Please check into this thread here if you are driving down to the Family Reunion and live in the Tri-State (OK, Massachusetts and above are invited too :biggrin) area. The purpose of this thread is rollcall and info collection so I could mass email everyone interested in driving down as a group.

Please post here that you have the intention of driving down in our group, and then send me a PM with your real name, place you're leaving from (town/city, state), phone number, and email address. Once I have a list, I will mass email everybody so we could coordinate on departure times and where we're going to meet up along the way.

Thank you!

P.S. - Moderators - Could you please leave this thread in this subforum and not move to the East section? This is an easier to locate thread as it's in the same subforum as the Reunion thread. Thanks!

I think PA is not in your tri-state area... Plus I'm headed down Thursday night.

If you head down I-95, rush hour traffic around Balt and DC will be brutal. Be careful.

Bill,
If you want to roll with us, that's fine despite being in PA. The time we're leaving is TBD, though I wanted to schedule it for a non-traffic timeframe.

I made it to williamsburg from my place in 5 hours flat with some heavy traffic south of DC in september. I'd like to leave central jerz between 8:30 and 10. That puts us down the TP fairly easily, through baltimore after traffic, and through DC at what should be a relatively calm time.

Me too, but I'm finding ways to make things work. It means cutting back on spending in certain area that I can afford to cut on (such as cafeteria food - bringing my own now). This means $$ for mods and meet travel expenses! :biggrin

I'm going to be setting this group ride up for an arrival early-to-mid Friday if possible. I'm still collecting names so that I could mass email everyone and find out what works for everyone. Unfortunately, this excludes those of you looking to ride down on Saturday, unless y'all want to set up something amongst yourselves.

Charlie,
I think you're the only one that I don't have official contact info for. Could you please send me a PM with your phone number that I can reach you on the day of travel (just in case) and an email address?

All,
Going forward, please send me where you're coming from as well as your name, phone number, and email address, so we could easier coordinate meeting locations. Everyone who has already messaged me, please send me the location you're leaving from (town/city, state). Sorry for the inconvenience; afterthought. lol

I'm right at exit 8 on the NJTP, so anyone coming from north of there will pass me. I suggest a meet-up spot of the richard stockton service center on the turnpike. It's at mile post 58 or thereabouts.

If you are the southern-most person in our convoy, then we could use that as a possibility, but we'll keep that to the emails. Let's just keep getting "registrations" in first. :)

Cool. If my wife and daughter still come, we're leaving before my daughter falls asleep Thursday night (probably around 8pm).

If it's just me, I can leave whenever.

FWIW DC rushhour (and 95 South) get pretty crazy on Fridays early... Like around 2pm.

Will be driving from Hanover, PA and can meet the caravan anywhere along the I-95 corridor from Baltimore to and through DC into Virginia. Have not decided if I am driving around I-695 Baltimore beltway to I-95 S or down I-270 (Frederick/Rockville,MD) to I-495 on the west side of the DC Beltway to I-95 S.

Hi Gary! I've done the drive up to Buffalo and driven past Rochester. Suggested routes include I390 to Rt 15 South (NY/PA) to I-270 S (MD) to DC Beltway. Not a terrible drive.

If you haven't made that drive, I can suggest some rest points if needed. Just let me know about how often you'd need to stop.

I've got a set of them that I use on long trips with multiple cars... But I don't know if they are compatible with other brands/models.

I also don't have PTT on my phone (e.g. Nextel walkie talkie).

I'm sure we could figure it out. If we all have Botond's number we can call him and he can put out the word that we'd need to stop or whatnot.

I really do want to sell my Escort to get a V1. Just because I want the arrows.

You gotta be careful when buying Escorts (and I know that's the same about V1s). The 8500x50 Rev5 can out perform a new 9500i radar detector. I got mine used for $130, got it upgraded and serviced...and still was cheaper than a $500 one :)

Exactly. That's why I want one.

I don't need anything that's higher performance (Highest confirmed Range on my 8500x50-> X Band was 7 miles, K Band was 5 Miles, Ka Band was 3 Miles). I just don't feel like looking in my mirrors and trying to figure it out.

Guys,
Unless you all are planning on going on by yourself and going 80 or more, it is completely irrelevant what radar detector you have because we will not need them on this particular cruise. This is a cruise down, not a blast down the interstate. In 55mph zones, I plan on keeping it at 70, and in 65-70 zones, 75 at the max, assuming clear traffic. Otherwise, we will be going with the flow.

If you do not want this to be the case, please carry on without me. Otherwise, I plan on making it down on one tank because gas ain't cheap, and for that to happen I have to average a good mpg, which ain't gonna happen going 80. I've had enough scares from dirty tactics employed by LEO on the way down to DW's place the last two times I went; I am playing it 100% safe on this trip. Keeping it to the speeds I posted, I am able to get down there in a touch less than 7 hours. Google says 8 hrs, for reference.

If you have plans to go faster, please PM me and have your name removed from my email list. Hopefully I'll have time to send an email tomorrow or Saturday to those in the group to coordinate.

+1, agreed.

I use a radar detector not to speed but rather, as another situational awareness tool when I drive down. I typically stay about 5mph over traffic flow or stay with traffic if heavy. Not worth it to go any faster and if cruising in a group I'd rather keep it slow as to not attract unwanted attention anyway. Better to be safe :thumbsup

Yes. I already got pulled over in a group of 19 cars because a couple of them decided to be idiots. I'm never doing that again, especially considering I had to drive over to another state to fight it because they gave ALL of us a moving violation (unsafe lane change).

My mantra is ALWAYS 10ish over ( when in a 55 mph or above) if traffic allows, and go with the flow of traffic. Hopefully most (all) of our drivers are courteous and safe drivers.

If not maybe you need to go thru the Street Survival Program sponsored by BMW CCA and TireRack

I can say that I have been fortunate enough not to get pulled over while driving in a large group, but I can completely relate to what you went through... I would rather relax and enjoy the drive/ride rather than be all stressed out just to save several minutes on the drive....totally not worth it IMHO...

On my drives to DC last summer, I have seen many LEOs pulling people over for many different reasons, speeding being one of them. I get looked over many times while driving my ///M which is why I stay +/- 8 when I'm on the highway. I think the "magic" number is like 10mph... I get looked at if I'm close which is why I have been staying around 5mph lately, just very slightly above if not at the speed of traffic flow. Like I said, I use my radar detector for situational awareness and as an aid while driving. Not something that tells me that it is okay to speed. Every time I have dropped my guard and relied on my radar detector to "do its job and keep me out of trouble," I always got nailed so I stopped relying on them as a measure to help me avoid speeding tickets a long time ago. However, with that said, I now use them to provide additional information while driving. I feel that is it better to be aware than get caught completely by surprise. The Laser Interceptor I'm planning to get for my ///M is not to jam the LEO's equipment but rather provide me an additional aleart measure.

Driving these cars... sometimes you don't realize just how much over the limit you are driving...(80mph in a 65 or 75 for example). I enjoy cruising and an occasional run-in's with other Bimmer owners. Makes for a fun and interesting trip :thumbsup Besides, I think it looks better just to sit and cruise down the highway and enjoy the view as people drive by...:biggrin

:shifty I struggle driving more than 5 or 10 over with my 1 y.o. daughter in the car.

I try to keep the emotions in check, use cruise control, and stay away from the excessive speeders.

Marcus-SanDiego
05-27-2011, 06:35 AM
Definitely a good idea to drive less than 10 mph over the speed limit. Just a habit for me to have the V1 going, even when I am not speeding. Want to know where everything is.

az3579
05-27-2011, 06:47 AM
Goes without mentioning that I wasn't expecting anyone to go speeding excessively, not at all. I have full faith in this group; just was getting worried at the sudden mention of radar detectors and the like.

That would be far too late. We're still debating on when to leave. I'm pushing for a midnight departure from my house to ensure no traffic whatsoever, yet some people don't want to do that and want to leave much later. :(

Its difficult to coordinate these types of things. Don't sweat it BP. If you can facilitate... that's awesome...

Maybe through your facilitation... people can set up a couple caravans. All you need to do is track what type each person wants to leave and link those peeps together... it would still be epic. :)

My main issue is getting everyone together with the least amount of disruption possible. I already know two of us that absolutely refuse to sit through any kind of traffic (Charlie and I) and were hoping we could get everyone on the bandwagon for a very early departure. We have to keep in mind that it is Friday, and most people still work on Friday, so they will be out there clogging up the roads.

It takes me about 3-3.5 hours to get to the Delaware Memorial Bridge, taking my time and no traffic.

Yea there's just no way I'm gonna do a midnight run down there after a work week and a 12hr+ work day that Thursday night. More power to you all, seriously, if that's the decision. I am more than okay driving down by myself. No worries whatsoever fellas.

You guys should all com down and be here at the pre-scribed time of 1700.....if I can throw my $0.02 in. It's gonna be a long night, and an even longer weekend. People need to be rested....to be safe.

That'll be perfect for me leaving around 1200 or so

I'm in central jersey (mercer county) literally a minute off of exit 8 NJTP. I'm thinking of leaving between 9 and 10, taking my time, puttering around down there until I can check into my hotel, then getting to Dane's when he told us to get there.

Edit - when I say "puttering around down there" I mean "spend hours in the yankee candle store which is a veritable amusement park of scented goodness and indoor snowing." In case you weren't sure...

I know where that is. I used to do some networking for a group of Lawers up there at my last job. Depending on how fast you drive, we won't be that far apart. I'm down near exit 2. Maybe we should swap numbers over PM?

My wife is addicted to Yankee Candles, she buys a whole bunch of little ones and makes me sniff and guess the scent. We've got a whole cabinet full in the basement LOL

I'll shoot you a PM.

I went in the williamsburg yankee candle store with some friends. We played the blind sniff and guess game for way too long for grown men to be playing the blind sniff and guess game. Way too long. Children were looking at us like, "Alright, we get it, you think this game is fun. Move on."

I'd love to leave in that timeframe, but I'd be sitting in traffic for 2 hours on the way down there, plus the amount of time it takes to actually get to that part of the turnpike... :(

This is proving much more difficult than I imagined. lol

Not trying to cause you stress Botond, its just work the day before throws it off. If you guys want to run out on your planned time that's cool I will catch up at some point.

I'm working on Thursday as well; I'm going to get home after a full day, take a 4-hour powernap, and wanted to be out by then. That may change now since nobody seems to be available at the time.

I'm considering splitting this up into two groups; those that want to leave at a normal morning time, and those that want to get there by the normal morning time.
I for one cannot sit in traffic; it is the equivalent to force feeding highly sugary desserts to someone with diabetes; it will not end well. Of course, someone else will have to head up the later-timeframe group...

Regardless of what time people arrive in the greater Williamsburg area, DW has politely suggested that people not arrive before the posted 1700 time.

Just want to make sure that is clear so we don't have people showing up before things are prepared.

BP...the cure for stop and go traffic is not to avoid it, but rather leav lots of space between you and the car infront, and go half the speed of the surrounding motorists. You wont have to continuously shift and you wont stop which makes it smoother. Plus you may find that you actually bust the jam by having the row behind you continuously moving as well.

Don't fear traffic, embrace it, and accept it as a part of having a license. There is no way to avoid waiting in a line of some sort anywhere you go...hell, we will have lines at the meet for food...

But seriously, I'd like to meet up with y'all on 95.

And, just my two cents, this meet only happens once a year. I hate traffic as much as the next guy but it's a small price to pay when you're rolling with your friends to an epic event. Consider this possible traffic as a one-time event.

Regardless, I will see you guys next week.

I've driven to and through DC probably hundreds of times now. I will have no real issue with traffic at the time I'm leaving. But if I do, I consider that a problem to solve, and I find a way around.

The best route is 95 at the right times to avoid anything heavy. Leaving from my place between 9-10 am puts me past baltimore before 12 at at DC around 1, which is a full hour before the friday traffic really starts. That said, on a Friday it won't be totally smooth sailing.

Baltimore door to door is 2 hours for me, DC is 3 or 3.5-3.75 depending on traffic. Williamsburg should be another 2 hours or so past DC.

I'm still undecided on route.

Might go Parkway to the ferry and then the coast, chesapeake bay bridge tunnel, and up through Norfolk.

Little more time, but a much nicer drive.

This is why I sent emails to those involved... we have too many varying times of departure, so officially the group drive is canned, unless people can meet up with us at the times Cameron, Camilo, and I are going (he's still good for this timeframe, right Cameron? Camilo, please chime in if you can...).

I'm not going to get into why I'm not going to deal with the traffic as I could write a dissertation on it. Hell, if I wrote that dissertation on it, you all would be convinced that I am certified psycho-impatient. :rofl

If someone else wants to set up the drive for a later timeframe, feel free...

I figure it's worth another shot. Hopefully everyone will respond to this next email with "sure, that works for me!"....

In which case, our group just got back to its original size. *crosses fingers*
If everyone agrees on meeting up at the requested time this go around, we're probably gunning for an approximate 16:00 arrival at DW's house.
