Just a reminder for all you winter driving folks...

Yes, the summer brings a nice hot look to our cars for those with a dedicated summer wheel/tire setup, but you also have the responsibility to be safe and help keep others safe around you by changing your summer rubber to winter rubber when the time comes. The rule of thumb is when the majority of your driving occurs around and under the 45 degree mark, it's time to put on rubber that will grip the road hard when that sudden deceleration or evasive lane change is needed. At least you will have a better degree of avoiding a rather time consuming and complicated situation.

I took my winters off 2 days or so after I put them on, I didn't want to waste them. I'll probably put them back on sometime after thanksgiving since it seems like it's been a little unseasonable warm here recently.

It sucks but the reality is that I've only put 200 miles on the car in the last 3-4 months.

One thing if you care about performance and you only get dry snow that hardly melts and gets heavy, then performance winters will do. It's when the snow gets sloppy and slushy is when performance winters start to show what they don't like. So for anything else get regular/more aggressive winters! :)

good post. i think most people forget that. in hampton roads i could run "summer" tires year round and be fine. it seems a hundred miles west to richmond we receive an a good amount more snow and i installed all-seasons on the rear. It made a huge difference and handling the foot+ of snow we received last year made a huge difference in getting around town.

Snow? What is snow? Actually last winter we had several mornings of frost and temps under 45F, even occasionally under 40F. A few times in the high desert of So. Cal I drove to the track in 25F temps on summer tires, but on dry roads. We did just put new all-season tires on the minivan.

Today someone invited me to visit SLC next week for a mini conference. I'd like to go but unlikely the trip will be approved at the last minute. And it would be a rental car, just airport --> hotel --> office --> hotel --> office --> airport.

Also a great time to check the life expectancy of your tires. I knew that my tread was wearing down and had every intention of buying new tires next spring. When I put the summer back on in April I thought they'd last another summer for sure. I got very, very lucky.

It is really scary to think what might have been with the way I drive this car in the twisties and on/off ramps. Dodged a bullet there I think.

Yes.

The worn shoulder isn't a big surprise as all BMW's will do that unless you take some of the camber out. What I found so alarming was the extent of the damage on the inside when there weren't any belts showing on the outside.

I guess my zhp has already had some negative camber removed. It's tires wear perfect and handles pretty good too. I don't track the car though. I'm pretty sure I only have 1 degree of negative on the rears and about half a degree on the fronts.
