My wife was driving yesterday and in her words " the little can with the drippy thing light came on." but then went off and car runs fine, She said It came on and stayed on longer today but then went off. I found its actually the Oil Pressure light. there is plenty of oil the car runs great no bad noises under the hood. I called the local dealer who said its most likely the sender. Shes going in tomorrow to get checked. Its still under a CPO warranty so I hope all works out. But the big question is he asked me do I want a 3 series or a 5 series for a loaner. what do ya all think, Any body have sender problems before? or should I start crying

Thanks

Was it yellow or red?

Red = Oil Pressure. You don't want this one.

Yellow = Oil level. This one is ok. Ensure level is normal. If it is....your oil level sensor my be going bad. Replace at next oil change. Very common on E46.

What color was the light? What kind of oil are you using. Was the light on when the car was idling or were the RPMs at 2K and up?

^ haha, beat me to it!

Just spoke to wifey, she said it was orange and was driving around town. I checked the oil level yesterday and it was full, so I guess I'll be ok. It has mobil one in it, but was thinking on changing to Amsoil European at next change. Thanks guys for the crazy quick response. outstanding

Yeah....continue to monitor level. If the light continues to come in (yellow).....just swap out the oil level sensor. Buy a BMW sensor.

Why change to a diff brand of oil?

+1 to the before posts, good luck with it, and pick up a 5 series loaner just to change things up a bit.

I will keep everyone up to date. I was told Amsoil is a better oil than Mobil one but no real proof. we will see what the dealer says, first time with a dealer on the vehicle, hope all works out good. is the sensor easy to access, I have a Bentley manual so Ill look it up. I think a 5 series will be neat to try out.

You just need to drain oil, remove the reinforcement plate (7 bolts), then you will see sensor on bottom of oil pan. Then unplug sensor and remove 3 bolts on sensor. Done.

Update. I brought it in to the Dealer. since its on a CPO waranty till end of the month I figured I would give them a list of things to look at and see what they could do with it. Well I am freaking impressed. light on is oil level sensor they are replacing it. also added heated seat on high i weak at best they are replacing the element, groan in front end is r/f wheel bearing its being replaced, the rattle I heard in front of engine I thought maybe waterpump ( i already bought one to put in ) is Vanos and they are changing it for me. grand total $0.00, They said parts wont be in till friday so stay in the 2011 325xi till its done. WOW I going to the casino today it is obviously my lucky day.

I so am already, I belong to many boards and so far this I must say is the MOST freindly and knowledgeable board I have ever seen. I have yet to see anyone get flamed for asking a seemingly stupid question. to me there is no such thing as a stupid question so I truly am impressed. Cheers to all.

Nice work. Glad to find a dealer that was willing to take care of all of that for you. CPO warranty FTW.

Assuming the dealer checked the rear subframe while it was in their possession? Might not be a bad idea to ask if they did the inspection.

Excellent. Glad to hear you're being taken care of. That's great.

As for the level of friendliness and knowledge on this site, we were recognized in Roundel magazine as a forum that has cleaned up the Internet. See article here (http://roundel.imirus.com/Mpowered/imirus.jsp?volume=rd11&issue=6&page=106). We take that reputation very seriously. That's why, even when we do have a member who doesn't want to play by the rules of the forum, we do our best to give that member remedial training.

If remedial training doesn't work, and the member just can't play nicely, the person is invited to go elsewhere. To this point, we've never had to ban someone. However, we have seen a few members self select and decide this place is not for them. Apparently we are just too friendly and nice or something.

Date expired October 2010....though some dealers may offer a good faith repair should you need one. Mainly 2001-2002 affected.....and they were tracked or from the North East.
