View Full Version : Clicking in engine bay

So, I figured some of you may know if this is a problem or not. When i raise my hood with the car running, it sounds like a lot of clicking going on in the engine bay. My car has been in the shop recently for some repairs (from hitting a landscaping block in the middle of the highway....) and the mechanic did not say anything about it. (and he is one to mention EVERYTHING that he thinks i need to do to the car) is this somewhat normal for our cars? you cant hear it with the hood closed, and turning on/off ac doesnt change the sound at all. The car runs great, and i dont feel anything power wise that leads me to believe i have a problem, but any advise or things to check out would be appreciated. ive got 134k miles on it, FYI.
thanks in advance.
David

I have a ticking noise also. It bothers me, but my mechanic didn't say anything about it either. It doesn't bother me as much as my VANOS does. The car is starting to sound like a diesel at idle :facepalm

I have my work cut out for me in the Spring!

Ticky, clicky...not normal.

we have timing chains not belts, right? Think it might just need a tune up?

danewilson77

we have timing belts....but they only very, very, very rarely need adjustment or go bad. You don't think you just need the anti-rattle kit?

i didnt think the rattle kit was for idle, i thought it was for 2500k rattle. guess im wrong?

I have a tick at idle as well and I've already done the Vanos with rattle kit.

Tick at idle could be failed DISA...

I tried disconnecting the DISA at idle and the ticking was still there. I think it's a lifter thing.

Yes. Lifters especially chatter in cold weather, too. After a while, as the car gets warmed up, it goes away. I had that with my E90.

I hate even saying this.....but there is this guy nmaed Tom...and he didn't change his oil for 60k miles....and wwe did his VANOS, and found fudge in his cam lobes, and pretty much everywhere. Anyway...we did his vanos....and a coiuple of treatments of AutoRx....but he developed this ticking sound. We got it to go away....by going to MI FS 10W-40. Just an FYI....

I'm honestly afraid of what I might find when I do the VANOS in the Spring.

Another one I did, by comparison...

Little bit of carbon build up there on the front of the VANOS. It seems pretty normal from what I have seen...as there may be a little bit of a low flow area up there. Dont know for sure though.

When I did mine, it was completely clean under there, but all the other pics I've seen seem to have that discoloration.

Anybody in NJ want to do my VANOS with me? lol

Sure. Reach out for me when you want to do it and we'll set it up. I haven't done the rattle kit before, but it shouldn't be a big deal. Gonna be doing mine this spring.

No heat in the garage, so just plan on getting a little cold if you want to do yours before spring.

How is it 7 hours for you? You live a helluva lot closer than I do, and it shows 8 hrs for me from Bridgeport, CT... :confused

That's what google said. I'm in the western part of nc, and he's in eastern VA. Hell, it takes 6 hours to get to the coast of NC from here!

That's true; I'd have to go through the "smaller" sections of the state (top to bottom as opposed to left to right).
Either way, this is a cool thing to do as a road trip.

Ha, I can be there in 3 1/2, maybe less. Land Shark???

I hate to say it, but at idle mine sounds a little like a diesel too.

Are we recommending Beisan system?
I can bring lots of beer with my fold-down seats! ROAD TRIP :rockon

That's very cool Dane. I'd like to keep that on a front burner. It's about 2 1/2 hrs. to Richmond for me. I'll have to get a kit that you can recommend. Cheers!

Get the o-rings from www.beisansystems.com for 60 bux.

You will also need vcg, avd vanos gasket. 2 crush washers for the banjo bolt, and 15 vcg bolt gaskets. Its also good to pick up a couple extra plastic rivets, and one extra vanos piston bolt. I have an extra one here in case we snap one. We can do an oil change while your here.

Read through the procedure a couple of times...
