View Full Version : The Diptychs Thread

I've seen a bunch posted, figured why not make a thread for um... hell we have one for bokeh. :shift

Just for the newbz, have a look if you need some help figuring out what the hell a diptych is:

Q: What is a diptych?
A: A diptych is a photograph that uses two images side by side to form one single artistic statement. The two images can literally be in contact with each other, or separated by a border or frame. In most cases the images will be slightly different in composition but show a distinct relationship to each other in subject, shape, color, or many other types of similarities.

Read more and see examples here:
http://www.digital-photography-school.com/diptychs-triptychs-5-prime-examples

Since I don't have one of my own handy at the moment, I'll just throw one up that I'm fairly partial to for (ahem)... reference.

Lets see um (the diptychs that is...).

if only those weren't nike's...

I actually thought of something like this when I read the title, but I studied art history for a while (known as a polyptych)

Is there a template to put pictures together?

I have PS and I tried to create a new picture and copy/paste the multiple pics into the new/created one. I did the math to size the pictures right for the formation I have in my head, but once I put it all together it didn't work. So how is it usually accomplished?

Ryan, on PS I make a new layer then use the transform to resize. I think if you hold shift it locks the proportions

Yep, just went over my head. :(

You can also do it in LR, go to the PRINT section and you can do it from there, just click print and save it as a PDF instead.

CS5.5 users, would you use InDesign after PhotoShop to present the Diptych or just PhotoShop?

Hermes
10-19-2011, 10:28 AM
I do everything in PS but I also started learning on PS like 15 years ago (not claiming I'm good, just what I'm used to). Also, compared to what I learned on, newer copies of PS are ridiculous so I don't even use most of the other programs

UdubBadger
10-19-2011, 10:34 AM
no need for indesign just PS or LR (or you can do it in bridge also)

Ryan,

In PS, if you have a picture already opened within PS, make sure you are using the little square-doted -lines tool and right click --> select all. Then edit --> copy.
Now go File --> New. Note that the software proposes a name and a size for the new file. Since you copied one image into memory, it uses that size.
Say you want to put 3 pics next to one another horizontally, then multiple the width value by 3. Say OK and you should have a nice wide file.
Paste your copied image into it (that's one layer).
Go get other image, copy and paste into PS, that's another layer. You can switch between layer by showing layers. Window--> show layers. Go get more images....

Helps?

Kinda liked the framing on this one I came across this morning. I might play around with the concept myself and shoot a person's face on 1 and my LCI tail light on the other...

That one is pretty cool. Maybe if it was winter in one and summer in the other at the same spot...

UdubBadger
10-22-2011, 10:12 AM
well the seasonal one looks close, maybe both shot during the day would have been better but I agree same spot (even though it's similar) woulda been cool... would need an established marking in the background to tie it together like a building or water tower or something.

Color fo sho. The blues are realized in the color portrait.

C Withers Media

does it have to be a vertical layout. GO with the color.

IMO, would look better cut off just below the nose and showing both eyes stacked on top of the full horizontal shot of the car...I don't know the parameters of the project though. Very different.

yeah that woulda been 1 way to do it, actually that was what I was going to do originally, but I liked how when I put these together there were a lot of similarities physically with some of the lines and such. I dunno, it's too late now for the project so whatever. This isn't really something I would be putting out there otherwise.

Some fun using a few photos from this past June (using DipTic app on iPhone). My buddy Carlos got a ticket driving into Columbus for TimmayFest and for 48 hours was basically cursing out the entire state of Ohio and everything associated with it, one 48 hr long rant, it was hilarious. Anyway, you can't see his middle finger up out the window but he was pretty happy when we passed the state line back into Indiana.

Consider yourselves the best forum on the net.

I NEVER post photos of my wife - never (or myself for that matter). I don't think most people can handle it and I don't trust the people on them to behave appropriately to where I won't want to get off my couch and hunt them down.

That being said, I think you guys can handle it. I put these two photos from our wedding this past summer and loved what I saw.
