All

Changed rear differential fluid(with Redline 75w90), changed Manuel tranny fluid (redline d4atf) and oil and filter (Mobile 1 0w40) yesterday. Very easy and only took about 2 hours to do everything.

Next weekend I will replace fuel filter, replace thermostat, replace water pump, replace temp sensor, replace expansion tank, replace filler cap, replace upper and lower hoses and replace control arm bushings. Can't wait.

Ah, maintenance. Fun stuff to catch up on. It always seems like the car is happier after some work though.

echo46,

I need to perform these same oil changes soon, would you mind sharing where you bought the necessary oils, and how much of each I need?

I know I need 7 quarts of motor oil, but I wasn't sure how much I need to buy of the Redline for the Diff and Trans.

Thanks.

Seven quarts of Mobile 1 0W40 from pep boys, 2 quarts of Redline D4ATF for the manual transmission (my car took 1.6 quarts) from a local store known as SK, 2 quarts of Redline 75W90 oil for rear differential (my car actually took a touch more than a quart) also from SK. However, as DW said you can find it online cheaper than I paid at ecstuning. Good luck, easy DIY.

Thanks for the replies guys.

In looking around online, I found this Oil Change Kit (http://bmwpartssource.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=MorePartInfo&PartID=890994&siteid=216042&catalogid=7880). Does either of you (or anyone reading) have experience with this kit?

I have no experience with that particular kit. However, and I don't want to kick off an oil discussion, I have always used Mobile 1 0W40 in all my BMWs and had pretty good results. There is a good oil thread on e46fanatics if you do a search.

Should be gtg. That's the proper BMW oil.

The only cheaper way to do eeeeet..is to use CCA discount on the oil at stealer...and buy filters by the case. I can do my oil for $49 this way and no shipping....except one time every 10 filters.

My e36 is an auto and I used the D4 Redline ATF. However, he should call Redline or at least check their site. They are very helpful.

Ok just checked. They say that the D4 Redline ATF is used in both the manual and autos. Also to use the 75W90 GL-5 Gear Oil for the rear differential.

Quick question. When is MTL used?

DW don't quite understand "when is MTL used?" but if you're referring to the MTL vs. d4atf , I just called rep. at redline, asked him same question 70w/80 MTL or the d4atf, he said both can ne used but the d4atf is recommend because supposedly its specs are the closest to OEM...
Sorry Dane when you reffered to post #4 I thought it was the same part#s as echo....

DW, it is my understanding that the MTL can also be used. I asked them the same question when I was doing my tranny fluid change. They opined that MTL can be used but that they recommend the D4 as a better choice and what imola said.

OK...Thanks to both. I just wanted to make sure I didn't need to swap out. I'm due anyhow......

Guess I will move over to D4ATF.
