View Full Version : Best Time to Buy Apex Arc-8's?

After extensive research, soul-searching, wringing of hands, and continued bouts of self-doubt, I've decided to purchase 18"x8.5" ET38 Apex Arc-8's to replace the 135's on my stock ZHP (which are in primo condition), because I want light-weight wheels in the worst way (went with lighter wheels on my 330xi last year and was amazed--and that was only half this weight difference!). I also want a square set-up, and the only reason I'm going with 8.5" width is so I can continue to run the 225 and 255 PSS's on the car that are almost new (I'm sure eyes are rolling!). After they're worn out several years from now (I only plan to put a couple thousand miles on it each year), I plan to go with 235's or 245's, but I just can't wait that long for new, light-weight wheels. It's too bad, because I wanted 9" wheels and REALLY wanted a set of D-force LTW5's (although I'm probably better off with Apex).

Anyway, the point of this post is to ask, "Is there a best time of the year, and where at, to purchase Apex wheels?". It looks like I missed a group buy last year...

I'm sure another group buy will pop up for 18" ARC-8's this year. They ran a few last year.

I been waiting for the group deal to show up as well for the 18" arc8 wheels as well to ditch the style 135 wheels on my wife's zhp.

As much as I like the look, the finish is trashed and the weight of them is alot.

Hopefully they have a sale in the spring

Fortunately, she's sitting in the garage right now, so the wait isn't killing me like it would if I was driving it. :)

Similar situation here. I took of the 135s for a winter setup. Would love to put some new wheels after winter is over and install the tires I have on them which are still fairly new. ( stock tire size )

Sooooo, the day after I decided on 18x8.5" Arc-8's, Turner Motorsports marked their 17x8.5 Arc-8's (Satin Black and Hyper Silver) down 25%. Well, that blew my plans out of the water, and I decided there ain't no way I'm gonna run those 225's and 255's on 8.5" rims for the forseeable future. So, I threw money to the wind and ordered a set of Satin Black 17's and some 245/40/R17's to go with them. What am I going to do with my stock wheels and tires? Hell if I know!

Very nice. Welcome to the 17s club! Keep your stock wheels/tires. They are part of what makes the ZHP a ZHP.

Saw that as well. The 17's in hyper silver can be had for a really good price too.

$747 for a full set.

Arc8's are very popular, only time I ever found their group buy for 17/18s was in late Fall. Could be wrong though.

Great price, $103 cheaper than I paid for my Hyper Black set.

Group buy on 18's just started. I'm in for a set https://www.groupbuyparts.com/apex-18-arc-8-wheels-q1-2017.html

I'm thinking of getting 8.5et38 up front and 9et42 in the rear. Anyone running that size? Know if they fit on a lowered car?

I added my name to the feeler list. Gave it some thought about sizing as well and decided to go with the same sizing you had mentioned. Car is lowered as well

There is really no need IMO. Unless you plan to run like a 255 section width front and wear.

A 245 section width fits well on a 8.5" rim but a 245/35/18 has a smaller sidewall which is not always a good idea.

If you are concerned about sidewall thickness then why not go with 17"?

I plan on using stock tire sizes.

I would go with the 9.5 rear then. I had the stock 225/255 on VMR VB3's 8.5f, 9.5r and loved the sidewall stability.

what was the offset on those 9.5" rears? with the ARC-8s, the highest-offset 9.5" wheel is an ET35, which is not going to fit under stock bodywork with a 255. they do make an ET62 but that's effectly the stock offset, and i'm not sure if it would rub on the shock body or not.

Can you expand on the downsides of the 245/35?

I'd like to hear that too. Many people go 245/35 square (including me) and that's an good balance for an extremely close ratio to stock (given the differences between front and rear). If there are drawbacks, I have not heard of them nor experienced them. Of course, technically speaking, when comparing a smaller sidewall vs. larger, there are pros and cons to both.

well, i run 245/35/18 PSS on my ARC-8s. for performance reasons, they are spectacular. however that 0.2" less sidewall height that a 255/35/18 is definitely noticeable in the ride quality department.

I really wish Apex would make the 18x9.5 concave wheels in a +40mm offset. That would be the perfect square setup, and we could run 255 section tires with a moderate fender roll.

As it stands right now, I have 235/40/18's on my 18x9.5's, and even that took a little work to clear the rears. I fear that if I go up to 255, I would need more camber than stock.

That's disappointing, though maybe the Continentals would be softer. Or go the other way and do 235/40.

Ah yeah it must have been 18x8.5 et35 front and 18x9.5 et45 rear. Great fitment. Pity that Apex doesn't have that available.

Thought about this but then the 9.5 width rim is et35 and that will require fender work which I am trying to avoid.

Also as far as the the 245/35/18, nothing wrong with it from a performance standpoint. But everything else about that size on the front and the rear vehicle is a downside for me.

The steering feel suffers as well as the ride quality. Plus tramlining is more evident with the front tire being 245 section width

couldn't agree more. but in the corners it's a go kart. i definitely won't use this size again, will likely go back to staggered.

As far as tramlining goes, my square 245/40R17s haven't been any worse than my old 135s with factory sizes. It does tramline a bit, but that's really only on bad highway roads from my experience.
