View Full Version : To claim or not to claim? That is the question. ZHP fog and underbody damage content.

Not for the faint of heart....

Ugh.

Driving home today.....I was behind a white truck.......who was behind a logging truck. See where this is going? So....logging truck start to dump debris off his truck....and ends up shedding a "knot" outta one of the insides of the tree. I saw the debris start to fly.....nowhere to go.....locked in doing 65mph......I grip the steering wheel tight.....oh boy here it comes........white truck goes right over it.......then......I came along......Boom.

Exterior inspection revealed cracked bumper (underneath), and a busted passenger side fog (The one I replaced only months ago).

I have not inspected the underneath......but will do so here in a little. Pics to follow.....in typical tease fashion.

Even if I had pics now....I would make you wait...hehe.

Brake duct......Nuked.

Control arm dust cap.....vaporized.

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/nicee46/IMG_20110506_155520.jpg

Underbody splash shield....smoked.

Fog light and frame......history.

I am thinking of making a claim on this. What do you guys think? Deductible is $500.00. It will not happen prior to the meet.

kayger12
05-06-2011, 01:36 PM
Certainly looks like you've got more than $500 in damage. I'd make a claim, collect the check, by the parts, DIY, and do the other control arm.

Good point. In that case, I would DIY everything but the bumper. You'll end up reimbursing your deductible that way-- and maybe even having a little left over.

Dane. Make sure you tell them the object had fallen out of the truck and was tumbling down the highway (if its true of course). If the object was moving, and had just fallen, its a comprehensive claim and ur rates dont go up. I had 3k of damage to my car and it was covered after 500. Fixed in 1.5 weeks. Do it tonight and she'll be all better for the meet. Just stick to ur guns though. It took me 5 calls. I never got mad, and everyone i talked to was nice, just be persistant.

Never drive behind uncovered loads. Too bad white truck blocked your view. If you need something that you happen to find on the west coast (like someone parting out) and need help with getting it over it you let me know.

Like keith said, if you diy most of it you probably come out with some extra cash. My e30 took that small tree a year ago and after I bought the car back from them I got 1500$, and I used my spare windshield and a little metal bending to come out +1500$. What insurance company you with? You should be glad that these cars have those shields under there or you might not have even made it home. What's so hard with the bumper other than the paint?

danewilson77
05-06-2011, 06:34 PM
Nothing.....just the paint...and I have never installed one....

I am with USAA.

If I can install the same bumper for 10 hours, I'm sure you can have it done in a half hour :) Sucks Dane, You'll be happy you made the claim, and they should give you a rental if you decide to let a shop do it. I hope you have time to get it taken care of before you take off for a month. :( Your car will be beautiful again, don't worry!

Yeah...I guess now that I think about it...when my car was totalled last year....I think I got a rental for $600 worth? Something like that. Anyways....I think I may do the payout and just diy it, as mentioned. I already have UUC CAB's that need to go in....and I can get the zhp suspension kit for cheap right now. That would leave me with a bunch of spares, as I would mostly just replace the control arms...and maybe FSM/RSM.

I will buy new bumper, have it sprayed, and maybe Johnboy can aide in the install.

The reinforcement plate and splash shield are no brainers.

I think the toughest part will be finding all of the brake duct and wheel liner parts.

Should leave me a bunch left over for a new winshield, and some other stuff that needs handled.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I've done my e30 and its simple as unhooking fogs and brake ducts and that stuff, then just two big ass allen head bolts and it just slides forward and off. I've never done it on an e46 but looks just about the exact same. Here is some stuff out of the bentley manual.

I think deer are the worst:

879

Note head impact to the right, and legs on the bumper. I hit this thing at 65mph, and it bounced off flying. Had I then driven over it, all the hoses etc. would be ripped so, I'm +1 on the undercover and reinforcement plates of BMW.

(and I did get more $$$ when they totaled it than when I bought it, but of course that didn't cover all the repairs etc... over time).

BMW ball joints are pressed in at the factory and require the entire control arm to be replaced. Meyle has a wishbone with replaceable ball joints which helps reduce cost, but mfg. quality seems to be a crap shoot.

. E46 ZHP Suspension Upgrade Kit -ES#: 58066 - QTY 1 The BMW part number is 33500429577 for this kit, and all the BMW online dealers should have this closeout special.

Since the E46 hit the ten year mark, BMW is dumping all their special kits stock (carbon fiber strut, air box, drilled rotors, suspension kit, and probably a lot more).

These days, "Measure twice cut once" means "check three or four vendors before pushing the paypal button."

Try www.theBMWpartStore.com (http://www.theBMWpartStore.com) - $480 plus free shipping if I read it right.

Free Shipping on orders over $50: Shipping weight must not exceed 20lbs. Body parts such as bumpers, fenders, and hoods are also excluded.

That was actually a pretty miserable job. I didn't expect that going in. The few number of bolted fasteners would lead one to believe that it's a simple job (and maybe it is sometimes).....

The outer ball joints (both) were basically welded to the kingpins, and took forever to get out.....Inner ball joints are just a nightmare to tighten properly...

Suspension felt nice....but

Drove it to work this morning......got the "brake" and "DSC" light which is indictive of a car, badly out of alignment.....so I will be getting that done asap.

Thanks for the support.

Sorry to hear the control arm job was tough. Glad to hear you got it apart and back together.

Hearing the prices the adjuster quoted for the parts sounds like she is talking about used (junk yard) part prices - not new.

I liked going to the stealership for alignment - it was only $99, they did it "right", and I got the cool data sheet showing before and after data on the alignment.

Dang, my control arms weren't that bad when I changed them out. Do you think it could be the suspension that added stress on the components, making it difficult to remove?

Naaa...everything was loose as a goose. Those beotches were just welded together. I soked em with PB for hours....and still...they required some serious beating. So much so..that one ball came outta the joint. Nasty job....

Good work, DW. I feel your pain. I ended up taking a Dremel with a metal cutting blade to the passenger outer nut on my 325 to get it off.

The control arms on the E36 are even more of a pita imo.

Did you ever figure out what was up with the lights on Dane?

I just happened to run across this Youtube video. Or did you try something like this when you were fighting with them? Seems almost too easy.

Update: car couldnot be aligned. They are claiming the coilover is busted and bends in the middle when they grab the tire at 9 and 3. We'll see. I was thinking mabye the hit took out the wheel bearing...idk.

The hits just keep comin. The start to an absolutely wonderful weekend.

The front end just doesn't "feel" right. I figured after the new CA's and CAB's...ride would stiffen up. It became better....with bent CA replaced...but still didn't feel right. That's what prompted the alignment. Not sure I believe the guy that the coilover is broken. I still gotta look at it. I would put more money on the FSM. IDK....I will keep you pal's updated. I do know one thing.....this is the last thing I need right now....

That sucks. I am not getting the bending part though.? Have you pulled on it yourself yet? Wheel bearing or shock mount sound like good ideas. Don't forget, I know of a good alignment shop here that will do your setup custom to your suspension, just sayin, sometimes a dealership wont want to be responsible if in question.

I just inspected it. Guy is full of Baby Marky poopy. Everything is sound....tight...and ready for a test drive in the morning. I may just be feeling the splash shield vibrating. It's one thing I haven't fixed since the smack. Best price I could find was $374.00.....

As for what they were talking about...I have no idea

kayger12

Maybe try dropping the splash shield and take her for a good run without it. Sucks playing the elimination game, but that might be the only way you narrow down what you're feeling.

I was pushed off the road a few weeks ago and did a little underbody scraping at front drivers side. Terrible vibration above 55mph. Replaced LCAB and sway bar endlink on that corner. Cleared up 90% of vibes. A damaged tire was the remaining 10%.

Sounds like that side of the front susp took a decent beating. Enough to throw off your speed/brake sensors.

Maybe rotate tires to diagnose if you see fit.

Thanks for the data. I did a front to rear swap on Friday. Endlinks are the ones that came with the FK's. The only think left is tie rod, or shock. I do not think it is the shock.

Don't forget if you find more damage that the insurance did not get you can file an amended claim... and ask for coverage of the item.. i.e. shock.. or mounts

Body shops do it all the time, they get an estimate start repairs, find more problems, call adjuster, get more money to fix new problem.. you will probably need to document what you find, pictures etc.. call your adjuster.

Glad your car is back up and flying along. Same thing happened to me, well almost the same.

Driving home from work, and some animal (was night, not sure what it was) ran out in front of me. I swerved to the right, and smacked my front passenger tire and bumper corner into the curb. Rashed bumper/rim - bent control arm - bent strut - ect ect. 3000k worth of damage. Paid my 500$ deductible and got my local BMW dealership to repair it. They did a great job, front end looks brand new now. The front passenger side is now tighter in handling than the drivers side, and it drives me nuts.

It really is amazing how much damage you can do with such a little hit. Just glad to have my baby back, with a new bumper. Old one was rock chipped to all hell.
