I saw one for a bike recent recently. But a car?!

I saw a good CL ad yesterday, but it's gone already.

2012 BMW 328i with 53,000 miles for $9,900. Brand new engine last year (10,000 miles ago). The reason: car was in a flood. I was interested, and even bought a Carfax for it.

Oh, well. The chase for a 3rd car that I don't need continues. :)

Yes, the ad said something like "engine sucked water thru the intake" ... but don't quote me on that.

Looks like the F30 prices are coming to my comfort zone. The Ford dealer has this one:

2012 328i , sedan , jet black on black , AT , comfort access , 74k miles , $12,500

My dad bought 2 used cars there, so I know they don't sell junk. For some reason my iPad crashes when I try to post the link. :dunno

That does suck. I'm amazed at how easy cashier's checks are to fake. I've seen some real ones that look so generic they could have been printed at home. There has to be a safer way to transact large amounts.

I saw a CL ad for an M3 a few months ago with a condition that seemed pretty solid.

"No one but me drives the car until I have cash in my hand. Alternatively, we can go to your bank and you can withdraw the money from a teller in front of me." Paraphrased, but that was the general idea.

I bought one of my cars in a private party transaction some time ago, and advised the seller I was paying in cash. He arrived with one of those markers you use to find out fake bills. I don't think he checked every bill (I paid only with $100 bills) but at least he checked some.

Smart guy !

Well, the $12,500 price was a typo. The very same car goes today for $16,900. I wonder if someone was ready to buy at $12,500 and the dealer didn't honor that price. :mob

This ad got my attention. Check it out.

https://austin.craigslist.org/cto/d/1999-bmw-323i/6457385949.html

Edit: copied the ad here.

This is an exceptionally well maintained vehicle for the interested buyer. It was owned by the principal of an elementry school in kyle, texas before coming into our possession. It runs and drives flawlessly, with a strong clutch, crisp gear box, powerful 6 cylinder engine and silent rear-end. This vehicle has years of potential life left to live, that is if the future owner chooses to drive it wisely and continue the recommended service schedule this car is accustomed to. Its not without any issues as all things mechanical in nature tend to wear out from use, over use and no use at all. The main cause for complaint in this vehicle is without question: the door window regulators and their limited and non functionality, depending on which window is in question. The Front two window regulators will travel about a 1/4 of the way down their tracks then back up again slowly. you can hear the cable Drive straining on its pulleys during this time. This is typically the way this variety of window regulator fails stretched or broken cables. The passengers rear window regulator has failed all together and if left unattended May recede into the door due to gravity alone. Aside from that the AC blows cold the heater is hot. There are no warning lights of any kind illuminated on the dash during any length of Drive. The car starts reliably morning noon and night. The tires have at least 80% tread at all Four Corners. There's a bare minimum of oil seepage from the engine. hardly noticeable without a trained eye if you care to look. The vehicle leaks no antifreeze and has none of the Hallmarks of having been abused or driven in severe conditions. The interior leather is Light tan with a minimum of breached sections in the driver's seat only. As I mentioned before the vehicle is not perfect but it's damn good enough where it counts. this being the assertion of a 14 years experienced ase-certified Automotive technician. Message me when you've got your money in your hand and you're ready to buy it. I can do anyone the favor of meeting them with the car at any reasonable distance from North Austin, so long as they're seriously interested. All I ask is that on the test drive, if you make the decision to purchase car, we do the paperwork at my place of business; where I have another vehicle. He or she that buys this car will come to understand in short order the vindication associated with having out a gem amongst the rubble.

2009 M3 sedan

I stopped by this morning. Some notes here:

- car was parked on the best spot: front row, facing incoming traffic
- car was unlocked, interior looks very clean. Drivers seat in great shape
- the wheels are black. They are silver on the pics.

Didn’t ask for any assistance, just wanted to put my eyes on it.

2007 BMW 328i with engine beyond repair. Multiple oil leaks, broken serpentine belt wrapped around drive train. No rust, all quarter panels in good shape as well as hood and trunk lid. Tires only a little over a year old. Brakes two years old. Radiator two years old.

Car is fully paid off, but I do not possess title, so I am giving it away for someone to use for parts if you can haul it away. Car was still financed at beginning of chapter 13 bankruptcy, but full amount owed now satisfied. I can show paperwork to verify this. Finance company holding title until bankruptcy final in 2020.

I know E46 Touring prices are quite high already, but for that price I’d expect an MT or better interior color (if not both). It also doesn’t have a sport steering wheel or sport seats.

The only 3L swapped tourings I've seen sold for well over that!
The two I'm thinking of are the Steel Grey / Black one and the Alpine / Beige one. I think both sold for more than $12k.

I was actually looking for tourings the other night out of curiosity (as I really don't want to buy an SUV) and couldn't find any actually worth buying for less than $6k. It was actually hard to find facelift tourings in general, let alone nice ones.

I realized my search tool wasn't searching AutoTrader... but even after a search on there, all the facelift ones were basic as hell (no heated seats, halogen lights, etc.), and if they had the options then they were big bucks.

Plenty of cheap E46 sedans to be had.... no cheap tourings to be had. lol

I did find some cheap E39 tourings, but those were really old (pre-2000) and kind of beat up. The newer tourings 2001-2003 were between 2-4k, which isn't bad at all!

From seller : "What you're looking at right now is the most badass sports car the Germans have ever built.

If you're looking for a fun ride and a good time, this is your new pony.

The car has a few bumps and scratches, hence the discounted price. I just replaced the entire coolant system due to a leak in the coolant pump.

Nope. There are plenty out there for sale as well.

I don't like it when sellers make egregious claims. That's the only reason I even said anything. lol

It's like all the times when sellers say something is "mint". No; if it's not brand spanking new, chances are it's not mint. Every time I see "mint" listed, I see a worn (shiny) steering wheel or cracks on the seat leather.

Not an ad, but CL related. From the m3 forum:

"Today it was finally time for my best friend to get a proper car. He has driven a Kia Soul for the last 2 years and finally saved up enough for the car of his childhood dreams, the E24 6 Series. Being the "BMW guy" of my friend group, I had been searching for the right car for the past few weeks for him.

I had found a beautiful 6er on craigslist for sale in a very wealthy neighborhood just 15 minutes away from our town. Excited, I had contacted the seller via phone and spoke with a woman who seemed very clueless about the car and very eager for us to come see it. Regardless, we set up a time and went today.

We pull up to the gate of this house; rather mansion. Upon arrival, the wrought iron gates swing open in a seamless motion, and we travel down the long, winding driveway to see a Maserati, various BMW's and a Range Rover parked neatly in their front driveway. We ring the door bell and a middle aged woman opens the door with a big grin and a glass of chardonnay in hand. She invites us in and offers us BOTH a glass of wine prior to even discussing the car. We politely decline the offer of alcohol to the young men about to test drive their BMW. Great start.

Now she takes us to her garage; rather showroom. It's filled with BMW memorabilia and a silhouette under a (you guessed it), "BMW" branded car cover. Like removing a bra from a perfect 10, we carefully slip the cover off and she hands us the keys. She tells us to take our time, have fun, and to really open her up. Cool lady.

Off we went and the car drove extremely well. It was apparent the car was well cared for. Everything was in working order and it was an absolute blast. I just couldn't stop smiling seeing that long nose in front of us and hearing that glorious M30 engine. We were sold. The car was just pristine for it's age, and a steal at their price.

We returned about 30 minutes later and noticed a brand new 911, not so neatly parked in the driveway now. We get out of the 6er, slowly walking as we admire the 911, and walk to the door as a man, mid 50's approaches with a very angry face. He asks who we are and why the hell we are driving his car. Confused, we tell him we would like to move forward with the purchase.

Now the man started yelling for his wife to "get the hell over here" and told us it isn't for sale. Bright red and embarrassed now, still with the chardonnay in hand, she tells; rather yells at her husband that he needs to sell it. She starts screaming at him that it's a money pit and an eye sore. She tells him either it goes or she goes. They start screaming at each other even louder and as things escalate in this quiet and serene neighborhood, my friend and I walk away as quick as we can and haven't heard from them since.

Today, I learned a very valuable lesson: I should never get married."

SMG M3’s can be bought dirt cheap these days. One just sold on BAT last week for around $11k. Granted, it had an accident history and CEL, but compared to 6-speeds in good condition selling in the low 20’s, a $10k M3 still seems like a steal.

It's nothing you wouldn't expect from a +200k car, but its been leaking oil from the pan gasket for what looks like yeeeeaars. Tie rod boots have disintegrated, front control arms/bushings are sloppy, the entire rear end is covered in dirt from the diff leaking and then collecting more dirt, thus soaking up the leaking gear oil... It doesn't seem to be neglected, just needs some maintenance that the PO prob wasn't too concerned with compared to a career BMW tech.

Interesting the owner says "clean" title when it's listed as Salvage on this site... https://autoauctions.io/public/9675342/2016-bmw-328i-sulev

GeorgeH

Fredo, I've totalled out a few F30s for "flood damage." What would happen is the owner would drive through high water, suck it into the engine and the it would hydrolock. We were quoting long blocks and turbos so it wasn't uncommon. Because it was water related it got branded flooded even though it wasn't physically under water. Reading the description they bought it two years ago (making it 2-3yrs old and only 3k ish miles means it was probably more than just engine damage. Obviously the branded title doesn't differentiate between mechanical and electrical/cosmetic so for a flip I'd agree it's probably not worth it, but for a driver it might be worth looking into.

If so I will blame you for this because I will be dragging Botond with me to run ISTA-D on this car to make sure there are no issues. I also have a fellow Mafia member (he has two ZHPs himself) who will check the car out in person for me, I trust him and he's a very good friend of mine thanks to this forum. If the car checks out with him and it checks out with Botond then yes, I will have a new project once again... and I will be back into the ZHP fold once again... :drevil

EDIT: I'm now a 4-car owner. On my drive back while driving my ZHP, I decided my Audi will be staying so I now have two blue cars and two silver cars to drive[emoji41]

https://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/d/coppell-2007-bmw-m5-mechanically-sorted/7231638402.html

Lots of new parts. From ad:

"I purchased this car from Hoovie and since have given it a mechanical overhaul. I have all the receipts - work in the past 2 years includes: Rod Bearings, VANOS pump, SMG pump, seals, new SMG wiring harness, clutch, flywheel, clutch master cylinder, gearbox fluid, diff seal, differential fluid, oil level sensor, brake fluid flush, air filters, all front suspension bushings, power steering hoses, control arms, plugs, coils, alignment, tires, oil, filter and much more. Only the best parts were used in all this work - either OEM or better, high quality replacement parts (some of the parts are best replaced aftermarket so you don’t run into the same issues as OEM). The work on this car totals approximately $15k alone!

The car is mechanically strong and runs great, no lights or warnings, it needs nothing mechanically. You won’t find a better example mechanically no matter the mileage - don’t trust one of these cars unless you have full service with the major items done recently (otherwise be prepared to do all this yourself). Cosmetically it’s a 100,000 mile car with minor scratches or dings. There is a minor accident showing in 2012 on the Carfax (no airbags deployed) but work was carried out professionally at the dealer."

2013 BMW 335i with 135k miles. $10k. Nicely loaded. Per CarFax, the car was sold last December and it's back at the same dealer. I wonder what's the story behind.

Seems like a good deal. I am not familiar with E36 but if the inspection checks out, can be made into a track car...

Yes, that was likely a solid buy, S52s still go for $1500-2000 on their own.

fredo, looks like the seller either sold this car already or changed his mind and took down his for sale pages on CL and facebook marketplace because when you click on the links you provided they come up with this page don’t exist…

Seller says : "I will be requiring proof of ID and insurance, as well as a 500 dollar non-refundable down payment prior to any pre-purchase test drives."

I believe that touring will be on sale for a LONG time.

That's ridiculous. $500 just for the privilege of taking it to have it inspected? GTFO.

IMO, the E90 LCI sedan (2009-2011) looks good with OEM wheels style 397 which are common in the F30 cars. This 2009 goes for $ 4,400 but the miles are high at 215k.

IMO these cars are some of the best value BMWs you can buy right now (possibly even more so than an E46 :dueling)
