View Full Version : Difficulty when shifting into third gear...

Just like it says, it seems as though lately there's a temporary block when attempting to shift into 3rd gear. Like it just won't enter the gate. It also seems to only be there during very lax driving, and slow shifting. If I'm driving more aggressively and shifting quicker at higher RPM's, it doesn't seem to show up. Also does it, though not as much, during downshifting, and same conditions apply: If I'm rev-matching and driving more aggressive, there's no problem. It's during a gentle coast when I try easing into third, that it just seems to be blocked temporarily, then slides into the gate.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks!

Probably just a synchro winding up. I've noticed this on mine, as well.

I noticed this on mine also. I changed the trans fluid and haven't had it happen since. It rarely happened before but so far I haven't seen it since changing the fluid.

Great to know. What type of fluid did you use?

I used redline fluid.

Done deal... I'll start there and see what happens. Thanks.

So that means you'll be paying me a visit at my work?

Curious for a data point:

What kind of fluid are you running now, and how long has it been in there?

Droid X. Tapatalk. Use it.

I've noticed this too; using redline.

^I'll second that as well. Redline is pretty excellent.

I'm surprised if the trans fluid had anything to do with the shifter not going into the point. I rarely have this trouble when trying to go into 1st from idle, and also just wrapped it up to synchro problems, similar to what llll1l1ll said.

It's normal for a manual to shift better at a higher rpm. It has to do with the speed the input shaft is turning in comparison to the output shaft. When you shift at a lower speed the input shaft can actually stop turning (or slow way down) when you disengage the clutch and are between gears which makes it harder for the synchros to do their job. Same reason that rev-matching makes it easier to select a gear, you're basically trying to get both shafts rotating at the same speed. That's also why fresh fluid can make a difference.
