Intro To The Crazy Mind

So you have all seen my WTB Thread. Because of all the questions and for self cataloging I have decided to start a project thread to document my experience from complete start (finding the poor test subject) to complete end (hopefully ending in global domination by M3TA5IN Motorsports Race Team).

First lets talk about my brain! It works at maximum capacity 120% of the time. Side note: this is not to confused with me saying I am smart, that is not what I mean at all.
What I mean is that I have a severe case of ADD or I don't know what it is. I can not focus on one thing to save my life. I mean I literally could not have a conversation with you and not be having 1 to 3 other conversations with myself going on in my head at the same time. Some people think this is a bad thing, Katie (the fiance), I find it extremely useful. I can have a conversation and be planning my weekend at the same time, this allows me to cram in lots of things and get more done. It works too, Katie likes to think I am just never listening to her because it looks like I'm off in la la land while she is speaking to me. I have been tested on several occasions though and can repeat back to her verbatim what she was talking about. Funny thing is I was even tested once by her and the mother in law to my knowledge of what I pay attention to from over the past 7 almost 8 years (how long we have been together). Turns out, I pay attention and retain way more about her than she does me! BAM!!!! 1 point for the male race, love!

You have also all probably seen me post about everything from websites to track question to who knows what else. You guys are all probably thinking, man, this kid is crazy. I actually do have everything going on, I work extremely hard to fund all this craziness that goes on in my head and hopefully eventually just work for myself one day. Just this week Ive been in Chicago doing testing for the company that I work for everyday 9 to 10 hrs, met with family, interviewed several programmers, web developers, and designers from every corner of the world for a website I am working on, giving the attention my beautiful fiance that she deserves, figured out a budget and time line I would like for a track car, looked up plans for a garage, discussed legal actions with 3 lawyers against someone that owes me money, somehow managed to still kick ass at fantasy football and go 3-0, got a hold of contacts for 2 of the mafia family members to inquire about jobs (still working guys, I didn't forget), and now I need to take a breather and design some invitations for katie she asked me to do or she is going to crack the whip :wub you babe! She knows I'm crazy though, so its all good :)

Chapter 1 A Young Boys Dream

So as some of you know I have expressed extreme interest in getting into the track scene. Its something I have always loved and wanted to do since I was a little boy. I remember the first time I discovered motor sports (besides NASCAR, grew up in Kansas and didn't realize there was anything besides that and dirt track when i was a wee lil pup)
I remember my first experience with "Real" racing. (opinion of course, sorry nascar fans). I was about 7 years old and we had just got Satellite, I was flipping through the channels and there was Colin McRae flying through the woods at a buck 30. I was fascinated, I couldn't take my eyes off of it, sadly the WRC coverage ended, but I needed more. I wasn't sure how this fancy new city machine worked so I jammed the channel thingy and looked for more!!! There was no more WRC, BUT Then I flipped some more and discovered Formula 1! Again I was in awe of what I was seeing.

This was the point in my life where I decided I wanted to be a race car driver when I grew up! My father worked a lot and traveled a lot, so he wasn't home much. I expressed my interest to him the first time he got home. My dad always supported me and he was excited too. I lived in a very rural area, but I didn't live far from Heartland Speedway in Topeka Kansas. He told me they did what was called junior dragsters there and we could start building a car for that. I was beyond happy! He sent out for all the paper work and in a few weeks we got a packet in the mail explaining everything we needed to do.

Unfortunately shortly after all that, my parents went through a divorce and my dad gave my mom everything, so he had to start fresh. No more racing career, but I understood so no biggie.

Life went by and because I grew up in the awesome state of Kansas I was able to get my first car at the lovely age of 14 (farmers permit at 13, just need more than 100acres). I lived in the middle of NOWHERE, no literally, NOWHERE! every road except for the major US highways near by were gravel. I had me a fancy 89 Chrysler LaBaron, if you turned on the A/C the car died and it had no radio. Doesn't matter though, it was a perfect rally car. That's right!! I never stopped or forgot about good ole Mr. McRae and the WRC. I decided because of all the awesome gravel roads and the rare power that a 89 Chrysler LaBaron throws down that I was going to start my rally career. So when I had no choirs to do, I would hit the empty middle of nowhere Kansas gravel roads and race against time. I mastered the drift and eventually figured out how to do a complete 360 with no problem (that was by accident the first time). I also became very good at jumping table top bridges at about 90mph ( I never said this was a smart childhood). Anyway, blah blah blah. BTW, that car was sold for the same price I got it for and the guy still drives it to work everyday today lol, best POS ever!

Time went by, I had 4 wheelers that I could tell you stories about for hours, I got a 85 Chevy Silverado with a 454 and racing trans bored out for mud bog racing. Ok seriously, i love all things motorsports and if it has an engine and goes fast its like porn, but mud bog racing is the dumbest thing ever, so that was short lived. It also didn't help that at this point in my high school career I found out girls and alcohol was "cool", that truck had a short lived life after to many nights showing the girls how awesome my big truck could go through all the pastures (I don't approve of driving under the influence, i was a silly young redneck, i apologize).

Anyway long story short, i moved to the east coast, found out about ricers and street racing etc etc. lots more dumb stories a completely Jeep career that lasted several years and here we are today...

Chapter 2 The Third Wish
So here we are today! Ive finally got 2 of 3 three things I have ever wanted in my life. A BMW (I love all cars, but the BMW is by far my most favorite ever), and my gorgeous Fiance Katie. I can tell you the exact point I was standing when I was 13 years old and met Katie, that day I said she would be the girl I would marry (true story).

The 3rd thing that I still have not accomplished is started some sort of racing. Its all I have ever wanted to do my whole life. I would give anything to have my own race team and just travel the world racing. I envy people like Robbie Gordon, Travis Pastrana, Ken Block, Michael Schumacher, and the great Colin McRae R.I.P

Well know I have worked and worked and worked and finally Katie and I our doing pretty well together. We have our house, we have each other, and we have our awesome Siberian Huskies Guinness and Jameson. Katie will tell you I have been torn at this point. I have juggled, sell my car, take the money and buy a cheaper DD and take the rest a buy a track car. Over much thought we both decided that the car I took 8 months to find we both love to much and do not want to get rid of. So being the lovely fiance that she is, as agreed for us to take a certain amount and allow me to find a track car to start with!!!! :wub

This will be a project I start with to learn 1. BMWs in and out 2. the basics and starting of racing, driving technic and all else. 3. Just a purely awesome journey that will be the best no matter the outcome.

Some ask why the e36 body style? I feel that they are not as complex as the e46 and also with in budget. ALSO the e36 M3 is the car that made me fall in love with BMWs!!!! I have always wanted one. I remember being 15 16 years old, before youtube or anything like that existed. I would search all over Bear Share to find bmw videos and always see the DTM videos where they just drove around in the the e36. I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then the Mischief 3000 came out. Dido had the dakar yellow M3 in it and i wanted so bad!!!!!!!!!

So, I have started this thread to catalog my whole experience and now you know more about me than you probably care to know. This thread will stretch for as long as zhpmafia exists and you all get to go on the journey with me of me getting learning about BMWs and learning how to race.

Special Thanks
Goes to Bob (Audi0000) when Bob posted his ZHP for sale I became more serious, he inspired me to just do things. I thought selling a ZHP would be so hard, and which what I went through also with my e90. Bob did it though because he knew what he wanted and he went for it.

All of ZHP for being supportive of helping me find a e36, you guys are great.

Disclaimer

I am not a writer, I apologize in advance for all grammar errors before and after this.

I also apologize if I offend anyone, I don't mean to.

Oh also the e90 isn't going anywhere, its only going to get visual upgrades from here on out. It will be the DD/Sexy show beast.

Oh fancy!! Thanks for the heads up. The e90 will probably take a backseat for a few months while I search for the track car, but after that I will probably hit you up.

Anytime man, the casa is always open to mafia members. Even if you just wanna throw back a beer and stare at our cars. Thats actually my most favorite thing to do. I park my car right outside the garage, get a beer, sit down, and stare.

Continuing the search...

How do you guys feel about a 212k mile 95 325is? Its higher than I wanted to go but from what I can tell the car seems in wonderful condition. Radiator, cooling pump, and thermostat were replaced. Among many other things.

Its your call, but there are plenty of lower mileage cars, just keep looking. The 95 I picked up last week only has 140k, and runs great. Too far over 200k your getting closer to the end of that motor. If the price is right, and you dont mind rebuilding or replacing, go for it.

This will be a fun thread man. I am crazy too, my brain is going a couple hundred miles a minute always. I am addicted to cars, work on cars, play with cars, google cars.... Working at a dealership makes it worse too I think. Its too easy to aquire cars here. I guess thats why I have owned like 25+ cars so far. I get bored easy and then plan the next one.

Always wanting to race and learn to drive got me started in AutoX in like 95. I did that for a few years. I met a guy at an AutoX who is a driving instructor for BMWCCA and Audi Club that convinced me to do a track day and that was it- HOOKED. Its a blast, you will enjoy. Hope to hit a local track with you next year. It will at least get you on the track until you decide what kind of racing you want to do.

Check out Spec E36- http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/articles/spec-e36/ - Tirerack sells the suspension kit ect. May be your thing.

See you when your back in town.

Love the intro to this thread, I'm subscribed and I wish you the best of luck with your "project track car search." You and I are a lot alike with the A.D.D., nothing helps me, I just gotta be. Are you setting this car up to do SCCA stuff, NASA, or are you gonna build it for doing HPDE's and such? ...just curious what your direction is, I know a few people that own race teams doing SCCA/NASA racing, and If I can help in any way let me know :) I've been talking a little here and there with a good friend about doing something similar with an E36, speciffically a 318i... I'm verrrrry interested in your build Cody!

I am unsure what route I am going to take right now, but once I get a better idea or the direction I am going to go it is all going to be documented here. From the research I did on each series to why I went with what I did.

I have looked a lot into the SCCA and I like the programs they offer and the level you can get to. I have also looked into BMWCCA SpecE36 class. Although it is limited and the competition probably isnt as fierce as I would like, it might be a good starting platform for building the car and learning a lot.

For now though, this is just a learning car not only in racing, but also for BMWs. I was very competitive in the offroad scene and learned a lot about vehicles and taking them apart and fixing things. I have never truly dove into engines though and things of that nature. Mostly suspension set ups, gearing and axles.

I would love input or knowledge you have, as this is the very start of the adventure. I know Audi0000 has been involved in the track world for awhile and will be able to give me a lot of input (he could throw a rock at my house and knock me out we are so close). So I will probalby start with just some basic track days and getting use to the car, and the experience.

The first thing I am going to do though is get some books on e36s, put it in the garage this winter and just start ripping everything out for weight reduction and mainly to learn.

I started this thread because its extremely difficult to ever find anything about how people started, just projects of what they are doing to there current car. This thread will catalog my whole experience from now, to the build of the e36, and eventually the next car I move on to (really want a e46 M3).

So please everyone, all input, questions, experience, and just good pure BSing is welcome in here. I dont care about "cluttering" "my" thread, it is for everyone that is interested.

Thanks AZ! Like I said, anyone of you is welcome to my casa anytime you want, if possible I will even provide a bed.

So I have been researching the different orgnizations, classes, etc. I think I have narrowed it down to NASA still reading over the rules and classes for a long term goal. I will start with doing HPDEs though after some track days with Audi0000.

Will spend this winter tearing down the car and refreshing worn parts etc.

I also have a thead going on bimmerforums in the track section, they have a large e36 crowd so I wanted to talk to them. You guys can check it out if you want. I wanted to get input from a racing angle on OBDI over II. They are also giving all kinds of useful information for getting into it! I also gave a shout out to ZHPmafia there :D

It was a early Chicago morning. 5:37 to be exact, very sleepy, the eyes were heavy and the snooze was on its 5th hit. Crap! I gotta go to the airport! Oh, but I am so excited, my fancy spancy BMW is sitting there waiting for me to drive it :) Sitting at the airport now, making my final decision on the track car, its been a rough process. Ive probably looked at 183 cars from e30s to e46 M3s.

So I found a e46 M3 in NY on that one silly forum. It was a salvage title, the previous owner hit a deer in it and it messed up the passenger front in. The work was professional done on the car though and looked great. The current owner was asking $13k. So I started the research, talk to the shop that did the work, saw all the receipts for the work done and researched the process for getting a rebuilt title in PA. I thought, when will I ever have a chance to buy a e46 M3 for 13k with 75k miles again, and this would make the perfect track candidate! After discussing with the fiance and much thought. I decided this would be a little larger project and I would need to sell the 330i to fund this project. Pay for the car and then start ripping her down and building her up. I spoke to the owner and was very excited to go see the car...

Well like all things in my life, i am more indecisive than a woman (lol you all thought I was going to get a e46 M3). I struggled with the thought of selling my car. I looked for it forever and I love my car. So after the e46 M3, looking at fully built e30s, countless e36 325s and e36 M3s I came to my decision. I want to be different and live on the edge! I am going to build and track my e90!!!! I know I know, some of you are thinking that is just down right crazy, even stupid! Well I like to be different and do what people tell me I cant do. Ive done tons of research on what little performance upgrades there are for my car and thought outside the box, I even found about 2 build threads where others have built there e90 for track purpose. I know this is not the best decision I have made in my life, but my car is fully paid for so whatevs. I figure the worst case scenario is I or someone else is a horrible driver and I fly off the track and do 52 barrel rolls landing in a heap of mangled e90ish ball of beauty and sell the scraps to a yard for whatever I can get. At this point I will look back at the mistakes and poor decisions I have made in life and use this learning experience as research to better my children and tell them all the stupid stuff daddy did.

On the flip side, this is going to be sique nasty! Prepare for the ultimate track/learning experience you have ever witnessed ZHPmafia! Oh yes, prepare!

Currently in talks with some contacts of Udubs on getting a tune (more information to follow). Ill be getting stock dynos ran in the next couple weeks and getting my curb weight figured out.

Also talking to Gavin and MMW about his headers for the N52 he is working on.... stay tuned

That's a pretty big difference, from your original plan. I am sure your e90 will be tons o fun at the track. I would have loved to keep my Zhp for track duty, but I felt it was too nice and pretty. The Zhp would definitely have smoked my newly acquired e36, but I feel more comfortable knowing the e36 is easily replaceable. If things go wrong I buy another and transfer all the fancy stuff. Look forward to seeing your plans and following this thread. If you have time stop bye later and check out the e36, take it for a spin. Its a fun little car. TTYL. :rockon

Back from the dead!!!! Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Lots of things have happened in the last 6 months, but I'm finally diving in...

Audi0000 has been pushing me super hard (for good reason) and I have signed up for my first Auto x event with him to go out and get my feet wet (the real intent is to do track, but why not get some seat time and figure out the car better).

I am super stoked, finally doing my first racing after many years of waiting and super happy I have an awesome friend/neighbor that has made me stop thinking like a dumb ass, get my act together and just do this once and for all.

Anyway

First event!

and the final log of the day:

Basically this all started because my best neighbor in the whole world who happens to be on zhpmafia as well (and how we met) pushed me to get off my arsh and get out and start this shit for real. Thank god for awesome people, I had the best time ever today! Thanks Bobby! :biggrin :cheers

So basically Bobby asked me if I wanted to go to an AutoX a couple weeks ago and even though I really want to do Track I was like hell yea, I can start learning the car. So I was like what do I got to do?

So we signed up for the event with the Washington D.C. region SCCA. $35 to race and $10 for a weekend SCCA membership (SOOOOOOO WORTH IT!!! :headbang ) Best $45 I ever spent in my life, hands down.

We had to be there by 7:15 am so me and Bobby met up at the gas station right by our house to fuel up and get some RedBull :thumbup

At the Gas Station very early, you can see Katie in the car trying to go back to sleep...

Track Beast
http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l495/BimmerLoop/Bobgassing.jpg

Then we started our Journey to D.C. met up with another 95 M3 on 695 one of bobby's friends and a VW Jetta on 95 (works with bobby).

We cruised and the track beast looked sexy.

http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l495/BimmerLoop/bobrolling.jpg

http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l495/BimmerLoop/bobrollingfront.jpg

Then we arrived at FedEx stadium and saw the course! It was huge, I got really excited because any AutoX I have ever seen was fairly small, this covered a lot of area!

We registered, I slapped on my fancy cut out vinyls (bobby's idea) and then we did tech. I told everyone I was a noob and they helped me.

Then it was about time to start, so we went and got our work assignments, we were running in the 2nd heat, working 1st heat.

Sorry I didnt get as many pictures as I would like, but katie took a few to show you the course the best she could while I was working.

Here is like the 2nd 1/4 of the track coming back down, to the left is the start and first slalom (you cant see) then in the back it goes into a big long round turn and come back over the course down to where this vette is. You can see me in the background right next to the poll doing Cody things.

http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l495/BimmerLoop/first3rdcourse.jpg

Then it comes around another big ass turn (where I spun out in my 3rd run trying to push it :) ) This is Larry (another friend of Bobby) He is the co driver of the Mini and they are going to Nationals, his son is going to nationals in his 330i. Larry was super nice and gave us all pointers!!! and he rode with any of us if we wanted help. Although Larry said I looked really comfortable out there and said I didnt need the extra weight. :pimp

http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l495/BimmerLoop/2nd3rdcourse.jpg

Larry was 3 wheeling it all day, looking sweet.

So we eventually got finished working and then it was our time. I was getting super excited and super nervous because I was learning everything at once. I asked Bobby if he would ride with me the first run. So he did and gave me the run down on Auto X.

Bobby and me strapping in for my first experience in racing EVER!

About to pull off grid once I get the go.

Pulling up to start gate

Pulling off the start gate

and into the Slalom

http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l495/BimmerLoop/slalom.jpg

So my first run ever! How did it go? I felt fairly well. I went slower, learned the course. I did almost miss one part of the course but bobby was like rally co pilot and got me through the gate like a ninja. I did hit a cone though, ONLY cone all day though!! :pimp

first run comes to a 78.804 +1

Im pumped!! bloods rushing, I have no clue what this number means but I felt like I was on top of the world.

Then Bobby goes for his first run. For being rusty (10 years out of the game) Bobby was doing awesome. I rode with him on his 3rd run and it was sweet!

Also, he was in a pretty crazy class and dude came out 7th out of 13th with some crazy as cars (see results below).

http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l495/BimmerLoop/bobs1strun.jpg

going through the big turn...

http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l495/BimmerLoop/bobbigturn.jpg

We did some more running. My 2nd run got even better with a 71.438 almost 7.5 seconds off my first. I blame the passenger weight on the first one :p

Then I was really pushing the car by my 3rd run (or what I thought was pushing anyways lol) and I pushed a little to hard and spun out in a turn (no pics because katie was giving the evil eye to someone that was talking shit about my spin.)

that came to a 84 something run.. blah.

Then my 4th and final run my goal was to beat my best time and I did!!! :biggrin

69.107

There were only 5 people in my class and one of them was the 95 M3 that went with us. We technically were in the right class but we wanted to run in the morning so we just jumped in this class. I got 4th out of 5 lol. 5th was the guy that went with us.

Results of the day.

Awesome dude! You need to get those vaders raised up a bit. Gives you more shoulder support in the corners. This is totally in my future. Congrats on the not last place of your first event!

Completely awesome! A 60+ sec course is huge! The ///M looks at home out there on the course too. So glad it was fun for you, and yay for Katie getting up so early to go with you. Dedication son! Also great to see your improvement throughout your runs, it's so much fun getting faster and faster!

So about those seats....if you strip them, what kind of condition are they in? :biggrin

Yea the course was massive!!! It was awesome.

They are in very good condition for miles and year. I would say 8.5/10 the driver side does have your normal bolster wear. I'm taking pictures tonight Ryan... See the for sale section ;)

Had a blast man! I'm super stoked and bitten by the bug crazy. Can't wait to do more.

Just found out today the president at Katie's new company is good friend with the local scca president. Said he was going to get us in touch and see what we can do together. Don't really know how that will work out but we will see.

Firs track day should be in November at summit point. Can't wait for that, everyone says track is better than auto x. I had so much fun just doing auto x my brain cant understand it gets better.

Many updates to come in the build thread after bimmerfest too. :biggrin
