Guys, I'm not sure if any have looked into this...but I found this:

Seems like prices are really good for a big name. CarPlay is something that is of use to me and it's far cheaper than getting a fine for using your mobile phone in the car. I'm wondering why I would pick the top unit, AVH-4201NEX for $345 over other Android units for something that's plug 'n play in our E46.

My question is, will these models "plug 'n play" into an E46 with working steering wheel controls or is this a big project to force it to work?

I believe you still need a trim surround for these units so I know what's adding price as well as the non-OEMness (slightly ugly) look compared to the full in-dash android units.

Trying to make a decision on what's the best route to go and I know a lot of you are far more experienced with using these types of units already.

These types of units are 2-DIN, so they will probably require modifications to get them to fit. I think the air ducts behind the HVAC controls would get in the way. They also probably will not work with steering wheel controls...
