View Full Version : Major Snow Came (12/25/2010)....

Models aren't quite in agreement yet, but we've got potential for a HUGE system to park off the Delmarva on Sunday/Monday. We're talking one of those 12" plus coastal sh^t hammers like last winter.

The ZHP might be off the road for a while....

When we got hit with 17" of snow last week, I didn't even bother trying to take out the car. It takes so long for the streets and highways to get cleared off after a big hit like that so there's deep drifts everywhere.

kayger12
12-22-2010, 06:10 AM
At least you're road crews and drivers are probably used to it up there-- 17" of snow here is like the Apocalypse-- everything shuts down for like a week. It's kind of comical, actually...

It's been raining here in San Diego for five straight days. I imagine there is going to be some vicious weather moving east from here. Good luck.

Yep- big fizzle over the past few days. It's still gonna bomb out, it'll just be 1000 miles off shore when it does.

Maybe 3-6 on the coast if we're lucky. Prolly a miss though.

Hot off the press from one of my favorite meteorological blogs:

http://www.liveweatherblogs.com/liveweatherblogs/images/blogimage/snopwmap.gif

"The latest trends are alarming and will come close to giving a major snowfall in the major cities along the I-95 Corridor...

1) Models are shifting west. Huge shifts west in the CMC and NAM tonight.

2) GFS shows over 16" of snow in the PHL/NYC metro areas.

3) Second guess map above is a GUESS until I lock in my numbers tomorrow around noon with a more detailed outlook including mesoscale features."

Well fellas, I guess I'm missing something over here in the W.Va. eastern panhandle. I see snow showers only, and I guess the weather channel is reluctant to say anything about accums. However, we are getting a nice little snow shower right now. It's dusting everything and I DON'T LIKE IT! I wanna drive my beautiful Christmas present!
That pretty pink and blue map doesn't look good for Dane...

kayger12

Models all adjusted west overnight- means that the worst case scenario from 3 days ago is starting to pan out.

This thing looks like it may bomb out big-time over the coastal mid-atlantic.

This is from a guy at the weather blog I frequent who called almost every storm on the head last winter:

Decided to rename the G.F.S. Good For Snow because it has been taking the totals up each run and we'll see where this model decides to end with the Nor'easter. Right now on the GFS and the latest run we have the following...remember my range is including the Fluff Factor or snow ratio. Baltimore 1.25" liquid would be 12-16" snow DC Metro 1.10" or 11-15" snow Wilmington DE 1.34" or 13-18" of snow Dover DE 1.52" or 14-19" of snow Philadelphia 1.02" or 9-14" of snow Reading 1.21" or 12-16" of snow Allentown 1.15" or 11-15" of snow Trenton 1.11" 11-15" of snow Millville 1.24" or 12-16" of snow AC Metro 1.22" or 12-16" of snow NYC Metro 1.11" or 11-16" of snow BOS Metro 1.55" or 15-20" of snow

kayger12
12-25-2010, 05:44 AM
Just to clarify though before I send everyone into a blizzard panic, those numbers are based on the present run of just one of the models, they aren't a forecast. Lots can change in the next 24 hours. Still a 20% chance that it misses out to sea...

I'm off until next Monday, but anyone who's got to go in the morning is going to have a rough go of it. I just drove home about 2 miles from a family members house and it was brutal even with 4wd and good tires. They just don't have the equipment around here to keep up with this kind of snowfall.

I'll shoot some pics in the morning. This is def the most snow from one storm here in my lifetime...

I've got 200lbs of concrete on the back of my tractor, which has a snowplow attachment. Made short work of this ish.

My 318is is doing okay with 120lbs of concrete in the back and Continental DWS tires. Limited slip helps a bunch.

Man, weatherman have it easy. Only job where you can consistently be wrong and not get fired. Supposed to get 18+ inches of snow, ended up with a little under 6.
Side note, going to work this morning was a breeze! Started the girl up, turned on butt warmer, shoveled driveway and off I went!! Blizzaks are truly God's gift to winter tires. Paired with the AWD, the girl was a beast on the snow-laden streets!!!
Be safe out there guys (do we have gals here?) it sure is messy!!

The 17 inches of snow we got in the Minneapolis area was bad enough. 27-28 inches is a serious headache - especially when you add in the drifting snow. Last time we got over 2 feet of snow was in 1991. I remember a lot of stuff was shut down for almost a week as we dug out from it. We got drifts as high as 15 feet that completely covered roads from that storm.

This was definitely ugly. Up north they had over 200 cars stranded for 12 hours because people just assumed that the DOT could keep the major roads passable.

+1000 on that.

I don't get to the slopes often anymore, so now when I get back from a day on the slopes now and I feel like I was in a plane crash. I spend the next few days popping ibuprofen like a deck hand on Deadliest Catch.

Marcus-SanDiego

I play basketball from time to time (rather than everyday like I used to do). My recovery time is getting longer and longer these days.

Same goes for football. Used to play often. Now play infrequently. When I do, wow.

To those who are younger: enjoy your youth. Stay in shape. Take care of yourself.

I lift weights these days, but it's not enough. Weight lifting doesn't help with being limber. Stretching is important. Weight lifting is anaerobic. Have to make sure you don't ignore the aerobic activities, too.

The key to youth is simply staying active and taking care of yourself.

Many of us work behind a desk now -- and for a lot of hours. Makes it tough to get out for a run or for a pick-up game of hoops.

Regardless, I am resolving to get on the court more in 2011.

I like your resolve, Mark.

I was getting a little thick around the midsection earlier this year and decided I was not going to be, "that guy." So got back to running last spring and shed the 22 extra pounds of slop I'd been carrying around. Feel a lot better and hopefully I add a few more years to enjoy life and get my money back out of the pension...

It's like the apocalypse here. Half of the town has been without power since Sunday night. The roads are absolutely horrible, the only people getting around are those with Jeeps or F-150's.

Everyone is stranded in their houses since the plows can't get around either. My last 3 days have consisted of eating and playing GT5 nonstop.

Only good thing about the snow was my good friend and I were able to take out his 5.7 Hemi Grand Cherokee and blaze trails. Off-roading with the Jeep in 3ft snow drifts was the honestly the most fun I've ever had.

Alex, that sounds fun. I'm about to take some pictures of my car and it's dirtiness. Will post pics later.

Advanced Edit, FTW!

Hmmm. Changed it in post #1, but not in the Hyperlinked thread title.

Keith,
Did you do that? It's freaking awesome.
I'm surprised the battery of whatever was being used lasted that long, unless it was plugged in.
