View Full Version : Vibration on acceleration from stop

Uh-oh.. I did some searching and found stuff all over, but nothing very useful, here is the trouble:

1- with the car at a full stop, in neutral(manual 5 speed) and clutch released, sometimes there is a whirring noise, if I depress the clutch 1/8 inch(really barely touch/apply no pressure at all), the noise goes away. Noise is not there at all times when car is stopped and in neutral with clutch released.

2- when I engage the clutch, put the car in 1st gear and accelerate normally, there is a shake/rumble/vibration for 1-2 seconds, until the car is at about 10mph. From there on, the car responds normally. No smell, no loss of power, and it really does not feel like the clutch is slipping...

3- when shifting down, specially from 3-2-1, I can feel a slight rumble.

All this started happening this afternoon after a somewhat hard acceleration to get in the highway, and I had to "hang" in 3rd for about 40-50 yards to keep rev up to get into the next lane.

So, in your experience, what can the problem be?

Drive shaft vibratration or wheel bearing. Did the sound get progressively louder after time or is it more of a vibration that got bad one day and every time you got on the gas hard it was then worse after that, and vibrating your rear view more than likely in this case?

I might have misunderstood the question.

I would think it is clutch related, it only vibrates when coming from a stop and just for the first couple of seconds..

Yeah, I re-read your post and thought that too. Can you post video from that sweet iphone?

I have a similar problem, I discussed it with dw and we came to the conclusion that if I could stand the noise and it still drives the same then ride it out a little. When it does start to really affect drivability I will do the whole clutch kit and everything else, btw I don't have a garage either, but I have a very nice bmw enthusiast down the road that will let me do it over in his garage. Does it sound anything like this

not totally like that, it's more like a whirring noise like a faulty belt, then when I touch the clutch it goes away. One more thing, I did have this problem, just always thought it was normal:

Sounds similar, I you can tolerate the sound then wait for a consequence before you act on it.

I am way to picky to tolerate that, I know it's terrible for me to be like that, but I feel an urge to fix it.. like an OC thing...

sounds like this:

Understood. I hate it also but have two cars to keep up and have to tolerate it right now.

I am shouting at the local BMWCCA forum to find a garage to borrow, I'll see what my indy guy tells me, will pay the diag tomorrow...

Its the clutch release/throwout bearing. Mine makes noise too, but it doesn't seem to be as loud as yours. I can hear it in the morning when Im still in the garage, but can't really pick it out (the noise) any other time. Sometimes when Im next to a building in the drive thru or something, I can definately hear it. If it was me, I would drive it til it actually becomes a bigger problem or til you find a garage to use. $1000 for that kind of work at a shop is fair, just a big chunk to drop on something that you can easily do with a buddy and the space to do it. Eduardo just turn up the radio, lol!!!. Are you driving to the meet in June?

Indy's diagnostic: TOB, will do all clutch kit, $730. Not as bad as I thought...

weirdly, the shaking stopped... drove 70 miles to a national park to have fun with the kids and no more problems.. still a little noisy.

Good call on the whole kit and a decent labor price. I will do the whole kit when I can no longer stand it also.
