Looking for a local place to clear-bra my car... cause it needs support up front.

I installed BMW Performance rotors and Axxis ceramic pads front and rear. Fronts are pretty trick with aluminum hats and floating rotors but the rears are just a standard drilled steel rotor. Tischer had a great price on them....$78 front and $61 rear but it looks like they are all gone now. However it looks like Turner has them on sale this month.

They work great, maybe not quite as much initial bite as the stock pads but it sure is nice not having to clean my wheels every time I drive it.

They do look nice don't they? It looks like Turner is out of these now too. They've been replaced by a little different version from what I gather. They are also slotted now.

I'm glad now that I bought when I did because I was wondering if these might sell out at that price. I actually did my brakes before I had a light come on and once I had them apart I could see I had maybe 5 or 10 thousand more miles to go but I just couldn't resist installing the new ones.

danewilson77
11-17-2010, 06:34 PM
Yeah...it got pretty dirty today....so I figured I would wash her up. I take two MF towels with me..to use as a sponge, then soap it up..and rinse it off.

Had to get 3mm spacers for the fronts, as I had a slight rub on the coil. The ride, that low, was gonna end up damaging the car. I don't know how those guys at stanceworks do it?

Marcus-SanDiego
11-17-2010, 07:02 PM
I know how they do it, Dane. Ride be damned. It's, in some cases, all about looks. Tires wear quickly, suspension parts wear prematurely, but it looks good. And that's what matters to some of those guys.

11-17-2010, 07:42 PM

Does anyone know the quality level of DDM tuning lights? The corners and side markers seem to be a lot cheaper there than most other places. Thanks.

zhp43867
11-19-2010, 05:30 PM
You run the risk of getting condensation inside them, and they discolor more easily. If not for the tail lights, buy OEM for sidemarkers and corners. They aren't that expensive.

Changed oil on the ZHP today, washed, waxed and stored for winter......

Same here, last Friday. Went out for one last drive and topped off the fuel with a can of Sea Foam for stabilizer and changed the oil when I got home. I also pumped up the tires to about 48 psi and parked it on some dense 1 1/2" thick poly (?) foam to hopefully prevent the tires from flat-spotting. You can also see in this pic how my new BMW Performance rotors rusted after just a couple of washings. Not real happy about that, my old plain (non drilled) ones didn't do this.

Ya, I realize it's pretty common from seeing a lot of pics of peoples Bimmers with rusty rotors. I guess the fact that my old ones didn't do it for some reason is why it kinda bugs me. I'll just have to get used to seeing it.

This is my first BMW. I've had German cars for years, and I still have my '60 Ragtop bug. My last daily driver was an '04 GTI.

Sorry for the cellphone pic, its all I have right now.

http://i986.photobucket.com/albums/ae342/pyreguy/ZHP/Photo-0034.jpg

I bought my '04 Sedan last weekend. Drove from Baton Rouge to Memphis to get it. That was a fun trip, especially on the way home! Even after driving it home for many, many hours, I still had to take it for a good long drive when I got home. I just wasn't ready to stop for the night....

The PO put the halo headlights in along with LEDs in the footwells and over the license plate. The tinting on the car was way too dark for me to live with (10% all the way around) so I had that redone this week. 35/20. Otherwise its stock with almost 50k miles on it.

I've ordered the clear lenses for all the blinkers and the LED tails and black grills. I also got some lamin-x covers for the fogs.

I plan on doing software, an intake, a UUC shifter, and possibly some H&R springs.

I will post better pics as I do more to it!

Yes it truly does suck having to put the car and bike away for so long. I work for the ND DOT so I'm well aware of how much salt they put on the roads and there is no way I could drive my car on sloppy wet roads. Luckily I was able to get mine out 2 or 3 times last winter to get my ZHP fix. I just pick a cloudy day in the mid 20s or so, any warmer or sunny and things start to melt even though it's still below freezing.

A couple shots from last winter.....

Mine came with halos from the PO. I have no idea what brand or anything, but I can tell you I think they look completely badass. And most people out there don't even realize they didn't come on E46's cause they're so used to seeing them on BMW's by now.

Changed the rear brakes: pads and rotors.

Took almost three hours, taking my time. Had to really hammmer the rotor for it to come loose. The rotor had about maybe 20% left, but the pads were long gone.

Gonna do the fronts maybe 5k miles later, has plenty of pad life, but rotors, not so much.

The tricky part was trying to find a place to safely jack the car up.

Does....not....compute.

Use two hydraulic jacks. In the front, put your jacks under the yellow points, and jack-stands under the green points. Don't go near the red ones. Red ones bad. Jack the car up a little bit on each side with each hydraulic jack. When both sides are level and high enough, pop the stands under the frame rails (green).

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/nicee46/Maintenance%20and%20Misc/e46jack02.jpg

In the back, use one jack under the frame in front of the differential. Don't jack up by the differential. Put the stands under the rubber jack-points in the back.

Well I had a car jack that I used at the jack point by the rear wheels, but I wanted to be safer and put a floor jack under it too.

Since I'm relatively new to the site, since I bought my CPO in '09 I've added:
Dice IPOD Kit, Parrot w/Connects2 for Bluetooth and hands free, BMW Strut Brace (2 weeks ago), BMW Performance Air Intake (2 weeks ago), and a "universal" cup holder. Saving my pennies for whatever is next... haven't decided. Maybe a sound upgrade, but I think I'm taking the "close to stock or OEM" path so I may go with BSW. I wish I had known about Dynavin before, but I'm still tempted, once more of the refinement is worked out.

I do. What wheels are they? Offset?

i'll have to get back to you on specifics and size later this eve. they were off my e60 5er and stick out a little too far and since the car is lowered, rub terribly. not sure if they will work on an e46? i was hoping to at least break them down and put the tires on oem wheels, but he gave me 16's so no go. if you know offset on an e 60, that would be them. they are 5 spoke mille miglia. i'll put up a pick mounted on the 5. they are winters so not the prettiest but they clean up well and are arrow straight.

brand new firestone winterforce rubber. great tires and pretty inexpensive. i was able to pilot that boat around with no issues last winter. they have about 2k-3k on them and i rotated em once in between there, though they are directional so front to back only

I haven't been able to get it out on the interstate to really get into it yet. Tomorrow morning I will be driving into work for 5am and should have the roads pretty much to myself. My preliminary butt-o-meter tells me that the throttle is more responsive, low end torque is better, and overall the acceleration is smoother. There aren't any spikes in power like I used to experience. As I said before, I did the Eurosport intake at the same time, so I can't separate the two mods for an accurate description of either. But it was too convenient not to do it that way, and everyone needs to have a good intake anyway :p

When I play in the higher RPMs tomorrow I will let y'all know. In the mean time, a couple more pics. And I will get a picture of the intake tomorrow.

There's really only two things worth borrowing for - a house and starting a business.

Borrowing for cars is a necessary evil for some but if you get a good rate and pay if off on time/early it can be a minor bill. I was approved for 2.9% when I bought my car. Didn't make sense to put down a bunch of cash with a rate like that. I can earn more with that cash than 2.9%.

pyreguy
12-10-2010, 04:12 PM
I was fortunate enough to be able to pay cash for mine. I can't imagine having a car note again. I did it before years ago and it was bad enough, but with the cost of living nowadays, I feel like I would be choosing between a home or wheels.... Getting older does have some advantages I suppose.

Changed both belts, tensioner/idler pulleys and replaced the plastic water pump pulley with the ECS aluminum pulley.

Well, drove her for the first time in over a week today and detected the ever so familiar odor of burning oil when I got back in the garage (familiar from all of the leaks that I located and fixed on the 325).

Was thinking VCG, but the obvious spot along the back passenger side of the motor is clear. Pulled the air filter box and the waffle looks clean so I'm good on the oil filter housing gasket.

Oil level is good and nothing dripping underneath.

Gonna have to do some more digging this weekend, because I know I smell it burning off....

I wondered why I didn't see this thread having recent posts. I think we're posting our headlines in other threads....

Oh - here's my headlines:

Sunday the front passenger corner bulb went out - when I went to replace I found the wrong bulb in there (not 21W). That got fixed that evening.

This morning, the front passenger low beam went out. I stopped and picked up a Sylvania Silverstar H7. Supposed to be >30% better on intensity, side to side, and distance coverage. Unfortunately, I may cause some ppl to see spots. I changed both front low beams in the Advance parking lot. I had no problems getting out, but had some challenges getting the bulbs back in, seated, and locked in place.

just got back from the shop. Got an OEM oil change and changed some programmable options:
-Corner flash confirmation lock/unlock
-Auto re-lock after 2 minutes if no door has been opened
-Rear defroster auto-on @ 39ºF
yay :)

808ZHP, I'm sure it's in a manual or post somewhere, but if you could save me a lookup, how do you change the corner flash confirmation lock/unlock?

I know its not what you want to hear, but any dealer can change these options for you fairly quickly.

I can't find anything quickly on changing these options, sorry.

Dealer programming.......

Something typically done for free, perhaps with other work (such as the OP with an oil change)?

Depends on the dealer, I suppose.

I bought a key from my local dealer and they seemed willing to change whatever I wanted.

it's through the dealer when they plug in the computer to the car...if you bought a new key they shouldn't give you a hard time at all. It's very easy, I was right next to him and it's just a bunch of options. Eg. Daytime running lights: active/disable. We just went through each one and I said which ones I wanted turned on/off. He couldn't do some of the ones I wanted though...any suggestions?

My steering wheel is scheduled for arrival overnight so I stopped at the Fedex terminal today and had them change it to 'hold for pickup' so I don't have to worry about being home to sign for it or having to wait to pick it up after the trucks return for the day, usually around 1800. This way I can go pick it up anytime after 0800. :biggrin

Can't wait to see it and get it installed!

No, actually I got mine re-wrapped in Alcantara by Mike (Cobywheel.com). Post #15 here......

Also I installed an OEM Alcantara wrapped e brake handle and a different guy is wrapping my shift knob which hopefully will be on its way home by tomorrow.

Yup....bye bye ambers. The mods on my car beg for the cleaness....

Then maybe ///M3 reps......I went through the gray side....right on over to the dark side. Sorry BP.

For once I'm on the other side of the fence on something. Usually my taste lines up with the majority, but apparently not in this case.

Yeah....I loved that car...srsly. It was the BMW, I basically cut my teeth on...and I swear....I almost had it completed. Brake kit, coilovers, vanos, coolant overhaul, cps sensors, modded interior, rims, body was flawless (way better that the body on the zhp) - And you know how it is....thats just the major stuff.....I won't even mention all the minor tweaks we do.........and then it got totaled/rear ended..in the HRBT.

More pics since you said you liked it....and really thats not one of my better pics of it.

This was an early in life shot that I loved

Anyway.....just reminiscing Marcus...sorry. I get sad when I think about all that went into that car. That car is how I met Pswirley!!!!!

So...to even remotely make this on topic.....I took today off to wait at home for my clears...lol.

You will love the corners Dane. I just put mine on the other night. I wish there was a way to open them though, a black insert would look better with the headlights.

I want to open the corners and paint the side and a portion flat black to match the headlight housing. The inside on the housing is black on the headlights, not mirror like the corners.

Mmmmm......

I think if you did that.....then the two different types would almost be identical.

Don't you just love waiting around for the Big Brown truck to show up? Those are the days that they come later than normal.

I went to Fedex at 0830 and picked up my wheel and am taking off work at noon to hopefully install it today. Pretty cold out, our warm spell ended yesterday....of course. Still waiting on the shift knob too though.
