are 3 VM's running:
VM1 - Windows XP 32 bit for working with INPA and NCSExpert
VM2 - Progman v32
VM3 - DIS/GT1 v44

I did the connection APITEST and it was successfull. But i don't know, what IP adresses to enter exactely.
In Windows XP (VM1), I set IP adress to 192.168.68.5. This is the windows IP.
I entered this IP under C:\EDIABAS\BIN\ediabas.ini under RemoteHost.
Then I changed it under DIS/GT1 (VM3) in EASY-DIS CONFIGURE-MATIC (1 Configre EDIABAS - 3 configure IP adress - entered y - entered 192.168.68.5. Then i did the APITEST and it is successfully). I even changed it in the 'vi hosts' entry

In progman v32 (VM2) i have several Interfaces displayed. I added a new interface with the ip adress 192.168.68.5, but i can't connect to it :(

Am I making a major mistake? Thanks a lot in advance!

Spencers,
I've done some testing and gotten the suite to work inside of a VM. I have Windows 7 x64, so it would make it difficult to run everything, so I just set up a VM with 7 x86 and installed the usual suite on it (INPA, EDIABAS, NCS, WINKFP, etc.). Everything on it works, so I could proceed to make the other two VMs with SSS Progman and GT1. Please let me know if you'd like the instructions; I'm re-typing the instructions for my personal use as a failsafe backup in case this site ever goes down or whatever, sort of like a certification manual. If you'd like, I can create a section on getting it to work inside of a VM. There aren't many steps to do that, just a few odds and ends like getting the cable to be detected and the like.

I'm also going to write instructions on how to use NCS Expert, because I had a helluva time finding out where the instructions were for it. The instructions were right in front of my face, but it wasn't at all obvious that those were instructions on using it, so if you'd like I can send you that as well.

Absolutely does, though INPA doesn't work with x64 (64-bit). If you have Windows 7 x64 installed, you could create a virtual machine like I just mentioned with a 32-bit version installed and make it work through that.

az3579
05-16-2011, 04:30 PM
Definitely! Maybe it would work for Mac OSX users as well. How is the speed?
I personally don't mind booting into WinXP (BootCamp) to access INPA, et. al, but I can see this being very helpful to x64 users!

I'm sure it would work for Maccers as well, as long as VMWare Fusion has the ability to mount USB Controllers for the VMs (I don't remember; sold my Mac in '09). I'm doing the writeup on that tonight, and should work regardless of what OS you have installed as long as you're using VMWare. I do not know if it works on other Virtual Machine software packages; that's something I'll have to test. If it would work in VirtualBox, that would be a pure win; VB is free software (open source).

As for WinKFP and NCSExpert, I'm still debating whether to do DIY's on those programs. They're much more heavily involved in terms of use and installation. Quite frankly, I don't remember my process of installing those, nor do I want to re-install them to find out. ;)

I was going to do one for NCS. If you do one for WinKFP, call it even? :)

Ok, Spence, need some help:

I'm at the point of configuring the GT1 installation, where you say to press CTRL+SysRq to access the command line. For me, pressing SysRq with or without any modifier key — CTRL included — brings up a small black box with "To exit, press <Enter>. To cancel, press any other key."

What am I missing? (I'm using VMWare Workstation v6.5.2 build 156735, EasyDIS-base-44-v1.0, & GT1_v44_programs.)

EDIT: Nevermind, I found out that "SysRq" on a UNIX keyboard is sometimes mapped to "PrtScrn" on PC keyboards; Ctrl+PrtScrn brought up the CLI.

That was where I was at yesterday, too. The missing key (for me, anyway) was the BMW Diagnostic Head Emulator (search the 'nets for "diagheadinstall.rar"). After installing that, run the IFH Server, the Diagnostic Head Emulator, & fire up the GT1 VM. I still haven't nailed down what order of connecting the cable & turning on the ignition won't give me errors, but I have gotten it to work more than once!

I would think so; they say in that thread that you could perform it using this software. I personally don't know how to do it yet, though. I've been trying to figure out how to access the VANOS test & have so far come up with nothing; most of the people on other forums who have posted screenshots of it & guides to get to it have been on other cars (5'rs, M3s, etc.) & our (or at least my) DME options haven't lined up with what "should be" there. All I've been able to do so far is have it electronically check the fault codes of the VANOS solenoids & intake/exhaust valves; no functional test yet.

OK....thanks. I figured this would be a valuable asset as guys are always asking if their VANOS needs overhauled. It would have to be able to detect some leak by of the VANOS pistons....if I am thinking about it right.....and timing is probably an input.

Spencers,

I recently re-installed INPA on my netbook and I was able to skip a couple steps. I can't recall what obdsetup.exe does, but I didn't run it this time. Do you know what that is for? Also, the path variable set itself somehow when I installed the first INPA version. I actually think I have 2 versions of INPA installs, one is an upgrade. I remember having problems the first time because I didn't set the path variable, but this time I went to set it after installing, but before using, and it was already there (fresh install of windows, not a remainder from previous install). This time, installing INPA and making it work only took about 15 minutes. This was on win 7 ultimate.

obdsetup is just an automatic script to set a few settings you can access by going to your device manager going into the properties of COM1 and setting those properties yourself.

Dis will allow you to run diagnostics tests. Progman only allows you to recode and update your DME/EGS.

I run DIS for diagnostics along side INPA for quick lookups and use WINKFP and NCSexpert for my updating and recoding needs.

I've used progman but was never a fan of it when NCSexpert and WINKFP accomplish the same thing much faster and have more kick behind them.

DIS V47 allowed you to recode your modules and update your DME/EGS; when V57 came out it lost that functionality and thats when Progmann came in and took over that task.

I must be blind or having a technical problem--but where's the actual information? All I can find is replies saying how useful it is? Thanks! :?

I don't know what his reasons were but right now we have 9 pages of technical problems and solutions that, if he did re-edit and post up the DIY, undoubtedly would make use of the input of others making the nine pages completely irrelevant.

I would like to build my own diagnostic computer but my laptop is prone to spontaneous reboots and I simply don't use it enough to justify buying a new one. If someone has an old laptop they aren't using and want to donate it I'll gladly chronicle my efforts into a DIY. The minimum requirements are quite basic so I'm sure somebody has an old laptop they no longer use.

I have the computer know how to tackle this but my laptop is on it's last leg and even if I decide to replace it, the software and drivers require a 32bit OS. So unless someone has a laptop to donate to the cause someone else is going to have to tackle this DIY.

Yes, both are code-able.
And since you're in NJ, a meet could be arranged to program said features. If you want, of course. :)

what's the line for corner delete? I've been hunting and hunting and cannot find a reference anywhere. I found both of the ones you mentioned, along with DRL, DRL dimming, etc.....but can't track corner delete.

only one remotely related i've found is corner light output,

Most of the "SL" settings are for the European parking lights (aka city lights). Those pins aren't occupied on US cars

Any insight into what features are available for city lights? I'm getting mine installed on Saturday and if the options entertain me, then I'd consider doing the pinned LCM route. (I made the decision to hook them in via AE harness, but I would consider doing it the proper way)

DRL Dimming? what are the level choices BP?

zj96sc
01-27-2012, 07:42 PM
from what I understand, there are percentage options, i think they are:

FL_DIMMUNG_ALS_DRL :wert_01 = 0 % wert_02 = 18,82 % wert_03 = 20,39 % wert_04 = 43,92 %wert_05 = 18,82 %

this dims the flash to pass lights to those percentages, provided:

GED_FL_ALS_DRL is "aktiv"

however it may be this line instead of the FL_DIMMUNG line....

DRL_DIMMUNG wert01/2/3, with 1-3 corresponding to 18, 20, 43%.

not 100% on this, still learning.

If i could get the flash to pass inners lit up at 18% or so i'd forgo the city light retrofit. same net effect.

if SL is city lights, then the main one i found for city lights is the one i posted above.

I haven't really played around with it too much. I believe you can set them to function as DRLs, and if coded properly they'll replace the corners for the parallel parking feature (you know, the one where you set the turn signal left or right with the car off). If you're retrofitting city lights, it'd probably be easiest to change your FA to a Euro model's (*EV53 -> *EV51) and recode the LCM to the new defaults. Doing so would also enable rear foglights for facelift sedans (assuming you have a rear fog LCM faceplate)

As far as wiring goes, it's probably easier to use the LCM pins than it is to use an AE harness. +12v for the right side comes from pin 45, and for the left it comes from pin 46 (double check those pins in the WDS, I may be slightly off). You can grab a ground from anything convenient in the front.

SL = "standlicht" which is basically what they call parking lights in German. SL_V = Standlicht Vorne (Parking lights front), or city lights. Sometimes they're listed a little differently (STANDLICHT_V; SL_VO, etc...). I know there's more than one line concerning them. I don't remember the line to enable them off the top of my head. I find it easier and more convenient to just code to the Euro defaults (you shouldn't get any bulb out warnings if you actually have the city lights installed)

zj96sc
01-28-2012, 07:23 AM
How do you code straight to the euro defaults? Does this trigger any bulb out warnings beyond the city lights (rear fogs possibly?) Does this also include the fog on with hibeam coding automatically (rather than coding it with the NSW GLIECHZ lines)

Also, do you know if the

FL_UND_NSW_NICHT_GLEICHZ to "nicht_aktiv" will also keep the fogs on with flash to pass (stalk backward in addition to stalk fwd)?

A few days ago i found a very passing reference to

NL_UND_NSW_NICHT_GLEICHZ to "nicht_aktiv" as the line to keep fogs on with flash to pass, but i cannot for the life of me find that thread again, nor have i seen it in anyone's posted FSW_PSW

Thanks for your help!

Yes, that first line you mentioned should effect both flash to pass and highbeams. Newer cars like the e90 differentiate between highbeam and flash to pass (as FL and LH respectively). The euro code will allow fogs and highs natively (if you read out the fsw_psw, you'll find that the nicht gleichz line is already disabled by default when coded as a euro module)

You can do the euro recoding with NCS. That bimmerfest post was from when I wasn't quite as familiar with NCS Expert's capabilities. In your FA, replace *EV53 with *EV51. Then recode your ALSZ module with a blank fsw_psw.man

If I remember correctly, the city lights depend on multiple lines. That's one of them, but there are more iirc. It's been a while since I played around with this, so I'm not 100% sure.

Wow...really? So recoding with a blank fsw_psw then "resets" the ALSZ to defaults for the FA specified? like for example, if you left it as EV53 and uploaded a blank fsw_psw, you'd wind up with all default US settings?

i did find out today that my car has the 'follow me home' or 'home lights' or whatever set up with my low beams. not really a fan since it cycles the xenons, but just an example of a feature already activated that i did not know the car had.

Couple more questions on this one if you have a moment....again, thanks for your help so far.

So I was reading through your "how to change the region" post on bf.c, and did the real OEM USA-> Europe trick for my VIN last 7, currently I am the USA EV53, but if i go to eur_lhd, I end up with ET55. but using this info from a post of yours:

Stock is EV53.
EV = facelift E46 sedan with the M54 series engine.
5 = M54B30 (3 = M54B25, 1=M54B22; these numbers will be different for different engines).
3 = USA/Canada. 2=RHD Euro. 1 = LHD Euro.

that obviously comes out to EV51. what am i doing wrong?

I also wanted to clarify the actual process (these steps i've got here are based on the ncs changing VO pdf)...

1 - load ncs expert in expertmode (need mode WITHOUT fsw_psw manipulation, yes?)
2 - F2 select chassis (..e46)
3 - F6 back
4 - F1 VIN/ZCS/FA
5 - F2 Enter FA
6 - pick e46
7 - confirm VIN
8 - this is where i get lost. the PDF goes into $### option selection. is there an option on this list called "*EV53" ? that I then revise to "*EV51" ?
9 - F6 back
10 - F4 process ECU (2nd place I get lost. do i pick ALSZ here? or do i need to update the FA in other modules first?)
11 - F2 Change job
12 - select FA_write
13 - F3 execute

3rd place i get lost - where does the blank FSW_PSW.MAN we discussed above play into these steps? how does my FSW_PSW even matter if i'm in a profile without manipulation?

then again, looking over most of your old posts, this seems to be the process prior to recoding the LSZ with SSS. i'm confusing the hell out of myself!

I hate when guys ask to be spoon fed with this ncs expert stuff but ...here i am doing that. this region change process is still a little beyond me. Thanks again man!

reedit: also, do you still have your LSZ comparison spreadsheet? the link from bf.c that you posted up on 6/3/10 is no longer active.

terraphantm
01-29-2012, 07:13 PM
Either ET55 or EV51 would work - they were both used in European cars (over here EV53 and ET57 were used). I don't know if there are any differences, but I figured EV51 is "closer", which is why I typically recommend using that code.

If you use a profile without manipulation, you don't have to do anything with the fsw_psw. Most people didn't understand what I meant by "a profile without manipulation", so I just started saying to use a blank fsw_psw. Both methods get the same job done.

That LSZ comparison worksheet.. I'll have to look. I've wiped my harddrive a few times since that post as I don't know if I ever backed it up. That server I hosted it on is long gone

zj96sc
01-29-2012, 07:19 PM
ahh cool.

if you can't find it no big deal. figured it would be pretty educational for me.

so based on further reading i understand now that a blank .man file resets to defaults only as a result of a failsafe within NCS, but still works. I guess I'll try with expertmode since its the "right" way to go about it.

Been doing a lot more reading and I think I understand the FA change process to be as follows:

load expertmode
read FA from ALSZ, via VIN/ZCS/FA, then ZCS/FA f. ECU (E46, ALSZ)
Enter FA (*EV53->*EV51, presumably by deleting *EV53 and adding *EV51?)
Back
Process ECU with job = sg_codieren (ensure ALSZ)
Execute job

..is that pretty close?

as an aside, i'm elbow deep in several VO change threads on bmwcoding, and i come across posts and think "man, this particular guy knows his shit"....look over at the username, and it's you. every time.

terraphantm
01-29-2012, 09:01 PM
That's pretty close. One step you should add is doing the job "FA_WRITE" on the ALSZ and AKMB if you want to permanently store the new VO to the car's memory

zj96sc
01-30-2012, 05:33 AM
what's the reason to do that? presumably, the next time i were to code my FA would have reverted to EV53, thereby re-coding the ALSZ back to US defaults if i used a blank FSW_PSW, or was in a non-manip profile...?

Depends on personal preference really. If you want to to always default to the European settings, store it permanently. If you want it to default to US settings, then don't store it permanently.

Botond and I did some coding this weekend. He was able to get Triple Blink to work in my car! Yes I have a 2003....having it now, it's an awesome feature.

The LSZ aka LCM (Lighting Control Module) must be revision 36. Must be for a 2006 model year. This will usually come with Auto headlights.

I don't have Automatic headlights in my car, so I switched my old faceplate back to the new LSZ. (The faceplate is separate from the actual Module).

(If you add an LSZ with the Auto feature to a car without the Rain/light sensor, it just defaults to on/off with ignition).

I bought a new LSZ on Ebay...we didn't try with a used one, so that's unexplored territory.

Got a tamper dot at first, but once coded with my VIN, it worked fine.

Hands-down, one of my favorite mods so far :)

I agree with everyone that this was a complete douche move on spencer's part for putting something with tons of potential for everyone and then yank it out without saying why he did this.... shame :facepalm

For those who disagree with what I have done, I did this on principle. Yes, spencers put out this thread in good faith - at the beginning. It was very detailed and helpful, which is why I copied them for later reference. It seems that it was a good thing I did this because later on spencers decided to completely delete all of his work from this thread without explaining to everyone (Marcus, Dane, or Keith) why he did so. Obviously, this is his choice but totally a douche move on his part...

A lot of people have been asking for help regarding setting up their computers to do what a few already know how to. I, personally, do not agree with people keeping knowledge to themselves rather than helping out fellow forum members. What I have seen here on this forum, and in person, is what I have been looking for... fellow forum members helping each other out like you would for your own family. Because of this, I decided to locate the files I had backed up and provide them back to the family...

@spencers... you did awesome work here and showed lots of potential to be a valuable member to the "family". I'm in no way taking away your knowledge but when you put out your info on the forum it became part of the Mafia. Deleting all of your work w/o explaining to Marcus, Dane, or Keith is inexcusable. Quality work of this calibre should never be taken away like that. Perhaps you have some things to think about. I wish the best for you and hope you will find a forum you will fit in with....best of luck :thumbsup

I'm still looking to get the DIS/SSS setup still. So far only EDIAPIS and INPA and NCSexpert work for me. Havent gotten to the point where the GT1 can communicate with the usb cable yet.
