yes I know take the clips off, does anybody know how do you take the clips off?
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/IMG_1396.jpg

according to the diagram on realoem, they're supposed to be expanding rivets. mine look like little philips head rivets?

EDIT: I cracked the top off one of them so thats gonna be a bitch to get off... done playing until i know what to do.

(I have a plan for this but its not ready yet, will update)

Not sure they are designed to come off. I know they are designed to melt, then drop on your engine bay in event of fire to help smoother it.
looks like you have same problem, the rear tabs near windshield have let it droop down.
Let me know you end up replacing it. if it's cheap i might go for it. otherwise, not that major to just ignore.

yeah, that's what the plan is. The one's on the sides are loose also, its really only in cause of the clips. I found a guy that does custom high temp ones (won't warp/shrink like these), I just need to get it off so I can make a template for him. He's willing to do it for $80, normally $100. S/H is $15 but he can fit 3 per box so if we could get groups of 3 to buy them it would work out to $85 each. The OEM part (which will just fall apart again one day) is $80 on ECS before S/H (http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-330Ci-M54_3.0l/Search/Insulation/ES126350/).

He mostly works on muscle cars, this is what his work looks like:

well, maybe I just have to rip them out to get the liner off... if anybody is interested let me know

EDIT: figured it out. they are screw/expanding rivets. had to muscle it to get it moving then when i destroyed the plastic i used a needle nose to twist the screw out. rivet pops off after. replacement rivets (51481915964) are like $0.30 each, so what $1.20 total?

Scorpy... I asked him about doing that picture and this is what he said:

"Hi JP,

The decal can only be done in a single color as my cutter can't handle multi-color. Line drawings are basically it, anything intricate and it's both a pain to "weed" out the excess or the needle in the cutter will destroy it. If someone has access to multi-color decals made elsewhere they can put it on the liner as long as the decal can take the engine heat, plus the liner can be airbrushed as long as the paint used can take the heat and won't run. Melting/dripping paint on the top of the engine won't be a good thing.

If someone wants lettering or text it can be done as well, as long as they tell me what font they want. The best way to do that is to open up MS Word and play with the different fonts until they arrive at something they like."

I'm pretty much in for this. Maybe we can do an install meetup once everything gets done? Looks like there's some hood removal and heat-molding involved in the process...

Hermes
09-30-2011, 09:03 AM
Hood removal is required for install, it's attached by using the stock mount points for the expanding rivets (if you want to use them, you don't have to) but mainly by 3M #80 adhesive because it can handle the heat from the engine.

danewilson77
09-30-2011, 10:15 AM
Why do you have to remove hood?

Hermes
09-30-2011, 10:18 AM
So you can line it up and glue it down correctly. Look at the pictures in one of the first posts I put on this thread showing a progression. Besides, it would be a huge PITA to try an install without taking it off

JP. If the OE rivets are used, then why still use the adhesives? Since the insulation would already have holes in place for the rivets. Wouldn't the rivets be enough to hold up the insulation? How heavy are the insulation that require adhesives? Remove the old rivets. May lose some. But no problem on purchasing new rivets.

How heavy are the insulation that require adhesives? Remove the old rivets. May lose some. But no problem on purchasing new rivets.

The OE part is kind of hard, so 4 rivets holds it in w/help of the tabs around the edges. If you look at the pic where I took mine off you can see that there are actually something like 10 spots for rivets. The reason you can't just use the rivets is that this liner is flexible and won't stay in place, therefore needing the glue backing. You do use the rivets so that it at least is lined up right while you're putting it in, after the gluing its kinda redundant. The rivets can't be more than $0.50 each and they get destroyed as you remove the liner, requiring you to get new ones. When I make the template I will probably not mark all the holes for the rivets to keep the look clean, prob just a few. If you choose to use all the rivet holes you will just have to punch any additional points you want in the material.

das boots
09-30-2011, 04:56 PM
Can you have some insulation like yours have the clean look and some pre-punched holes for the rivets? I hope it can be done with this option. I agree that adhesives might have to be used. But by using all of the rivet holes, then the use of adhesives will be less. Which is what i'm trying to get at...minimum use of adhesives. And one big Roundel in the middle.....:roundel.

danewilson77
09-30-2011, 05:48 PM
So....is the adhesive included with the sale?

Hermes
09-30-2011, 06:17 PM
Nope, sorry. I'm gonna have to buy it separate but I'm pretty sure a can will cover a few cars so, just like s/h, we just split it. What, like $2-3 each...

The total price of this will make sense when you look at it in the long run.

Ok, why not break it down. Didn't check prices, just assuming things and you will soon see why I think group buys are the way to go:

Aircraft Grade Heat/Sound Insulation + Logo = $80
S/H = $15/box (I assume you're gonna order 3 so $5 each)
Adhesive - don't know but prob $10-15/can (enough for a lot of cars)
Expanding Rivets = $2-5 (depending on how many you're gonna use)

The way I'm looking at it is:

I. It's gonna look really clean
II. Insulation on this product will be WAY better in all technical/scientific aspects
III. About the same price as the OEM one that will just degrade over time like your current one
IV. It's gonna look really clean
V. Those of you that have enough engine work where things are rubbing, issue will be gone (or you're screwed and need to buy a M hood with more room)
VI. It's gonna look really clean
VII. You're not gonna have to replace it again in a few years cause it got messed up again.
VIII. did I say this yet, can't remember - IT'S GONNA LOOK REALLY CLEAN!!!

That's okay. I'll take 4 rivet holes than none at all. I'll take care of the edges with minimum use of adhesives. And also at the same time patterned by using the tab holes provided by the factory similar to the photo of the Pontiac using the tabs to hold the insulation. The tab holes are the ones hold up the insulation. I really do not want to deviate too far from the factory pattern. Okay with that?

You have to cut the oem one when you install the brace so that the hood will close properly. That's what led to me just removing it.

The hood closes properly with the hood liner in tact. It just rubs a little on the brace. I could care less about that. :P

Can't wait for the new headliner from you Hermes. I'm 100% in!

Interesting. How long has yours been on there? Would be interested to know if the rubbing has any effect on the finish over time.

Also wondering why BMW installation instructions would have you cut it away if it only rubs. Could have saved myself a lot of aggravation and mess.

I just outlined the template, I need to cut the plastic down (70" x 70") to appx size and make sure it lines up right but it's basically ready to be sent out for him to start production

be happy that you didn't need to tape some plastic sheet onto your hood

Sounds good everyone. I'll try to get a pic up once I get the first one.

Chris, liner is $80 and shipping is $15 but he can fit 3 per box so if we can get groups of 3 to buy them it comes out to $85 each. ECS sells the original one (p/n 51488193941) for $83.42 but that one will just dry out again.

Dane, he said he will do any simple design you want. He has a 14" roundel already or you can just have whatever you want that is simple (text, etc). He also said the liner can be airbrushed as long as the paint used can handle the engine heat

Marcus-SanDiego
04-22-2012, 01:07 PM
Hate to be a spoilsport but the roundel is a trademark that belongs to BMW. Use of it would be a trademark violation. Using BMW phrases is a violation as well. In the past I've clamped down on people using my site to violate trademarks. It's made worse because BMW's trademark attorney has contacted me previously. Therefore, feel free to sell them just don't involve the site.

Thanks, guys.

I think the issue is if we sell something with a logo that BMW owns. I would think that you decide to do on your own car should be fine as long as we are not promoting it. Theoretically you could put 100 roundels all over your car since you can do whatever you want on your own property... but that would look like crap

04-22-2012, 07:58 PM

That's correct. You can put the roundel on your personal stuff. Just don't sell it. Once you start selling something, with BMW's trademark on it, you've run afoul of the trademark laws. That's what I am talking about.

As for the ZHP Mafia trademark, you can use that as long as you get permission, or license its use, from the trademark holder. This assumes, of course, that you plan on selling your product. If the trademark holders says no, and you sell something with the mark on it, the trademark owner can come after you for treble damages.

Hmm. I forgot about the logo infringement. The liner itself still looks really nice, and of nice quality. JP if your guy is willing to make a handful of these, plain of course, I'm sure some of us would still want them. Sorry you got caught in the middle. Tom, that's just a violation by another name. Any court in this land would call that a violation. It's clear that you're paying the guy to perform a service, which in reality is a service to build a product -- a product that infringes on someone's trademark.

Anyhow, simply avoid selling this product through the forum. If you guys want to talk behind the scenes, that's your prerogative. Just don't want it in the public forum.

Thanks, guys.
