I'm usually right there on the camera in case something happens.

In a couple of months I'll hopefully be doing some very nice upgrades to the rig. I'll be able to do anything I want. Right now I got some limitations.

I went to get a feel for the camera i was looking at :foottap
I now want a camera that is more expensive than i originally wanted lmao

I proceeded to target and saw the D3100, D5100, and the T2i

D3100- good for price, but hate how they put buttons on the left side of the screen (inconvenient :( )

T2i - great feel awesome resolution and price

D5100 - good resolution, love the speed and options, flip out screen and all buttons on right side :)

Josh, definitely don't be jealous of my photo equipment. I have a Nikon D7000. Not expensive and not highly sought after by everyone. Just a solid body that you should check out.

Glad to went to check out the gear in person, though. Smart.

The same way that your chances of winning the lottery get a hell of lot higher once you buy a ticket, the same thing goes for buying a camera. The chances you'll know what you want and be happy with it get higher the more you go check them out. I think I went to the store about 5 or 6 times before I pulled the trigger. Same thing for the majority of my large purchases. I go to the store about 4 times at least to see the product. I think it took me about 3 months to buy my road bike.

I am one that goes a different way because I like to push the limits to the edge... have you considered a used camera that is maybe 1-2 generations old? I asked because I have guided some friends into doing this. Say you have a 1,000 dollar budget. Spending less on a body and getting 1-2 quality lenses will yield better results than a brand spanking new camera with a kit lens. Granted you may find yourself in a situation where you have to work a little bit harder for the shot you want. Just another option out there. I am still shooting a pair of 40Ds right now. *edit* Don't know why I said they had been replaced twice... neither has broken.



Also as a random side note. This photog subforum is nice. Chill and relaxed with quality discussions going on. I like it.

5D mkII is an expensive setup as well, though.

yeah but take into consideration what William just said...

I just mean you get a Rebel T2i kit and its a low level 18-55mm IS lens.
You get a 7D you get a 28-135 IS... a little better quality lens than the 18-55 IS.

All I mean is a "kit lens" isn't always poor quality as the kit lens changes the higher you go up in the body you choose.

I still say go body only and really choose the lens you pair with it to meet your specific needs. If it happens to be the kit lens that comes with that body it'll save you like 20-30%.

Dane I think the body choice is spot on... I just picked up a T2i as a backup to my 5dmkii, it's a great camera.

I'm weary of the lens choice though, I think that's going to be too tight/long for you.

Since the T2i is a cropped sensor, You probably want something with more wide angle zoom on it to start out.

I would suggest something like a 28-135mm if you are budget conscious, or maybe a 17-40mm F4 L if you don't think you'll need much zoom. If you have a little more $ to play with, consider a 17-55mm 2.8 or even a 24-105mm F4 L.

I don't personally like the 'all in one' style lenses. Everytime I use one I feel like you are losing something somewhere. They don't do the midrange well and don't do the tele photo well. If you need to choose one lens though and are traveling and want to be mobile they are a good option. For my needs though it just does not work.

the lower quality ones I have to agree with you but something like a 70-200 2.8 L is one of my favorite lenses in my bag.

The 70-200 is not marketed as an 'all-in-one' though and I don't think anyone would consider only having that lens to do everything. It's a mid range zoom. Some might call it a telephoto but I don't really consider it that myself. I love he 70-200 because it does what it is designed to do well. It doesn't offer more width on the short end and doesn't have another 50-100mm on the long end. Like the 70-300 L lens Canon released.

How would the 40D be 'completely outdated'? It's already outdated when you really think about it but it is still a robust camera. I have 2 of them and shooting professionally with them. I would like to see a novice spend their coin less on a body(the least important piece to the puzzle) and more on nicer glass and time shooting. A larger improvement and enjoyment would come from that IMO.

I don't think a 40D is a bad idea, plus you could conceivably buy one, shoot with it for 6 months and resell it for what you paid for it.

Canon's kit lens is not very good. I would not bundle it like that if I was you.

I also have shot with a 40d (was my primary till about a yr ago when I got a 5DmkII and then it became my backup). I actually just sold it for a T2i upgrade, only paid $35 to do it in the end. Sure you give up some pro features but adding full HD video is a big plus. Dane had mentioned he'd LIKE video so why not knock them both out for small price difference rather than go with a 2007 MY body? I think the 40D was a great body but why limit yourself to no video if you want it and can have it for a small price upgrade?

I missed where video was talked about. I don't deal with video so cannot comment or make an informed recommendation. Now that I have gone towards the Prosumer style camra I could not go back. I need the wheels/controls for what I am shooting so I don't follow the entry level type stuff.

I would add though that many people are 'sold' a camera because of video. In reality those people that I know that were sold on that feature are literally using it... well never. If it is something you are truly looking to experiment with and use I would definitely look into it but before you make a decision really consider if you are going to be using it.

and thats ok for your purposes right now, you don't use photoshop so you don't have raw editing but its nice to have the files to go back to if you wanted. Also shooting to the full potential of your sensor helps image quality. Don't forget when you crop it shrinks the quality too.

So.....I'm getting pissed....so I figured I would ask the family.

I went out an shot a few pics today. I come in....and usually it just pulls up LR and auto synchs, and I put it in the computer (usually my comp will go "BeeDoo" to indicate a new hardware device has been added as well). Nothing happened, no sound, no nothing....and I come to find out...the computer is no longer recognizing the card. So...I put back it in my camera. Nope...no luck.

So.....just for shits and giggles, I throw it in the Germans computer and it works.

I have no idea....

We played with the lil lock/unlock switch on the side of the card.

Just wondered what the reliability of these are. This card was $100.00.

should be good, guessing it's on your computers end to be honest. Reboot, try again and let us know if you incur the same issue. Possible that if LR was open already it might not have seen the card come in.

The Germans SD Card works in my computer. Has to be card. That sucks. That card lasted me what....about a month?

As long as you're ok giving up on the pics on the card, try formatting the card in the camera and see if that works.

I think the card is toast. Went out...took pics of AFE prfilter, and that was it. It won't work in my camera, or computer, but works on the Germans.

So...the German pops it into his computer.......totally recognized.....and was re-formatted.

I put it in my computer.....no recognition. D5100 doesn't see it either. Weird stuff I tell you.

The Germans card works both in my computer and the camera.

My take on being a wedding photographer: boring.

After a while, it seems to run together. It's just different last names. But it's generally the same thing over and over. I like variety, so you can forget me being a wedding photographer.

My brother did Wedding Photography for a few years. Nothing against wedding photographers, but he got bored too. It really was the same thing every time, just different names, colors, minor differences.

The days of my point and shoot are limited as I find myself looking for greater quality in the end results. So, with that in mind I've been doing some web research to gain some knowledge before I make the investment. In my search last night on Photography.com I was watching some videos on tip and tricks, I cam across one on this new technology called a "Full Light Camera". Although; I'm going to pass on it for now, I thought I'd trow it out here to get some options. This is the home page for "Lytro" https://www.lytro.com/camera and when you get there click on blurry point of the sample pictures and watch what happens. Is this a thing of the future or will it slowly fade away?

Neat technology. Not something I really need. I know how to focus. I like to step down my f stops (the Lytro is a constant f/2) and I like to have a shutter speed that is often above 1/250 (Lytro maxes out there). Additionally, I can use a macro lens (105mm to be exact) for the close-up shots and I can control DOF with my other lenses just fine.

This Lytro product is probably for someone who doesn't want to invest in a camera that is a step up from point and shoot.

I was thinking that the wide angle, no zoom and a low apurature would do the trick on improving the picture quality but if you think I could just use my standard at 18mm then that would be good enough right?

I think knowing how to use it, the settings on the camera, the post processing tools and lighting (either natural or from a flash) make more of an impact than a lens purchase.


Think of it in these terms - a lens is a tool just like an impact gun/air wrench, a hydraulic lift or a 250px mechanics socket set is for your car. Just because you have it all doesn't mean your car will run better. You need to know how to use it all to be able to perform the tasks needed to make the final product. Same thing with photography. Many people think the equipment is the key to getting better and while it helps, it's not a factor until you master the basics. I've seen people shoot published novel covers with a $26 plastic Holga camera and a flashlight.


Also 18mm is pretty wide angle as it is so you won't be making much difference there than standing 3-4ft further away in most cases would.

Apparently, pros are switching to Fuji "left and right." I can't blame them, Nikon and Canon have been quite stagnant. This one just came out and is getting absolutely excellent reviews:

I'm actually considering getting the x100s (previous model) for Nolan's semester abroad and then get the XT1 for dad if I get the job I'm hoping for in a few weeks! Nolan may take a photography class in Spanish while in Madrid.
