View Full Version : Spare tire?

Tried searching as I thought there was a thread on this, but didnt find anything

I really hate the space-saver spare tire the ZHPs have. I threw mine on the other day to bring my rim to get repaired. Drove a distance of maybe 5 miles with it on. It sucks.

Somewhere I had heard that a Style 135 wheel wont fit in the spare tire well? I would try it if I had my car, but it is at the indy. I want to buy an extra 135 to have as a spare and get rid of the donut

So does it fit anyone know?? And if so should I just get a front to be safe??

I know Dane fit his 18" Enkei rim with no issues. I don't see why a 135 wouldn't fit. I could let you know on Saturday if you'd like, when my wheel will be off anyway. I'll put it in and see if it fits.

Yeah I know, it should no problem...or I could just pick up a different BMW wheel. I know the rim shop I go to has Style 44s, I could just get one, a 17" would fit anyway

Thoughts?

That's good to know. I'd like to get a 5th 135M wheel for the trunk.

Thanks.

Yes, a 17" with 225s; will fit all corners. I found a Stlye 74 Motorsports wheel on Ebay, bought a cheapie 225, and out went the donunt. It fits the spare-tire recess but, due to the slightly section width increase, the trunk carpet-mat just misses seating flushly. The only thing I had to do was slightly re-locate the back mounted wheel weights to clear the front brake calipers. Other than that, go to go.

All recognize mine is an 8" rim...where 135's will be 8.5" or 9.5" correct? What size would you get?

gr330zhp
04-05-2011, 07:04 AM
I thought the ZHP had 8" front and 8.5" rear :dunno

So I was thinking a front wheel, with tire in my wheel well, so it would fit there and also go on the rear??

MasterC17

I fit a rear in mine with no problem, other than the little black piece to support the trunk liner won't fit. Should be fine with a front.

The 135M is 8" in the front. It's 8.5" in the rear.

So what size is best to keep in trunk? rear size or front size?

Hornung418

I haz 6 style 44s :P
On has a slight bend that doesn't hold air :( So if you have an in with a repair shop who is not to expensive, I could make a deal. Back home the cheapest place to get it repaired wanted $95 plus a bunch of other fees like dismounting and mounting the tire and if they make it worse...would charge you extra...So I bought another one for $75 shipped.
So yeah...pics upon request.

Wash, I would put a front size in there because You know a front tire will fit in the rear wheel well, but a rear tire may not fit in the front wheel well....

Mike...I think you should check these 191Ms (http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=501223) out. $625 pick up only in Waterford, CT!!

Edit: 19X8.5 front and 19x9 rear. Offset is 46mm front and 51mm rear. 5x120 bolt pattern.

I think Keith should pipe up with some tire failure rate. what is the most likely tire to get a flat. My guess is front side passenger.

All I can find so far is this article concerning the Firestone/Explorer debacle from the early 2000's

danewilson77

The guy at Tirerack told me that there was a 51% chance at getting a flat on the passenger side of the car...lol. This was when I had directionals.

I know none of you guys want/have this...but i'd thought I share.

My car has an airpump and silicon in the back trunk. The airpump runs off of the cigarette lighter. If you get a flat (as long as it isn't blown). You can fill the tire up with air and silicon and it will seal the tire so you can get it changed. You fill the tire to about 45 PSI. Drive 3 miles, and the tire should be sealed.

Pretty interesting IMO if anyone wants to save weight :)

gr330zhp
04-05-2011, 10:24 AM
All Ms have that. And now, maybe all new BMWs as they all have runflats.

It is pretty cool, only thing is, that pump is supposed to be replaced every 3 years I believe. That's what the one in my dads M3 said on it. He never used it as he bought a spare tire kit for it. My space saver that is in my ZHP will most likely go in his M6 now

So waitaminit... there *is* a donut-style spare that came with some of your cars? My build sheet shows "spare tire delete" as a feature of the ZHP option...

Marcus-SanDiego

Kevin, is there even a hole in the trunk area where a tire would go?

Mtnman
04-05-2011, 11:27 AM
Ha, and kevin, the first time i looked for the spare, i thought it was missing...but it was in there....it just looked like it was an empty hole! lol.

There is a tray covering over the spare? My touring has that. To bad it's not a sport pack with a full size spare.

From what I've seen the only new BMW that has a spare as an option is the e70 x5. Everything else doesn't.

Just checked mine and it's that mini-wheel/tire combo. It would seem to be a really tight fit to put a full wheel/tire, but if you say it fits, I'd prefer that. Of course, given that I don't auto-X or anything, the chances of a flat aren't high, nor are they high that I'd be out in the middle of nowhere where I couldn't drive 20 or so miles on the "spare" to get to a place where they could fix the flat. So hmmm, maybe I should just stick with what I have and save the money/weight. Any good reasons to have a regular spare? (Plus with a regular, you do have to keep it pumped up).

Most definitely. It's below the fiberboard-and-carpet floor of my trunk, and currently houses my paper towels and extra quart of 0W-40 :)

Donut here too, I was surprised that the ZHP didn't come with a full size spare. My E36 M3 did so I just thought the PO of my ZHP did something with it, or had to use it, etc. Glad to see this thread though, and glad to know I'm not the only one with this question. Can anyone say "group buy" on 135M front wheels??

I think the reason the Ms come with that sealant/pump kit is because they don't have runflats. I doubt if the new non Ms would come with that kit. That's the whole idea behind runflats.....just keep on truckin'. Too bad they ride like crap.

I carry a small pump and some tire plugs. Hoping if I ever get a flat I will be able to just plug it and fill it up rather than having to use the donut. Who knows though, when the time comes I might just say the hell with it and mount the spare.

Rear fit fine on my car with a 225/40/18 tire.

I have to wonder if a rear with the 255/35 would fit though. I have my doubts.

Just picked up a new style 135 from Bav Auto

I just checked 3 different dealer part look-up sites and all 3 show "No Parts Found" for the front 135!! The rears show as still available. I'm hoping that is just a glitch or something.....I have thought about buying a new set someday. Mine are actually not too bad and it's just 2 of them with some rash but I may have to settle for refurbishing rather than new. Either Bav-auto had some on hand or it was just a glitch. Too bad they want about $200 more than Lincoln BMW for a set of 4.

I guess I could always just go with a square set of rears all the way around.:biggrin

I was going to put my new one on the car and an old as a spare, but the ones on the car are just gonna get abused with tire shops and such, so the new one goes in the trunk

But they want $400 a piece and the dealer is $331. I should just buy 1 of each for the left side. I had my tires mounted last time so that the 2 rashed ones are on the right. Then I'd have 1 for the spare and a spare spare.

I keep an 8" 135 back there during the winter and one of my winter wheels/tires during the other months. The black cover sticks up about an 1" but otherwise it fits fine.

Curious why you feel you need a full spare vs. the donut? Also, I like that idea if they are cheaper buying 4. Are you saying buy the 4 tires as a set, or the wheels, or both? It seems that bavauto sells the wheels individually. John

Mike V
04-05-2011, 07:54 PM
John, I prefer full size so that I don't have to ride around on a donut until a replacement tire comes in. Handling would be terrible and you are limited to a low speed with the donut.

Also, it would really suck to get stuck riding on a donut if you get a flat while on a road trip. Being limited to 60 mph (top speed is supposed to be 50) on the interstate wouldn't be fun at all.

I talked to a parts guy at Husker BMW today and asked him about the 135M front wheels showing as unavailable on their website and he said they are still showing "a bunch" in the system. He didn't know why they don't show up.

I have a full size 18" BBS CH with 235/40/18 rubber on, in my spare well. It does bulge just a hair but you would never be able to tell from opening and looking in my trunk.

I would think a 135 would fit fine in there as well. Anything in an 18 (minus a 255 tire) should fit fine.
