What are the best roads in your neck of the woods?

South jersey is generally flat and straight so you really have to get off the beaten path to find the twisties around here...

In CT? I couldn't tell you. Definitely NOTHING near Bridgeport. Pissed that I have to drive over an hour away from here just to get to a decent road.

I did a trip for work that had me fly into Columbus OH, drive to Charleston, WV and after done there I had to drive to Winchester, VA. When I left Charleston WV, it was around 9pm. Since it was dark, I was blindly following my GPS. The first leg took me on I-79, heading north. Right at Clarksburg, GPS had me get off I-79 and take Highway 50 all the way into Winchester VA. My only complaint was that I didn't have a better rental car.

Highway 50 between Clarksburg and Winchester is a riot. Its filled with 15 mph switchbacks and steep grades through the Appalachian Mountains. It can easily take 3 hours to cover, even late at night with almost zero traffic.


We have a few decent roads not far from my house that lie on the western edge of Wisconsin. They're commonly called the "alphabet roads" because they're all letter names. The roads all criss-cross eachother and getting lost is easy without a GPS. The traffic is minimal but it is farm country so blind corners and hills can be dangerous. I spent an entire day out there 2 years ago with a bunch of friends. Highly recommended roads to drive if you ever end up in the Minneapolis area and have an extra day.


Montana. Too many roads to list there. If you've driven in MT, you know why they call it "God's Country". Breathtaking views and TONS of twisting, winding roads. Bonus points for having very few State Troopers.

My other favorite was Driving from Stockton CA to Yosemite National Park. Gorgeous scenery and great roads.

Usta live in Montana, for about 10 years. I know exactly what you're talking about. Wish I had the zhp at the time....though when I lived there, they hadn't been produced yet.

Here's some links I used to use when I was riding bikes a lot. Used to ride sport touring bikes in the twisties a lot. Getting lost in the mountains was the goal. At that time was based in Annapolis so mostly PA,MD WV,VA riding. Don't have any of the roads written down anymore. But was mostly out west of DC..Doing a quick look at Google Maps I think 211 out by where it hits Skyline was a real good one in VA.

No, I went to the dark side for my motorcycle- it's a '95 Honda ST1100. Put 40,000 miles on her and she never let me down.

I loved the Ducs and the RTs as well. The Honda just never have me an excuse to sell her....

I understand, I totaled the Duc in the VA on a road leading towards Skyline. Sold the BMW RT when I sold all my bikes later as part of a move. Like you could never bring myself to replace R1100RT, had upgraded the normal stuff but just loved how flexible the bike was. Down here in SFL, no desire to ride, no good roads too many bad drivers..

I'm with you-- Before I had kids I would ride in Philly and Manhattan amongst all the traffic and not think twice. But as life went on, priorities changed, and at some point I just considered myself fortunate to get through many years and miles of riding without getting hurt or killed. Figured I'd step away before it was my turn to draw the winning ticket in the applehole lottery.

I used to get the itch every now and again, but for the past two years I've been scratching it with the Bimmer.

Where I'm from (Wilmington/Greenville, DE Chadds Ford, PA area) there are tons of good roads. Really there is no shortage of amazing roads to drive. Some of the supercar groups where you pay for a day driving them come to these roads, if that means anything.

Top most well know are Route 100 (creek road) and Route 82.

There are tons of roads all over if you know the area. We can thank the DuPont's for preserving and protecting a ridiculous amount of land around here.

There are a bunch of roads in southern PA/northern MD. Mostly back roads I take to/from work. Nothing as infamous as the the aforementioned roads in the South.

There are a bunch of roads in southern PA/northern MD. Mostly back roads I take to/from work. Nothing as infamous as the the aforementioned roads in the South.

Falls Rd which runs parallel to I-83 from PA to Baltimore, but like you said northern MD and PA have amazing roads everywhere. Basically once you get off a major route all the roads are good, Falls Rd is one of my favorites though.

Up here in my neck of the woods, route 1a from portland me. down to gloucester is a really nice drive with the missus.
And the kancamangus highway is always fun to blow off a little steam, such a beautiful drive through the mountains.

I'm hearing the Dragon is now constantly being patrolled, even in the wee hours of the morning. Don't know how true this might be, but if it's true, I wouldn't bother driving that far only to get my fun ruined.

I believe it. The first year I went (98) there were no cops and hardly any people. By the last year I went (03), tons of cars, bikes, and cops. The difference I think was the proliferation of the internet.

From what I was told by the locals, the cops tend to descend on the place when they know there are scheduled meets, and after any serious accidents or deaths.

I've been on 1A north of Portland when I was riding up to Bar Harbor, but never south of Portland.

I'll certainly take a detour next time I'm up there.

Mt Washington Auto Road baby!! Kangamangus highway, northern NH and Vermont. Usually make a couple trips out that way in the summer with a few other buddies. A bunch of euros all together. Last year consisted of my ZHP, a 540i-6, a "just a 2.0T " MkII GTI stripped with roughly 300hp :D, MkIV GLI, a Passat Synchro G60, MkIII GTI with a MkIV modded 1.8T....and more.... anyway

Streaked Mountain is like 5 minutes from our restaurant. Have had wayy too much fun on that road.

Rt 28 in Auburn NH, from Exit 1 to Exit 2 off 101. Sooo much fun!

Thats one good thing about New England is its all hills and mountains, so the roads are my favorite kind and a fun road can be reached in minutes :)

I don’t remember the route # but Cumberland Maryland and Wheeling West Virginia have some crazy roads. The Cumberland roads are a big zig zag up and down the mountains, I drove the e30 through there squealing the tires around all the turns at 45 to 50 mph, that's how twisty they are.

In the Montreal area, we have a great twisting roads in the Laurentian mountains and around the lakes area . Have also had some fun on the northern NY state roads around Saranac Lake & Lake Placid.

However, the past 2 summers I've been enjoying 2 weeks of European style driving. It's great not having the fear of a Smokey pointing you down. Driving in north america gives me paranoia.

If you're looking for twisties, nothing beats the Amalfi coastal drive anywhere in the world. A real challenge with every curve there might be another crazy European careening over towards you. This past year I took in the Ligurian coastal drive around Genova. It was also full of twisty roads, but not as challenging as Amalfi. Where else can you enjoy a drive at 110mph with no cops around except some other higher powered MB or Bimmer flashing his lights in your rearview. Too bad the rental wasn't a ZHP, but they were fun just the same.

Lots of TN/NC staties and county mounties. Was there September 2010. There was a line of Honda Civic Si Hatchbacks that were driving north while we were driving south. A few had a hard time keeping it in their lane around one of the turns and almost hit us head on. Luckily, I was driving slow and keeping the car to the right and by the non-existent shoulder. Shortly after they passed us we saw a TN highway patrol car zip after them... followed by an ambulance. I'm hoping they didn't hit any of the people or motorcyclists at the outlook.

Northern Delaware and lower PA has some great roads. Twisty, lots of hairpins, and TONS of hills. You can make your passenger scream if you want, and i did (my g/f). Gotta be careful though, lots of the hills you can jump your car.

Looked for pics online, but couldnt find any good ones. Just this pic, shows nothing special. The Brandywine Valley is GORGEOUS to drive through in spring though.

Ten Miles of fun. My dad and his buddies used to take their bikes out and see who could clock the better time (out and back) If you weren't back in 20 minutes they would send some one to look for you on the side of the road haha. My pops had a Bultaco...just to give a sense of the time period :biggrin

Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler from Vancouver is my back yard. The highway is a dream to drive. It snakes along the coastal line with the dark blue Pacific Ocean beyond a cliff on one side and a mountain on the other. Snaking its way inland through rocks, hills, lakes, and lush greenery. Corner after corner show what a BMW chassis was made for and why a Chevy Cavalier was not meant to be a sporty car on this sporty road. There are nice windy climbs that even a twizzler not dare replicate. Descents which'll test your brakes and stomach after a beautiful meal of filet mignon next to a bed of freshly steamed, lightly salted vegetables. Suspension and tires will heat up just enough to make your heart melt at the apex as you power out of every corner. Your fears will show how alive you are in that moment which will transform into an addiction that no corner on this highway can be taken normally. It's one of the best roads to drive on when the traffic is clear. A highway known for Vancouverite motorbike elitists to tear up whilst hearing the exotics reverberate their singing through the canyon walls. Even this description isn't enough to justify how beautiful this drive is.....

....then I drive to LA and hit HWY 1 from 101 at Legget, North California. The speed limit would not allow you to go past 50mph as every corner feels like 20mph would cause you to slide off the asphalt. Brake. Throttle. Brake. Throttle. Brake. Throttle. Imagine doing that for 30 minutes straight while the scenery is that of driving in the trees like you were a guest of the Ewoks on their Wookie home planet. Giant redwood trees let you know who's boss at every corner as they await to devour you if you made one wrong move. Another amazing drive that no track could give....

Ahhhh....I need to go out driving now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Follow me as I head for work. First video runs from my neighborhood to the main road. Second video is the main road that the street I work on is over a mile past the Pepsi bottling plant that I make a right turn at. This segment runs at 200%. The last segment picks up from there and completes the circle back that is one of my other options. It's like my personal road course. Now I know why there are so many race car drivers from Tennessee.
