Tools required:

1. Phillips Screwdriver
2. Standard Screwdriver
3. Beer

And of course......AFE DAS's.

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/nicee46/IMAG0426.jpg

Step 1. Remove stock air scoop by removing 3 plastic rivets.

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/nicee46/Maintenance%20and%20Misc/E46intake-1.jpg

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/nicee46/Maintenance%20and%20Misc/image001.jpg

Have a beer....and know...you are half way done with this diy.

Step 2. Remove 2 phillips head screws....hidden below the intake, and pull out on grille scoops, and put the DAS in. The green dots below indicate approximate position of screws. Reinstall intake and three pop rivets.

Dane,

are you worried about any increase in rainwater passing into the intake?

I don't think that is going to be too much of an issue unless he nose plows into some puddles or a truck decides to use his car to show what a wave looks like hitting a BMW.

All modern airboxes have water outlets at the bottom of the box to let out large amounts of water. Plus it would take a substantial amount of water to hydrolock an engine. Substantial amount as in more than rainwater (short of possibly a hurricane) can produce. Most water that does get sucked into our airboxes on normal rainy day situations gets vaporized anyway.

Just my 2 cents

Someone on E46f did a test on intake temps and the temps at full throttle from 60mph or something dropped by ~10* because of these intakes.

Dane,
I was looking on the AFE website for this and it didn't show up for non-M cars, did you adapt an M3 DAS for your car or do you have an inside scoop on this new item? I like the idea of keeping the stock intake and increasing the airflow so this may be my next performance mod.
thanks!

There is a RPi scoop for the Z4M. I know that's off topic but everyone that has installed them has said that with the OEM intake there is a CONSIDERABLE increase in response above 50 MPH.

Good point Monkey. I took Dane's #17 post to presume it would be the same for non-M but a different one might be for us. Price is different for a separately listed scoop for E46. They don't seem to have the package scoop advertised with a specific skw/man. part but at the bottom of the page they indicate it's application is for 01-06 E46 M3 with (45-60081). Checked AFE's site and searched for that number with no results. But you could easily be right.

http://www.modbargains.com/aFe-Dynamic-Air-Scoop-BMW-E46.htm - specifically listed for E46 @ $129.95 (54-10468)

I checked AFE's site for BMW and came to their page where scoops were listed. Didn't find anything differentiating non-M v. M:

http://afepower.com/bmw.php?page=2&brandID=0&sortby=newest&menu=bmw&searchtype=family

I'll ring them Monday to ask if the package scoop's manufacturer # is 54-10468; will update/remove post if different.

Dane, where did you post your intake dyno test results (with or without the scoops)?

Edit: And thanks to all else who posted about this on here, and to Hermes for answering my questions about it over at e46fanatics.com. I ordered the $89 deal package today with a $5 "cyber money" coupon I heard about in today's CCA email newsletter. I don't know if it's gonna help at AutoX (typical top speed for me, 65mph), but should be good for a few HP on track straightaways. I read the thread on E46fanatics where the guy showed the scoops dropped IATs 4° to 10°F at faster speeds.

this is the dyno thread: http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?1714-BMW-E46-330-ZHP-and-Non-ZHP-Dyno-graphs.

also, none of us really have just the DAS, so dyno will show multiple mods.

on a separate note, I was talking to Nick (chapter pres) a while back and he said that back in the Cunningham days some customer decided to put all the possible BMW Performance parts on their car, car lost HP and gained FT/LBs... weird

LivesNearCostco
11-30-2011, 12:10 AM
Hermes, thanks for the link. Actually I figure scoops will not show any difference on the dyno unless you have a powerful fan blowing air at 70 mph into the scoops. I was wondering more about a dyno test of aFe (or K&N) intake vs. stock airbox vs. BMW Performance intake.

All BMW Performance mods lost HP? Interesting... I do hear of certain mods sacrificing low-end torque to gain high-end HP. Or racers in some classes tuning to increase torque but decrease peak HP so they can run a lighter car but still have the torque for acceleration, as some classes limit your HP-to-weight ratio.

Dane, haven't you done VANOS seals a few times already for various people?

Mod Bargains just called. They're sold out of the $89 aFe super scooper (aka "aFe E46 M3 intake Scoop Value Package"). They will still honor the sale price but it won't come with the keychain, baseball cap, and license plate frame. I told them I'd take it anyway. Heck I don't need more power... the ZHP has more than enough power for me on the street, though maybe that's because I don't drag race and have never driven a muscle car. It's only for those fleeting seconds on the track when the M3 is pulling ahead of me on the straight and the instructor is yelling "full throttle" but doesn't realize I already floored it one second earlier. For that 0.01% of my driving time I am willing to spend a few thousand on parts, software, and maintenance. How silly am I?

The key point for fellow Mafiosi is if you want this scoop, ask Mod Bargains if you can get it at the Value Package price of $90 instead of $130 (plus shipping, and sales tax if you live in CA).

Hermes

If he just wants the link, you can send him the link! But not sure that will be enough to get the old price. If they buy them from aFe for less than $80, maybe they will still honor the price for you as a way to try to win you as a new customer. If they are paying >$89 in their costs, then I doubt they will honor the old price. Or TME Tuning still lists it on their web site, though I assume they don't actually have it in stock:

I think the scoop can provide colder air into the air intake and prevent sucking hot air in. I was thinking about cutting the driver side brake airduct inlet next to the fog light to suck in more cold air into the bottom of the AFE housing. And put a plastic cover to cover the hole in the rainy day. Sound like my silly mod :P

you won't feel a thing. had these on my 328 E90 - good in theory but they really don't do anything unless you're hitting like 150mph. even at 70mph the benefit is marginal.
