Tis a very tempting upgrade, especially for the price and OEM look. Which, allow a quick digression...Were they really charging over 1000 bucks for this?! Yikes! I think I'll let my brake upgrade go a little longer (wish I could find a complete set of these... http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-330Ci-M54_3.0L/Braking)

Someone please give me a reason not to buy this. Please? Tell me the replacement filters are only available from the mountainous regions of Guam, or that they're expensive, or that my hood won't close, or that I can't install it myself (seriously, I can't), tell me these things so I don't buy it. Okay? Thanks.

@!!#$%& That was my #2 rationalization for considering this out of the realm of possibility for me. (#1 being ~$300 is still not yet in the budget for non-essential car parts.) Now I only have one rationalization for agreeing with the wife & not buying one . . .

Ah, I was where you are, too. BUT, it's a simple question of math, or as Jeremy Clarkson would say, maths. See, the original price was over $1,000. The current price is $285. That's 72% off the original price? Simply put it to the wifey like this: "Dear. I promise not to buy anything for my car that's not at least over 50% off because I realize how frivolous some car expenses are. Consider this an agreement on my part to be frugal. By the by, there's a small piece that increases the car's efficiency as well as safety for over 70% off the original price. I think it's prudent to get it."

If she pushes the safety issue, improv something about hearing the engine at highway speeds.

I received this intake from ECS while on vacation, was sitting by the garage door when we returned, planned to install it on my wife's ZHP vert tonight or this weekend. When I opened the box tonight, 2 of the 4 little tabs that attach the lower half of the additional snorkel to the upper half are broken, the two broken tabs are on the same side. Two questions: (1) did anyone else have a similar problem with broken tabs?, and (2) are these tabs really necessary or can I superglue the upper half to the lower half of this extra snorkel -- do the two halves need to come apart in the future for any reason? I know the concept is to get more air flow, plus look carbon fiber pretty, so would think if I superglue it along the whole upper to lower snorkel interface then I'm just making it more air tight and functional.

Thanks guys.

pleasecorrupt & Dane - totally agree, should get 100% functionality for the price paid, was just thinking about the "what-if" they were to give me trouble on getting another one, i.e., the super gluing idea.

Marcus & Keith - it definitely looks like poor packaging; they protect the bottom & top of the box but the air box is free to move laterally inside the package; there is definitely a mark on the inside of the packing box where one corner of the now broken tabbed snorkel came in contact with the cardboard and gouged it, probably when the package was being tossed around during shipping.

I plan to call ECS today or Monday.

Okay, new intake received on Friday and installed yesterday. They opened the box at ECS and over-packed it to prevent those little tabs from breaking again, impressive.

New justification for anyone to buy this intake -- the little engine stumble at 3800-4000 rpm that many of us have experienced, well the installation of this intake solved that problem. Know the engine is getting more air now, and suspect enough to overcome that previous stumble. So its not just for aesthetics, it has an input to the longevity of your engine and improved drivability too. (That rationale worked on my wife.)

I just got off the phone, from quite a lengthy discussion with Chris. She says it is their policy....for new purchasers to have items shipped to their billing address. This is a fraud issue.

You need to email her back...and tell her that I vouch for you, and your good standing on the forum (I vouched for you on the phone, with her as well), and that you will, take your $$$ to another vendor, if they don't ship to your office.

She will hand carry this email, to her supervisor who will make the decision. I am curious to see how this plays out....so, please shoot her the email.
Lemme know how it turns out.

NOTE TO ALL: for those of you who have dealt with Joe@ecstuning in the past...he no longer works there and is now employed by www.encoreautos.com in Sarasota. I'd get the BMW performance one...Just based on the fact that the velocity stack from the stock box is still used.

aFe makes a velocity stack add-on for their intakes, but I believe it's a good chunk of change.

What the stack does is smooth out the airflow before the MAF. This allows for more air to fill the tube and a better MAF reading develops more power.

The best intake out there in terms of power is the Long Tube intake. Not because it draws from the bumper, but because the air has a lot of length to smooth out and get the most oxygen.

nike001
09-05-2011, 06:05 PM
I knew that^ But I'm too much of a wuss to saddle up and get a long tube due to the fact of the fear I'd have of hydrolocking :)

Hornung418
09-05-2011, 06:17 PM
Speaking of Hydrolocking...I had to think twice last night. Morgantown got hammered by that storm yesterday and the roads surrounding my apartment were flooded, I couldn't leave my street. With all the drunk fans from the game and all the traffic (as I live by the stadium), it was impossible to go anywhere.

I have a long tube intake chillin below my headlight :shifty

Somebody is trying to tell me something. Every time I start to forget about getting this intake, this damn thread pops up and punches me in the face and reminds me. Wifey is not going to be happy with all you bast@&$)s. I will be collecting bottles and cans like some kind of land clammer to pay for this one. My zhp better sound really badass.

That sucks. Were they seemingly in stock when you ordered? I would not be pleased.

That sucks. Were they seemingly in stock when you ordered? I would not be pleased.

At that price ($296+shipping) they probably sold like hotcakes. So even if they got a shipment of 50-100 E46 intakes it seems feasible to me to have so many orders placed in a day that someone might place an order and the website shows in stock when in reality they might have just run out hours or minutes before that order was placed. Sucks, but it happens...

they'll have some more in stock soon. just sign up for the email notification whey come available. that's what i did.

BMW rates the BMW Performance Intake at +3 HP. "Real world" results say it's +7 HP. Reminder, zhpmafia sticker is, I think, + 5 HP? :)

Or you can be like Albert - ZHPMafia, BMWMafia and MFest stickers. Gotta be like 100hp from stickers alone

Did it! Snagged what was apparently an old sale listing on BMWPartsSource.com & got it shipped for $300! (They immediately raised the price back up to $700-some.) Got it installed fairly easily; that lower intake tube was a PITA to get off the stock box! I couldn't get the MAF tube in, though, before the baby needed attention. Anyone else have trouble getting that back in? Or tricks for making it easier?

Take the o-ring off the intake, spray down with WD40, put back in. The MAF will slide on easy

FTW; thanks, Hermes! Had a slight problem with the hood not closing fully, but after a couple minutes of wiggling & fanagaling, it's all flush fully closed! I can't wait to give it a go!

yeah, that seems to be another normal issue we've probably all had. I've realized that it's because of the little foam sticker on the bottom of the snorkel. If you adjust the positioning of the sticker it will close fine

"Snorkel" being part 14 in the pic?

http://static.bmwfans.info/images/epc/NzkxMDJfcA==.png

Also, the foam bit at the front of part 11 pretty much disintegrated when I removed it; shouldn't be a big issue, right?

11 fell apart on mine too... by snorkel I mean the thing in the bottom left of the following pic (non-existent on stock intake). The part that pulls more air into the box vs stock air box to smooth the air flow. You should see two white foam stickers on the bottom. That's what causes the snorkel to sit too high and cause your hood to close weird.

Also, Make sure you remove the tab from the expansion tank showing how to check coolant levels. If you dont remove this tab, the intake will never sit flush. There is a DIY for it showing this tab.

Does anyone remember the filter replacement intervals?

Pretty sure that as I came in to work today, I noticed 2 filters in parts. They looked pretty much identical, but I remembered people saying that the BMW filters are going to be hard to come by when it comes time for replacement.

danewilson77
03-30-2012, 11:37 AM
I believe recommended is hugely long.......but I would do it.....every 15k.....certainly not more than 30k miles.

I clean my dry every 7500 miles.

nike001
03-30-2012, 11:44 AM
Oh okay. For some reason I was thinking the interval was something like 6-8k

danewilson77
03-30-2012, 11:47 AM
I could be wrong. It's posted somewhere. I just thought I remembered saying......"Damn....that's too many miles". I may be thinking of the stock filter though.

My local dealer has one M54B30 Performance Intake in stock on display. They want $915 installed...I had to chuckle to myself when I saw the price. I'm sure it can be had for around $700 if they want to move the product.
