Kinda just wondering. I was emailed about a $100 off towards new tires from one of the dealers by me. I asked about a set of Continental Extreme Contact DWS in size 205 55 16. I was told today that the tires ar $606.27 and another $199.95 plus tax to install them. I loled

Yea...that's a little pricey.

(Can I just add that you should be thankful your tires are so cheap, I just spent $980 on tires)...

As well, my dealers is going to charge me $100 to road force balance them..and I have $20 off as well!

Got to pay to play. Tire prices are crazy in my opinion. I was going to order Yoko Advan S4s in 325/40R17s which were going to cost me almost $800. For a set of 205/55r16s Yoko S-drives were $428.

I knew what I was getting into. Hankook RS3s 235/265 with 140 treadwear. Pure auto-x tires.

Better than shelling out $1500+ for R-Comps that can't even last a season.

This was the same dealer that wanted $300 plus tax for a four wheel alignment so I should have know better. Im not going there, just thought id see how far the coupon would go.

Peter Bellisimo just paid $2500.00 to replace one rim/one tire on his 5 series. Completely taken to the bank.

I never get tires at the dealer. Always through tirerack and have them installed by my mechanic. Since everyone in my family drives "sport" cars tires for my fmaily's cars and mine are normally ~$1k per set.

+1 to comments about the price of your tires (relatively). My 'sport tires' were >$1000 before install fees/taxes. I'm sure you can get a better price than the dealer but overall be thankful you run decent priced tires

Forgot about the alignment, mounting/balancing... add more $ to the bill haha. Good tires are expensive.
Thankfully, my dad buys my tires while I'm in school, then I'm on my own. So for now I get him to buy the "sporty" tires haha

It's funny though... tires are actually the cheaper of the two main consumables your car requires to drive... and they're cheaper by far. It's just that you pay for them upfront in a giant chunk, which sure makes them seem more expensive.

Let's say you spend $1000 for a set of sticky summer high performance tires. We're talking AAA here, so don't even think about no 60,000mi treadwear warranty. Let's say you get 20,000 miles out of these tires before they're bald and undriveable. With California 91 sitting at about $4.10/gal, and generously expecting 25mpg per tankful, you'll put $3,280 worth of gas in your car to drive those 20,000 miles. It's just that you're paying $65 per tankful so it's really easy not to keep a running tally in your head.

Good point. Following in your argument, brakes are even cheaper.

Shhhhh don't remind me...

That is true though. I added up my fuel costs from my last car (2002 Jetta TDI) compared to my zhp and the difference is unbelievable. 37mpg in town to 17-20ish is a BIG difference even with the difference between the higher cost of diesel when I was driving it and premium.

I don't even want to think of mine...

10,000 mile rated tires (for auto-x)...I'd say 2 years lifespan...
I burn (about) a Quarter of a Tank each auto-x...3.625 gallons
I go about 7-10 times each year...for this I'd put 10...taken that 93 now is about $3.50 on the high side

It's about $253.75 for 2 years worth of auto-xing on a $1,000 set of tires I just chewed through.

I get the point you're trying to make...but it doesn't always work out to that ;)

Okay, all bets are off when you're talking about a second set of dedicated track tires that you're using for sport purposes only.

But that piques my curiosity... how much worse is that circumstance? First off, you're driving at 10/10ths while autocrossing so both your tire life and your fuel economy can be expected to be at a minimum. Those tires might be rated to 10,000mi, but if you really burn through them after 20 autocross sessions, well... there's no way in hell. Let's say an average auto-x course is 1 mile long, just for kicks and for mathematical simplicity. How many passes will you make in a day? 10 if you're incredibly lucky? So that means after 20 sessions you've gone 200 miles on those tires. Ouch.

You've also spent $253.75 in gas during those 200 miles, averaging 2.76mpg at a cost of $1.27/mi. Your $1000 tires, on the other hand, cost you $5/mi. Oof. That's a hell of a swing. :jawdrop

From what I've been reading. You need to rotate the tires after a season to get even wear. I've heard of people getting 3 seasons...but that was pushing it and they were cording tires. Don't forget about heat-cycling...that will kill a tire's life after alot of heat cycles. They are 140 Treadwear, R-Comps are 60 Treadwear...just doing the simple math there you're looking THEORETICALLY the tires should last 2 (1/3) years longer.

When the car idles, my MPG gauge displays 5.9 MPG (the lowest the gauge goes)...The car idles always when I'm in grid...so expect say an1-1.5 hours of idling if we get through our runs quick. When I'm running, well I just dump gas out the door...lmao. My car isn't efficient to begin with, getting 17 MPG city isn't something I would like to say I enjoy

I don't care about the whole money. I'm there to have fun...which what happens :)

I just paid $750 for 4 Hankook Ventus V12s installed. But I also got $180 in rebates. So really the total cost was ~$570. Purchased through discount tire.

Will be doing the first highway and rain driving on the new Kumhos in about 3 hours. I'll throw up a review tonight.

So far, with just some spirited local driving I can say that the tire is very responsive, tracks very nicely (straight line tracking), has a ton of dry grip, and is WAY quieter than the Potenza RE040s that I had on her before.
