EDIT: Marcus speaking here, peeps. Guys, after spending some time over at BMWMafia.com this morning, it became obvious to me that we need a photo of the day thread for cars. We definitely have enough photographers who can help fill this thread up.

This is for pictures YOU take. Showcase your photography skills here. If you want to post pictures of awesome cars (using pictures you did not take), you can post them here (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?179-Non-ZHP-Pure-Sex-On-Four-%284%29-Wheels-Thread).

Enjoy!

Here is a picture of Johal's beautiful ZHP.

I saw what Casey posted before he deleted it.

I wasn't going for selective color, just wanted to tone down a bit the saturation around it. I prefer the yellow there because it is subtle, and red/yellow are pretty opposite on the spectrum. I get what you're saying though.

Ahhh. I thought you were going for the selective coloring, which is why I made the comment. I had not seen Casey's comment (but have since seen it). I think it would look better (to my eye) without any color (except for the car). I was distracted by the yellow (even though it's muted).

Nice shot, regardless.

I thought it was dented too -- after you mentioned it. I missed it the first time. Just a bad angle (and the white car distorted it too).

Nearly every inch of this car is in focus, and the back ground is perfectly out of focus. It blows my mind how you do this, especially at this angle on the car. I know I'm shooting with substandard equipment, but are there any tips you can give me as far as things to pay attention to while setting up the shot. Also the lack of shadows on the car puts me in further awe.

If you ever feel inclined, I'd love to know how you take a shot like that.

I'm not sure how Neil does it, though I'd imagine it's the same as this process. My friend takes a rig that he built, a couple of suction cups, and sticks this looooong azzed rod down the car where the camera will sit at the very end of it on a camera mount. The other end of the rod is attached to these two suction cup mounts that get suctioned to the car to whatever angle you want. He then sets up a very long exposure shot on a timer, which gives him and a friend enough time to get behind the car out of sight and push the car very slowly. Once the camera is done taking the shot, you'll have yourself a nice long blur trail behind and around the car making it look like the car's in rapid motion. Do some touchup, Photoshop out the rig, and you're good...

Have to do it on a surface where the camera will stay stable and not bounce on the rig.

Marcus, yeah it's exactly how he described it, spot on actually. Build your own boom (or buy one), attach said boom to a car via suction cups (I use five), mount your camera at one end and go for it. Some people actually drive the car, some people push it by hand. Here's my rig setup: kinda ludicrous and I love it.

You then have to clone out the rig in photoshop. For example... straight out of the camera:

When you are setting up your shots, see the end result in your head before you shoot it. Then it is just simply making sure you have the proper light, settings, and location to accomplish it. The more sterile the environment is typically the less shadows and reflections on the car, however, if you shoot a lot of cars you learn that the different angles on particular shots will mask distracting reflections or glares. Choose wisely or a reflection may wind up looking like damage to a vehicle or be very distracting and take away from the shot.

There are also filters that you can use on your lenses to reduce glare and reflections.

C Withers Media
09-15-2011, 10:56 PM
Dane a rig typically costs between $250-$350 to build properly depending on the amount of suction cups and clamps you decide to go with. A rig like Neil's is closer to the high end of that cost because of the precision with which it's built and the addition of the guide wire. There are concerns when sticking it to a car, the rule of thumb is to never use it on non factory paint and even then make sure you have enough paperwork to cover your ass in the event of a mishap.

Neil's rig was about 1k.

Nice. He uses 5 cups, 5 clamps, a ball head and he has the tensioned guide wire and the pole....Didn't figure that would be over $500 let alone almost a grand. Either way, it is a solid set up and he obviously utilizes it extremely well.

Hit the ground rolling in the ATL. Plane landed at 12:09, by 12:21 we were in the X5 and I was hanging out of the window on Interstate 75 through downtown Atlanta shooting Nick's hard stanced E30. I guess people didn't think this was a business trip.....

A buddy and me made a quick video using a suction cup mount on the roof of my car. I was so nervous it wouldn't stick or it would scratch my paint. Neither happened and I hit speeds in excess of 80mph. The mount had three suction cups in a triangle arrangement, and the camcorder sat ~3-4" centered above mount. We did have a hard time getting the camera to stick towards the front of the roof due to curvature.

My car has been repainted, but I used BASF products, which is OE. And we prepped the surface w/ alcohol wipes.

Very nice. Shots like that are what got me into rig photography. I hung my tripod out the window one night and one thing led to another, haha.

How much did the rig cost to build, and are you concerned when sticking it on your car?

Beginner questions. They will get more challenging...hehe.

As casey mentioned. Rigs start out around $250 but they can climb to $5000 if you wanted (carbon fiber main booms). My rig right now sits around $1000, actually a little less. It started out as a $250 rig but I've added and added components to it over the year. As follows:

Main boom: 4x - Aluminum tubing 2" OD (.125 wall) in 4 foot sections: $100
Couplers: 3x - Aluminum tubing 1.5" OD (.125 wall) in 2 foot sections: $50
Second arm: 1x - CF Support arm: $110
5x Suction cups: Avenger F1000: $55/per
7x Super clamps: Manfrotto Super Clamp: $27/per
2x Extenders: $35/per
1x Guy wire+: Metal cabling one at 12ft, and at 16ft. Nuts, bolts, washers, cable clamps, etc: $50
1x Ball head: Manfrotto 486RC2 ball head: $80
1x Manfrotto grip head: $35

$950-ish

As far as mounting goes, yes I used to worry! The suction cups used in these setups are no joke. They can easily put rings in the clear coat and really mar the finish. But these things only happen if you aren't following proper rigging etiquette. No mounting to fiberglass, carbon fiber, freshly painted panels, dirty panels, etc. You have to be really careful. But the more cups you use, the better the force is distributed and therefore less risk of clear coat rings. More cups also equal a sturdier rig which means better photos. Sharper, cleaner, farther field of view, more rigging configurations.

Neil's rig was about 1k.

It's refreshing to see a non-swapped e30. Tell your boy it's a good looking car, and to keep doing what he's doing. Looks good with those Bayern Mesh rims. The Frenched bowls look perfect. I've done the same with my e46. Totally in love with the look on blue cars.

Thanks very much, if I see Alex again, I will make sure I let him know. Already 1.4k shots in and arrived 53 hours ago, 8 of which were sleep. I have a few more things booked for this week and my projects with Halston from BSW/MotorSportMedia are going well. Nothing scheduled for tomorrow except the Falcons/Eagles game at the Georgia Dome.

Saw Neil use this technique a while back, although I believe he used a much shallower DOF..This is the Brenizer Method and I was using an 80-200 2.8 lense at 2.8.

Halston of BSW/Motorsport Media/ATL Focus flew me out for a week to work on a few different photography related projects with him and when the word got out that I was going to be in Atlanta, a family that follows my Facebook fan page booked me for a day to come to Columbus and shoot their daughters senior portraits. As it turns out the father of the girl I shot handles all public relations and media for United States Army competition shooting team. Halston and I made the 2 1/2 hour drive and I did the shoot. We figured while we were there we might as well get a few shots of his E30 in the rain on the middle of main street.

It has been a very successful business trip thus far and has resulted in a lot of fun in the meantime.

At the end of the day, nothing describes a successful trip more than hearing this from the person who hired you.

"Thanks again so much to Casey Withers for not only his expert photography but also how he gives confidence to those he is shooting. He makes the session so comfortable... First Rate." - SFC Kevin Heermann, United States Army

We should probably keep this thread specifically for pictures and not boasting our personal businesses.
Making another thread so you can do that might be helpful.

All right, guys, let me give you my thoughts on the situation.

One, discussing businesses and discussing context comes with the territory in these kinds of threads. Kyle asked Casey a question about his presence in Columbus. Casey responded by laying out exactly what he was doing. He also mentioned that this was business related. Gabe, I'd expect you to do the same.

Two, it's rare for someone to simply drop a picture in here and leave it at that. A little context is always appreciated by the photographer. Notice some of my own comments on my pictures. Additionally, people often comment on pictures that are taken. That requires a response from a picture taker. Just the way it is.

Three, Casey is a financial supporter of ZHPMafia.com. As such, he gets a little more leeway when it comes to stuff like this. In fact, he's making these comments in a forum that's sponsored by CaseyWithers.com. Let's just say that I am always a little more lenient when it comes to people who are paying the bills around here. Of course, Casey isn't special in that regard. See other sponsors here who not only include advertisements but direct links to their respective Web sites.

Guys, let me run the forum. If I see something that gets out of hand, I'll handle it. If you think there is a problem, feel free to shoot me a PM. I always try to handle stuff in a fair manner.

If anyone has a problem with my response here, please feel free to shoot me a PM.

Otherwise, carry on.

You know how on a regular skateboard, you have the board, and underneath you have the trucks and the wheels? Yeah, Ian skipped that chapter in class and put them above it.

Mods: Custom fenders, camber, custom control arms.
Mods to come: wider wheels, more camber.

And yes, those are the mods on the skateboard.

I work in a lot of layers, its really just a matter of the shot and the lighting, I also use several preset actions that I have created as well as some that I have purchased. The final step is always unicorn tears and panda sperm....That's what makes it mine.

Me too Keith. I am trying to develop that critical eye. I love the pic above....but think it could have been that much better without the buildings and whatnot in the background. Would that be true Casey. Or no. The building could also be looked at as structures that kind of break up the background, adding some more interesting aspects to the shot.

IDK. Dazed and confused.

Just because. I need to know why.

Hornung418
09-22-2011, 07:09 AM
Buildings are part of the background. They're not present when you focus on the foreground, which is the car in this case. They have no effect on the overall composition. But moving them would leave a strange unnatural gap in the background.

danewilson77
09-22-2011, 07:38 AM
ok....For the record...I am not talking about PSing them out of there. I was talking about....waiting 5 seconds for the buildings to go by.....facilitating a clean background.

neil1138
09-22-2011, 07:44 AM
Hmm, I never see need to remove objects other than the subject in post. Yes some things can be distracting such as light poles/trash/ec but larger objects in my opinion add balance to the photo. Remove the building and the left side of the photo (for me), would be empty. The car adds weight to the right side of the photo, and the building adds a bit of weight to the left side. All adding up to a balanced photo.

But that's overanalyzing it. I like to keep things simple, haha

C Withers Media
09-22-2011, 08:23 AM
Plenty of reasons to keep the buildings there from a composition standpoint. Thanks for responding Neil.

I agree with Neil, it leaves balance on the horizontal plane. It also adds spatial depth and provides framing for the shot.

However Dane, I am going to be removing the tiny white F150 I missed the first time through, so in a way....good catch.

that evo looks like a spider... all those circles and lights on it remind me of eyes... too many eyes....

this belongs in Danes Creepy Crawly Get it the Hell Away From Me thread.

It's definitely unique, it was a SEMA build from 2 years ago.

Here is another shot taken 50 feet from the first one, inside that little building behind the ACE parking sign.

Notice the softness of the light, how creamy and reflective it makes the paint? Love it

Very harsh, hard lighting. It can look good but most of the time makes paint blown out and lose definition. Just feels unnatural.

For the record, I bought my remote after I saw that Neil had one. He listed it in the gear he owns. I ended up buying the same one. It's been great. And, for $13, it's been awesome.

We might want to start a thread on the advantages and disadvantages of remotes. Now I'm curious.

Thanks, guys.

I think the main advantage is taking self portraits or long exposure shots, but I don't have one so I dunno

When I shot regularly, I loved mine for tripod shots, reducing shake. Much easier to me, than setting a timer. More control over when I shoot. Plus, for $13, it's pretty cheap.

Good collection of recent shots.

Casey, what's up with the wheels on the 5er? I'm on the fence about them...

No idea on the wheels. I see shots in my head as I drive wherever I am headed. What you see in this shot is what I saw driving down the street before we did a u turn and went back to take the shot. It was just parked there like that. No car wash, no staged shenanigans. What I saw is what you get.

For all I care, it could have been a Yugo parked there, I just liked the light and the setting, bonus for it being an M5.

overcast/foggy is typically the softest of all light and considered by many to be the best possible type of natural light to shoot in. Hence the lack of shadows and reflections on Gabe's shot above.

Halston, I believe is referring to a lack of seperation from the subject and the background. It's not uncommon with white cars and usually can be prevented by underexposing 1 full stop to keep some definition in the low contrast areas of the white. This particular car has black wheels and black accents which creates quite a predicament when underexposing the white because you lose the detail in the black.

Looks like a perfect opportunity to mix light. Underexpose the natural light on the white and throw some fill light in to highlight the blacks. There is no simple or right answer here, and there are multiple ways to tackle it. Gabe took an approach that works for him and his client, and that is what matters.

its so funny how the principles of lighting generally go against your normal logical thinking. Bright sunny day you'd think "hey great day to snap some pix".

WRONG.
Go out on the overcast dimly lit one instead.

"Hey it's like 11:45am, we should shoot while the sun is directly overhead"

WRONG AGAIN.
Closer to dawn/dusk the better the light.

Not what I meant with my post. What I was trying to get at is usually the sky would have a different color so the white of the car wouldn't just blend into the sky. Not trying to say you guys are wrong (exactly the opposite, I agree) but in the proper situation like it normally is by the Cross you would have clear sky and can see all the way to Dana Point (60 miles?). Sun won't be harsh either because it would light the car from behind and left of the camera

C Withers Media

^Right....I have been there many times and understand your point.......However........as a photographer who shoots on location, you have to be prepared for anything. Conditions are seldom ideal and adjustments or adaptations often need to be made. So we can talk about how hypothetically it could have been a perfect shot, or we can offer up suggestions to help teach people how to make those corrections when they show up and conditions are not ideal.

Beyond that, the shot was taken at 2:34 PM and the sun would have been very high in the sky and casting very distinct reflections and shadows on the vehicle had the sky not been overcast.

The photographer ultimately got a shot that his client was completely satisfied with and more than likely feel as if they got their money's worth. That is all that really matters for this shot in particular, we just have to be careful on a forum that has a lot of beginning level photographers to not mislead them by saying the wrong things about how light works.

Agree, I guess I'm spoiled in that I can take that shot whenever I want (I can walk to that spot in 5 minutes). As a paid shot your point makes sense. Also, at 2:30 I don't think the lighting would have been bad with the way the car was parked. I think you would have seen a reflection in the rocker panel only since the doors were open, otherwise there would have been massive reflection

Gabe, can you post the "cloud break" shot I was talking about earlier cause I'm having issues finding it on my iPhone (I hate Flickr on the iPhone, great site otherwise)

JP, I'm a novice photographer but I do see something in that last picture. I suspect that some of it has to do with the time that picture was taken. The car is pink. I'm guessing it should be white. The sky in the background looks pink, too. Not sure if that was the artist's intention or not. Regardless, it's not appealing to me with that pink color being so prominent.

Marcus-SanDiego
10-29-2011, 12:25 PM
Looks like white balance is off. That would explain the cotton candy look. Simple fix. And so I scratch my previous comment about time of day. This is more likely a white balance issue.

Carry on.

I know you don't, just for everybody else. What i was saying with my original post was there were a few breaks in the clouds that day (still overcast) that would have allowed the outline of the car to be more visible as opposed to blending into the sky.

Sorry, iPhone but I'm on my way out for a while so its easy to do this

One of the very rare car photos that you'll see me do.

Thanks, Ryan. Cars don't do it for me, so I generally don't photograph them. My ratio of other stuff to cars is about 99.9 to 00.1. :biggrin

well this is what I was working on.

I'm going to call it incomplete cuz I didn't get to go in the direction I wanted to with it (which would have been ALL BMW and more color variation) but I think it will be a project I will work on further, maybe after I get done with school or just collectively little by little (which might be REALLY cool to space out).

Okay I see what you're trying to do.

What if you could arrange the colors in a gradient fashion where the colors move from warm to cool or from neutral earth tones to bright and playful colors.

Also...requesting more pics of the Yellowbird.

well I did it by hue from black to white, and more importantly there is origination in the shapes in lines rather than just the colors. They bright yellow throws it off a bit cuz I was originally shooting more neutral tones - I needed an extra photo in this series to turn in though.

Thanks, sir. My first real attempt to do a car shot. Casey and I ended up doing a photo shoot of the car. Stay tuned for some of Casey's good stuff.

The quintessential definition of not always having to shoot a car at headlight level, from 3/4 front view.

Very very Nice.

I didnt take it as complaining anyhow. Its hard to view in that crop regardless. Might be making its way to print.
