View Full Version : Temperature gauge shows intermittent behaviour

Lately, on a cold start-up, my temperature gauge doesn't rise above the 1st hash-mark. However, once the car is warmed up, if I shut down the car and then start-up again later, the gauge rises to the middle area. The next morning the same thing happens.
I was intending to change my overflow tank this fall, since I had a tank failure on a previous 323 I owned, but now I don't know. The odometer shows 106000 km (approx 60k mi.)

Sounds like thermostat is going bad.

Unlike the first 2 responses, I'm going to vote that you need to change your thermosta.......wait, crap.

If the above doesn't fix it.....you may be low on blinker fluid.

Well, I was hoping there was another answer to the symptom. I guess I might as well do a coolant system upgrade by changing the pump, thermostat, overflow tank & hoses since I'm over the 100k km mark.

It all checks out OK

Either that or the flux capacitor needs more plutonium.

Mine went in for the Mr Fusion retrofit

Make sure you select the "retro" option. You only need 1.21 gigawatts.

With the Mr Fusion retrofit, you no longer need plutonium to generate the 1.21 gigawatts, you just use trash to fuel the vehicle.

Wow I have seen Back to the future wayyy too many times.

I'm in the same boat. t-stat stuck in the open position. Now that it is starting to get cold, I may want to expedite my efforts to replace. If you're car is not getting to full operating temp, your heater will also not work at full capacity.

My dilemma is that it starts off by not working, then if I stop somewhere, when I get back in the car & restart,,, the gauge is at the mid-position & the heat is at full blast. I've been trying to avoid the the inevitable repairs I guess.

Yep. Stuck open thermostat would do that.

Droid X. Tapatalk. Use it.

Duuh eeet, you'll have heater function this winter and your car will operate at the appropriate temperature.
When I had mine done, I changed the water pump, thermostat, and belts as well.

If the temp needle seemingly stays at "zero", and then all of a sudden it goes to 12 oclock, there it could be a failing connector or sensor. But like in my case, I still have a gradual increase in temp on the needle, it just rarely gets to 12 oclock, unless I am on the interstate for about 20 minutes.
