Hi all,

Before I go out and purchase a cord for the aux input, I was curious if I would be able to even use my iPhone's MP3 player with the aux input in the car. I know the aux input is really set up for the iPod, but if it's just putting sound out of that little jack, I'm sure it could work, right?

Thanks,
Peter

The aux input is just a audio jack. You could plug any kind of audio device into it. I use my iPod through my aux.

Sure, a standard headphone cable will work fine. I use the dock connector and get, I think, better sound... at least to my old ears. Like this ... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003L13BNI
I also have the glovebox flashlight-to-12V adapter to supply charging power

How does one go about installing an AUX input?

Keith did a DIY on the Aux input. Here you go: http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?662-BMW-OEM-Auxiliary-Input-DIY

Wow, didn't even think to get that. I did not see that on Apple's site. In any case, I bought a cable from Monoprice.com that's super insulated. It cost me $3.30 shipped. We'll see how that works.

AUX is the way to go. I'm glad BMW made it easy to add.

I use my iphone and aux in for music almost every time I am in my car. I have this mount: http://www.bimmian.com/46/MDM/ And use it every time i get in the car regardless of whether i plug in the music or not. The mount works great for google maps or quickly viewing incoming texts or whatever.

I love my AUX port. We have used it with iPhone 3GS / iPhone 4 / Galaxy S II Skyrocket / and various laptops. This was the first 'mod' that I ever did to my ZHP.

I use the same mount, I'd recommend it. This version looks updated compared to mine though. And, yup, AUX cable works fine for iphones and other devices. I use DICE for my ipod, but I also have an AUX cable hooked to it and I've used it for iphone.

I used the aux cable and mounted it in the tray above the ashtray that way I can coil it up and hide it or slip my phone in the tray when I use it works well for me

I'd die if I couldn't have an aux input, It's all I listen to. I've had my car for well over a year, and I've only put 3 radio stations in the radio memory just in case.. but all in all, I think I maybe only listened to the FM radio for a total of about 10 minutes.

I only wish that the aux cable was easier with phone calls. Whenever I try to keep it plugged in through the radio and talk to someone, they hear their own echo. But I've kind of learned to put the volume down so you can just hear them. That usually helps with the echo..

Quick question guys. Our cars do not come with Aux jack? I ask because on my car i have one by the the center console behind the shifter and next to the emergency lights buttton since day 1. It seems to be screwed on but tends to slowly loosen through driving, and causes some cracking noise to the speaker when the input moves around. Maybe i need to get it replaced.....

Since day 1? Are you the original owner?

No, E46s didn't come from the factory with aux inputs, but it was (is) an available OE retrofit. The "traditional" place to install the port (per the kit's instructions) is in the little tray in front of the coin holder.

get a USA Spec: cheaper, charges the iphone/ipod, and display song/artist title on the radio and use all the steering wheel controls and GREAT sound - miles better than aux through headphone jack - and you can install it yourself in 20 min.

the steering wheel controls (skip/next) worked even with Pandora with the iphone 4s, when using the USA spec! THAT was a surprise!

iPhone has always worked fine with my AUX input. Answer calls, text sounds, music, Pandora all works. I put mine next to the passenger heated seat button.

IIIIII'm baaaaaack! Sup guys, long time no talk, missed ya!

Okay down to biz... I want to put an aux hookup for iPod/iPhone in my car, finally, so I'm just looking for some guidance. I got most of the answers from this string already, but wanted to confirm a couple things. I'm thinking about getting this kit, any thoughts, good/bad? One site said "Vehicle must be recoded by a dealer after installation", is that accurate? Seems plug n play to me.

Also, will the below cable do everything I need? Which "everything" basically consists of playing Pandora and charging my phone...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003L13BNI

Thanks fellas

Heya, Jeff! Long time, no see!

That aux kit is completely plug-and-play, no “recoding” required. And that audio/sync cable is exactly the one I have in my car; works perfectly!

(Note that this setup does not connect your iPod/iPhone to the steering wheel controls, it’s purely aux-in audio.)

I'm selling my DICE unit if you're interested in having steering wheel controls with your iPhone.

That's what I needed to know, thanks! Only thing is, and what I didn't want to know, is this aux cable/system/hookup biz only works on facelift models... Alas, I had to sell my prized ZHP (don't hate me), now I have an '01 330i. Per this thread http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?661-OEM-BMW-Auxiliary-Input/page4&highlight=input+808zhp (top post on page 4) it won't work on '99-'01 models. Is that right?? If so, F...

There's gotta be a way to do it for pre-facelift cars.. If Car Toys can do it, it can be done!

As far as I know, you would just need to add a Business Radio from an '04 up

X2...Plus I will sell mine if anyone is interested. I don't use it anymore now that I have the Eonon GM5150.

Ahh yeah, that makes perfect sense, no fittiment issues for pre/post facelift interior pieces?

Peter,

I know I'm late to this thread but as other's have already put out....you can use any device that has an audio out for your aux input. :) Right now I'm using my iPhone 5s on my Aux input for both cars without any issues.
