ZHP 100k overhaul

i looked through the maintenance thread tagged above in this section and basically got the following out of it:


control arm bushings
drivetrain fluids
clean ICV and MAF
plugs/coils
vanos rebuild
CPS
valve cover gasket
belts/pullies



what is your suggestion for diff/trans fluid? suggestions for a good spark plug? also, my brake light came on driving home from work. any suggestions on rotors or pads or both? im not looking for fancy stuff here, just a good OE rotor and a pad with little brake dust.

also, any other suggestions on what i should look at replacing would be great. im not trying to drop $2k in maintenance here but want to hit all the major ones. any suggestions for what to do would be great.

Redline MTL for tranny (manual) and Redline 75W-90 for diff.

Ngk bkr6equp for plugs.

I see no mention of AC overhaul?

Talk to Ray about a brake kit that includes rotors, pads, fluid and ss brake lines for

Recommend you at least do turkey baster fluid swap out of Power Steering fluid.

You may need new end links, tie rods, or front/rear strut mounts, but that can come with suspension replacement.

i found a good parts list for the vanos rebuild (besian rebuild kit and then a couple OE part numbers for the spring/bolts/seal/etc).

Brakes pads....

Ebc green stuff, pbr ultimate, etc...

AC system overhaul is...

-upper and lower rad hoses.
-temp sensor
-thermostat
-expansion tank > most important
-coolant
-water pump

*its all pretty important as your weak spot in the cooling system will just move depending on what you replaced. Eventually you will have a failure.

ahhh, the cooling system was revamped (and updated) around 80-90k by P.O.

yeah, i saw you posting that in another thread around here somewhere. .30 cents cheaper on ECS than RL website. i honestly dont know if it has a green label or not. why do you ask?



the suspension on my car is about 90% regarding the actual components themselves. im sure they are worn out a bit as i have some minor clunking going over speed bumps/small bumps at low speeds. ill probably wait on that overhaul and pass on doing any suspension components this go around, want to focus on the motor preferably.

If your tranny has green label...use MT-90. If it has no label....use MTL. Mine has no label. Here...look through these. The Redline is about half way down page. Read the notes.

Also...be advised I just picked up my MTL off of Amazon for about $10/qt.

gotcha. well i think im going to hold off on a few smaller things. im going to get my pads/rotors inspected @ work and see what all i need (hopefully just pads/sensors).


probably start ordering parts sooner than later. hoping to have my m52 e30 back and fully running by the time this needs to happen and then i can drive the e30 for the first time for a few days while this all is being done @ the shop.

i took a deposit on it a month ago and the buyer backed out for personal reasons so its back up for sale, yes. more goodies/new parts and so on. its VERY close to being finished

Drained and re-filled a few days ago with MTL. I had about 325 miles ion the RP.

Im having one of the techs here at work (Bluegrass Audi (sect of Bluegrass Motorsports)) check the brakes today to see if there is a faulty wire or if the brakes do actually need to be done. thank god for a half price labor rate here, that eases the pain of this service interval haha. i think it may be a faulty wire because i was taking the trash out (apt complex) and i set the ebrake to then go throw the trash out and came back, let the ebrake down, and the light came on. maybe, maybe not. i guess the brakes could stand to be freshened up anyways.......sigh

welp, everything has been ordered minus a few OE pieces for the vanos from the dealer (spring and bolts). ive got about 500 miles before i hit 100k and about 900 miles before my next oil change so i think im going to hold off until the oil change. probably mid october i would think.

Did you get soft jaw vice grips? Do you have a pneumatic ratchet?

Me = 4 hours. I have done 6 of these jobs. Not tooting my own horn, but if the techs look through the procedure, and know what they're doing, it will probably take them 5.

Make sure you got the 15 grommets, and vanos gasket as well.

Also...make sure techs know, the vanos piston bolts are reverse threaded. You do not want to break one.

Should do plugs here as well, if close to due.

what is the part number for the 15 grommets you speak of? i dont see any part on the VANOS unit blow up from a thread on this site where there would be 15 grommets.

happy to report my hesitation/low RPM stutter/misfire is gone.


motor runs smooth, shifts like butter, and im very happy after everything was said and done. ive got about 180-200 miles to "break in" all the vanos bits but im impressed and thoroughly happy with the results so far.

i think most, if not all, the vanos rebuild pieces are in here/where to get them/etc.


all in all, i think i spent at/around $1000 for all the parts for this service.
